Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

The number one way that the existence of God is undermined is because of the problem of evil. Which makes sense- how could an all powerful and all good God allow sin and suffering? I understand how this causes doubt. But the answer to why God allows evil is simple - free will. God gives us free will to improve the quality of his people. Think about it if we all could do no wrong how would we improve. We undergo trials and temptation it helps us be stronger and overall better. This is a support of God

I was on facebook and I read a post regarding the morality of premarital sex and how from some Christians' viewpoints it is regarded as immoral and their ironic use of shame to try to enforce their beliefs, it lead me to write this rather long reply in regards to how I think secular morality is superior to dogmatic religious morality. Feel free to criticise it. Some Christians think premarital sex is a sin. They base this off words written for the moral code of a society who lived over 2000 years ago. This was before people knew how reproduction worked and in a society where young females who got pregnant were dependent on the support of their husbands. During this ti…

This really isn't a fair category to start a thread about the plausibility in nature of a Creator God so I selected it somewhat randomly: 1) Does science permit that a Creator God is indeed: 1. conceivable (possible)? 2. plausible (reasonable or believable)? 2) If science does permit that a Creator God is indeed reasonable, how must science reason (determine God's substance) concerning a Creator God? a. disregard due to uncertainty. b. consider available evidence including: science (granted) nature (allow/reject) historical/archeological evidence (allow/reject) contemporary facts (allow/reject) contemporary information (allow/reject) human testimony (oral and wri…

A theory of everything that is based on the idea of infinite realms of reality all of which are part of an infinite number of larger realms. It believes that there are infinite levels of existence, each of which are infinite, and contain infinite levels themselves, and so on. Please tell me what you think of this theory- I am still working on it if you have any questions ask. Basically I think that everything little thing is infinite and that you can go infinitely up and infinitely down in levels of existence. For example: our universe is part a multiverse which is part of megaverse and so on. You can also go down infinitely ... Galaxy clusters, galaxies, solar system…

I know that most of you here do not believe that God exists but for a second let's assume He does. There is a question that I have been pondering lately. It is said that God is timeless and exists outside of time. Therefore everything is at once for Him. He doesn't act, think, or speak because there is no moment after the other. Think about it without time there is no then and later so technically He created time at the same time He created me but that doesn't work to say because He didn't create them at the same time because there is no time. See how this is tough? This does show how God is never changing though because everything exists at once so there is no change eve…

http://religion.wikia.com/wiki/Gospel_harmony_based_on_John/Overview The four gospels appear to have been constructed from 11 or 12 smaller books. At the end of each of these smaller books the gospel jumps back in time to the beginning of the next small book. What's especially interesting is that each of these smaller books ends exactly 2 months after the previous book ended.

Religious people, by virtue of their numbers and influence, are crucial to achieving the broad community acceptance of Anthropogenic Global Warming necessary to address it's causes and it's mitigation effectively. There appears to be a broad a range of views on the issue amongst religious people, from accepting the mainstream science through to vigorous condemnation of it as a kind of green religion and something inspired by Satan. I'm doubtful that the latter will be open to reason but there must be a lot who currently disbelieve the science that can be reached, perhaps by other means. How? I had wondered if restating things in terms of religious symbolism might cau…

In this section of the forum, atheists break every rule written governing this section. They do this to put forth their faith based beliefs. As they say, they do not beleive in a God(s) which religions are built around, and feel its their science given right to set the delusional and uninformed straight. They feel it is their duty to speak the word of science, so as to bring the lost back to the light. They quote from their hand book of atheist beliefs, Miller-Urey experiment, Darwin, and the Big Band. They have faith that these prove there is no God, and must express it in every thread over and over again. Now this would be ok, because it is the same thing religious …

Some passages: <<ROOTS OF ATHEISM ...Albert Einstein, who had a life-long fascination with metaphysics, believed atheism came from a mistaken belief that harmful superstition and a general belief in religious or mystical experience were the same thing...... Similarly, Charles Darwin, in a meeting with a campaigner for atheism in September 1881, distanced himself from the views of his guest, finding them too “aggressive”... >> Full Article

No offense, but I have always been against religion. I know most of the bible and some of it is just plain horrible. I'm going to give you a few of these quotes; Psalms 137:9, 1 Kings 20:35-36, Genesis 19:5-8, Deuteronomy 22:28-29, and Numbers 15:32-36. I got more than that and if you don't believe me read them for yourself. I was always told as a kid that "the universe can't come from nothing" and this proves God exists. It wasn't until I watched a science video until I learned the truth. The basic idea is that the universe started at a heated and condensed state. Energy (not nothing) had transferred into particles of matter. These particles later combined because of…

