Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

Religion. It's one of the most beautiful and yet horrifying things mankind has created. It brings people together and yet makes them mortal enemies. Those who have lost hope can find it in religion, those who have no energy to carry on with their lives might find it in religion and those who think they don't have a purpose in life are given one by religion. And yet it is one of the most frightening things you could imagine. How many million people have died because of a slight change in belief? How many have died because they were classified as 'evil'? How many billions of people had their lives negatively affected by religion? And I'm not just talking about a specific re…

In my ignorance about Islam, at a glance with the Quran, saw 19.34 and nearby verses. http://quran.com/19/34 and I should say I was surprised. Just to share with anyone curious. Two apart religions ? Are they ?

Gospel of john: "1 in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God . 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 through him all things were made (he is the holy spirit, and everything was made by the spirit); without him nothing was made that has been made . 4 in him was life( you can kill a person's body, but you can not kill his spirit, in him was spirit, in him was life) , and that life was the light of men. 5 the light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. 6 there came a man who was sent from God; his name was Mohammed. 7 he came as a witness (he was not the messiah, he came as a witness for the messiah ) to tes…

I wonder if a new religion will emerge in this century in keeping with new realities. I am not an authority on religion and I am neither for nor against any religion. I just wonder if like esperanto which arose from the need to bridge the linguistic gap some form of religion will evolve that will appeal to the common man without the need to elicit contempt or angst. Please advise. Thanks for your ideas in advance.

I have noticed something. Many Christians in fact believe in science, biology, and evolution. Yet still believe that there is god, hell and heaven. We also have those who claim to be creationists and they usually go around saying that evolution is a lie, science is a lie, that the mountains and the animals appeared out of thin air. Some people believe God created the big bang but not that evolution and everything else is false. So is there a difference between being religious and being a creationist? Does being Christian or religious make you automatically a creationist? Even in most arguments people assume that if you have a religion you do not believe in science but tha…

"Churches" Depravity The reason why I used the word 'Churches" is that abuse is not confined to one Church denomination but happens in many , thus it is a generalizing phrase The 2600-page report by Ireland's Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse found Rape was endemic in more than 250 Irish-"Churches" care institutions from the 1930s to the 1990s, and the "Churches" protected paedophiles from prosecution. Victims groups say the culture of abuse and cruelty in "Churches"" institutions in Australia last century could have been as shocking as that revealed in a nine-year Irish commission's report. This adds to the sorry saga of the "Churches" in America where…

Doesnt everyone have a personal god? whether that be defined in terms of an omnipotent, benevolent being to being oneself? Even ones beliefs could be defined as god, the structure of ones perception. cognito ergo sum? As such, if no one has any objections, why is science so objective of a combined belief?? I dont mean in abrahamic religion persay, i just mean in a combined belief in some form of creation. To conceive of something from nothing is beyond belief.

Like many on this forum my hackles rise when science is called a religion, similarly when posters compare my lack of faith in any god as a religion; so this title was deliberately provocative. Really it is just an excuse for a thought-provoking story from the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25715736 It is possibly the first time in the UK that a lack of religion has been grounds for protection under a law a/o convention which gives refugee status to those in fear of persecution on religious grounds

God has been proven to exist based upon the most reserved view of the known laws of physics. For much more on that, see my below article, which details physicist and mathematician Prof. Frank J. Tipler's Omega Point cosmology and the Feynman-DeWitt-Weinberg quantum gravity/Standard Model Theory of Everything (TOE) correctly describing and unifying all the forces in physics. The Omega Point cosmology demonstrates that the known laws of physics (viz., the Second Law of Thermodynamics, General Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics) require that the universe end in the Omega Point: the final cosmological singularity and state of infinite informational capacity having all the uniq…

Numbers Chapter 31? I have great difficulty in rationalizing this chapter with a concept of a good loving God as depicted by the lord Jesus Christ. ! The bible states that God is the same, yesterday, tomorrow and forever. This does not seem to be the case if one analyses and compares the awful chapter 31 of the book on Numbers, in relation to the loving, forgiving God, 1) Verse: 2 the Lord God said to Moses take vengeance on the Midianites. In direct contrast, Jesus said, forgive those who hate you and despitefully use you. It is easy to love those that love you, but I say love those that hate you. Vengeance is mine said the lord I will recompense. However, here G…

I ponder this all the time when people argue using the bible. They sometimes say conflicting things from it and they claim is the exact words from god but... I tell them that the bible is "interpreted" by humans and due to the fact for catholics the vatican does revise the book once in awhile. So how do we know that the "word of god" is not a book of human being's opinion on ethics that are out of date

