While I was lying on my bed thinking in various things about engineering I thought this situation: Imagine there's a water tank (not full [almost in the half of the tank]). If we heat the water inside the tank, the water will turn into steam and perform a pressure at the tank walls and it can explode due the high pressure (there's no escape to the water). But what happens with the steam when the tank walls are lined with hydrophobic material, the tank will even explode due the pressure?

Hello! I have noticed (while singing in the bathroom) that some musical tones sound louder than others. Example: (if we play a musical tone-note C (261,63 Hz) and then with the same intensity A (440Hz), the sound that comes out does not have the same intensity.) I was searching for an answer, but unfortunately I didn't find it yet and that is why I am asking you if anyone knows what is the reason for it and whether it is related to aliquot tones and resonance? I have problem understanding Newton-metre unit (or should it be written in all-lowercase style: newton-metre? Or newton-meter perhaps?). I don't have the problem with the unit itself, but with the way the unit is written: N m (or even with a small central dot in between: N*m). According to Wikipedia, the newton-metre unit has a space between 'N' and 'm'. But this would indicate the 'dot product', wouldn't it? It seems to me that it would be better to write the Newton-meter unit all compact: Nm. This way 'Nm' is clearly a unique symbol, and not a compound unit. I should have titled this: What kind of information should I know before going into physics education, and are the things listed below among them? I have a notepad dedicated to physics, as reading things isn't really enough to embed things in my knowledge, everything I want to learn, I write down rather than just read. Hello everyone, I have been reading about photometric optics and photometric units recently. I keep seeing several documents saying that the luminance of the sun is 1.6×109 cd/m2 at noon, eg Wikipedia. I tried to use the definition of luminance and some facts about the sun to see if I could calculate what the luminance should appear to be to someone on Earth, just to see if I got the same number as in Wikipedia. Well not only did I not get the same number, but my answer was off by a factor of 1030 too big! I have a project to make a quadcopter fly autonomous. I use a 9 degrees of freedom pcb, wich has a gyro, acceleration meter and compass in it. We are now flying with only the gyro. A gyro however has a few imperfections like drift (and a imperfection I dont know how to call). So a you cannot fly on a gyro alone, so when I search for some answers to that problem I find solutions like the complementary and kalman filters. They combine the data from the gyro and acceleration meter. But how can I use a acceleration meter on a flying object? If you make a string that's attached at both ends vibrate, it will emit an almost imperceptible sound. The role of the soundbox is to amplify that sound. My question is : where does the energy required for the amplification come from ? You surely don't add any vibrational energy by attaching a piece of wood. Is it just that the soundbox dissipates the string's energy faster, so that we hear a louder, albeit shorter note ? Thanks for your input, McCrunchy

It is easy to think of photons as being independent particles for two reasons, imo: 1) they are fundamental packets/quanta of energy 2) their sources and destinations can be measured as very distant. But does it really make sense to say that photons exist independently of their sources and destinations? I.e. when a photon leaves one electron en route for another, does it really have a life/existence except as a conduit of energy-transfer between its source and destination? Consider the following thought experiment. Suppose we have two charges in an otherwise empty universe, stationed a distance d from each other. Suppose also that we have buttons we can press that will destroy one or simultaneously both charges. We can easily calculate the potential energy associated with this setup, but what happens to it if we press the 'nuke both' button? Further if the charges are in relative motion and we nuke only one, what happens in the relativistic time before light can reach the second one to 'tell it' there is no longer any potnetial energy?

Hi guys! I would appreciate your help for this short question. So I am building an escape room (more info in wiki - real life escape rooms) and I basically want to use polarizing lenses to hide a message. I would have a photo frame with a message in it and 2 layers of polarizing lenses on top of each other. in front of the message. I have been given to understand that by twisting the upper polarizing lense you can make the glass impossible to see though or vice verca if you twist the upper lense the other way. Hi. Creating this thread to not distort one related to a baseball and an arm... A crossbow of a given fixed force. An arrow reaches say 100 metres. A lighter arrow of same dimensions/aerodynamics will reach farther ? A heavier arrow of same dimensions/aerodynamics will reach farther ? (not about lethality/penetration on impact) For sure, an untralight arrow made of paper will not reach farther. For sure, a heavy arrow made of lead will not reach farther. Man taking this Physics class.. I'm just loving every intricacy. There is a beauty I seen in it like no other comparable , when I'm learning Kinematics for the first time and I realize how I can describe motion mathematically, or the fashion in which the concepts of physics interpret the universe for the way she is as abstract as she is in an patternistic, simple, and proportional manner. I love how we take impossibly complex problems and solve them by breaking them down into simple kinematics. I'm definitely in the right science. The discipline of physics is so magnificently beautiful.

Hello: I am trying to determine the wet tensile strength for tissue fibers in units of pounds per ton. All I know is that a wet-strength resin is added to the tissue fibers and is present in an amount of at least 0.1 dry weight percent. Is there enough information to do this conversion? Say a baseball weighs 150 grams. A pitcher can throw it about 80 metres away. If it was made 50 g lighter, would the pitcher reach farther ? If it was made 50 g heavier, would the pitcher reach farther ? For sure if the baseball was a 2 g paper ball, the pitcher would reach perhaps only 8 metres away. For sure if the baseball was a 5 Kg solid lead ball, the pitcher would reach perhaps only 8 metres away. How could a baseball weight be 'tuned' to reach farther, getting the most kinetic energy from a pitcher arm ? ... Or is it already weight-tuned as designed ?