I'm reluctant to use my SFN account to post religious threads, but this counterapologetics argument is actually clever and fun. I'm not a philosophy student, so feel free to refine the way in which it is stated. Honestly I think it's a lot simpler than this format makes it out to be. 1) Satan had free will, for he rebelled. 2) Satan exists eternally, for he tortures us eternally. 3) If 2 but not 1, Satan was made to torture us by outside influences (i.e. God). 4) If 1&2 and Satan has free will eternally (E), he must inevitably be saved. 5) If 1&2 but Satan remains evil eternally, then Satan at some point irrevocably loses free will (not E). 6) If Satan …

YouTube video link disabled by Moderator per rule 2.7 I came across this video today. While I think the arguments are definitely irrefutable (it's hard to argue with math), do you think science can disprove God?

Dogs and Pigs are Considered Unclean.. QUESTION.. In The Quran, God Tells Noah to Save Two Of Every Kind Of Animal.. If God saw Dogs and Pigs as Unclean, Then Why Didnt God Drown Them in The Great Floods? Quran 11:40 Hud (Thus it was) till, when Our commandment came to pass and the oven gushed forth water, We said: Load therein two of every kind, a pair (the male and female), and thy household, save him against whom the word hath gone forth already, and those who believe. And but a few were they who believed with him. RESEARCH IT... The Quran would not have a foundation without the Old Testament.. The Story of Noah, States That God Asked To Save…

I had to post this because this topic just bugs me to no end. As an atheist with no scientific training, It sometimes seems as though I understand how evidence, science, and skepticism works better than some of the most distinguished scientists do. I guess Francis Collins would be the first one that would come to most people's minds. But there are others like Mayim Bialik (from the Big Bang Theory and other TV shows), whom I would consider more of an actor than a scientist, but she nonetheless has a Phd in neuroscience from UCLA. Despite this she is still a staunch Zionist and Orthodox Jew whom, if I'm not mistaking, was not born a Jew, but converted to Judaism later in l…

I understand that the explanation of how someone can see a ghost/demons/spirit,etc is because they had inhaled toxic gas which often, without realising that they had in fact, inhaled the gas. The inhalation of the toxic gas causes hallucination which people often mistook as ghost/demons/spirits,etc sighting. Now the question which bothers my mind is, Why does people whose supposedly "Possesed by supernatural beings" shows abnormal physical condition, such as: Superhuman strength, weird behaviour and speech that differs from how they usually act or speak, Able to stay healthy despite not sleeping or eating or drinking for days, etc Is there any scient…

Before I write my thoughts down I would just like to specify that this is merely food for thought. It's just an interesting rendition of thoughts I have about the idea of God. As a god, a creater of all with no physical representation or otherwise with emence enough power to birth an entire universe in relative days you would make your story known would you not. Although the bible seems no different then any other rendition of a creation story turned truth I feel there is truth in it. As is every creation story there is atleast one truth, the universe is created. Now God is seen as a being but I don't think that's what he is. I believe God just is. He is life he surro…

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum so I don't even know if this is the right thread for the subject matter, but I'm sure someone will let me know if it is or not. So, before I ask my question, I'd like to make a brief introduction and build up to my question, I'm not an academic scientist, meaning I'm somewhat of a laymen. I consider myself an theistic leaning-agnostic and my plausible belief system ties into the overall nature of the question I will ask. So as to not have everyone confused with terminologies used, I will clearly define terms, and put forth my own thoughts about what is written by saying either "DEFINITIONS" or "NOTABLE POINTS" my m…

I haven't started a thread in a while, so here's one: My religion is that there is no religion, there is no god of any kind. I want to start this new religion on the basis that all religion is wrong. I will call this new religion "Atheism". And now I wait for the influx of negative votes, I'm sure the joke will go above most peoples heads, as per usual. Let's see how long this thread lasts before the mods lock it, delete it, or all gang up to click the negative button hahaha.

I am a scientist. Most of my life I have been a Christian and have professed a close and personal relationship with god. I have argued for creationism in the past and have evangelised people, often to the point of annoyance. I have even experienced healing 'miracles' and answers to prayer and have 'felt' god's presence and holy spirit. I am a scientist. I can no longer call myself a scientist unless I make this statement: I can no longer call myself a Christian! I can no longer call myself a Christian, not because of the way I act or see the world or through any lack of love compassion. I can no longer call my self a Christian because I am open minded enough to …

In researching the topic of Einstein's view on religion I came across a post by a forum member which stated:http://www.scienceforums.net/topic/67876-truth-and-knowledge/page-2#entry693499 You can't write a paragraph like that without considerable study and what does he say "proofs of a universal mind and akashic record are ignored". Did he feel there was proof of the Akashic records? What are they?