A lot of the stories in the bible are meant to teach us lessons. However Adam and eve is suppose to be the beginning of time according to Christians. However what if you look at it a different way and apply it to your own life. Adam and eve were given everything and were innocent. They were taken care of god till that one faithful day. After that they had to work for everything themselves but god still existed. This sounds familiar doesn't it? We are children given everything we need or are suppose to till we hit 18 or whatever year is adult hood in your country. At which point are tossed into the world ready or not are must do everything for ourselves. Adults drink, …

Scientists like religionists want to upgrade their low self esteem so they pretend they know more of the real world than normal real people. They form forums to push their agenda among themselves so they can sing to the choir that must obey their directions and respond accordingly. They must theorise and hypothesize everything so that nothing is known or be able to be proven So rather than silencing the voices of foolishness within, they censor anyone that doesn;t respond according to the prescribed format of all scientists taught and trained by the worldly system. They promote the 'lack of design and laws' even though as scientists they are suppose to be looking for …

Most deplorable religionists use words to keep their flocks imprisoned within their framework of words and laws. They are semantics and linguists, that usually twist the hell out of sacred scriptures to supposedly verify their own power. They have never experienced what they are taslking about or theorizing about. They are word gamers..... they watch but never do. They only have theories but no experience. This is why Jesus and others have told them off in no uncertain terms. Matthew 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. That's why he continually called them hy…

Hawking believes that we are such insignificant complex molecular structures, on a minor planet, orbiting a very asverage star, in the outer subhurbs of one of a hundred, thousand, million galaxies, that it is difficult to believe in a God that would notice us, let alone care about us!. Singer and Intellectual Art Garfunkel said "It seems to me that God is something man-made for the purpose of maintaining a connection to the concept of a power which transcends the likes of man. A measure if you will. Yet when I think back to when I was 8 years old and what I thought was up above me I weep long hard tears of rememberance. I am measuring!"

People are skeptical as to whether Heaven exists; although, there is no evidence to support Heaven. A lot of humans believe in morality, and they try to be good in accordance with life so that they will be granted salvation in the afterlife. People get dreams, some, including myself, have dreams almost every night. Dreams are natural phenomenon that I think represent Heaven. In a dream you are superhuman; with the helping hand of numerous chemical reactions your mind creates a personal universe or world, and this universe or world is often filled with things that you want. The other night, I dreamt I was with someone that I really want to be with--this is something that…

Atheism is a title, therefore it is in believing in a title such as 'Nothing' or 'Atheism', believing in an idea. It has to be against something as a belief for it to exist, otherwise it's just a compensating make believe. I sometimes believe there is a God because we do die. The disappearance 10, 50 or a billion years after we die is met immediately after we die. I can not imagine how infinitely hellish eternal life would be!!! "Eternity is a long time, espicially towards the end." Woody Allen ( b.1935 ). Eternal life would inevitably mean eternal pain!!! Death stops our suffering, although as human animals it seems wrong to die!!! Mike…

I am extremely bad at logic but active atheists have told me that only philosophy can say anything about the existence of a god and what one can know about such a god. So Ontology what exists and Epistemology what we can know. 1. My fuzzy logic then tells me that there is no way to know if God exists or not? 2. There is logically know way to get any evidence for an existing god or evidence for a non existing god either. the way they have defined god makes God beyond such evidence? 3. So if there exist a god then neither believers nor atheists can know that it exists at all. I wild guess that some theologians have tried to solve this by saying that t…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25268343 I found this article interesting and thought that others might. It features religious practices which include physical punishment so as to subjugate children completely to the will of parents. The purpose of the thread is of course for discussion so please comment if you wish to. It may be impossible for members outside the UK to access the website but I have been reliably informed that to include the text is not acceptable - so you will just have to guess what is in the article. Good luck! I have feelings about this, being human, but I will not mention them because to do so would be SOAPBOXING.

With the name of God the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful The Quran swears by destruction of stars and the subsequent formation of black holes to prove it is sent by God. (In 53:1 An oath by the destruction of stars is taken, In 56:75-76 An oath by the enormity of this event is taken, In 81:15-18 Formation of black holes which form after the destruction of giant stars and the fact that matter and light cannot escape is mentioned) - Below are the specific ayaat: 53:1: By the star when it Hawa (destructs, blows up) 53:2: Has neither Dalla (gone astray), Your Companion (Muhammad Blessings and Peace of God be upon him) nor Ghawa (nor is being misle…
