Good cinnamaldehyde: Great smell. I put some cinnamon bark in water and boiled it to fill the house with wonderful vapors of this aromatic aldehyde the other day. My mother, for once, did not object. vanillin: People look at me strange when I sniff vanilla extract. dilute ozone: Our hot tub has a corona discharge ozonator. I get a whiff of the gas every time I open the lid. dilute chloroform: Working with this is pleasant. However, it becomes nasty as your nose approaches the container in which it is in. ethanol: I always sniff my glass of wine before I drink it. Lovely smell. toluene: This is pleasant to work with, eg when marking somethi…

I read the following comment on a Telegraph article about Hydrogen power, and the conversation swayed on to Global Warming, and wanted to know if what was written was factually true: The most abundant greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere in decreasing order are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, Chlorofluorocarbons, Hydrofluorocarbons and Perfluorocarbons. Some points that may be of interest: • Without any greenhouse gases, the average temperature of Earth's surface would be about −18 °C, rather than the current average of 15 °C. • The atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide has increased by almost 50%, from 280 ppm in 17…

Good day. Never done it; never seen it done. Read a lot about safety and many other details and would like you green light on the video ---> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D070-PHjDLM&ab_channel=HowtoMoonshine in case something is missing ! Have that countertop 'air distiller' shown, with differences: Added a digital temperature control; and the lid internals is plastic instead of another models being stainless. In my ignorance, a sugar mash is the safest for beginners on this machine. Am ready to start preparing the mash one of these days, after your blessings.

I`ve been given nearly a gallon (5 litres) of Toluene today, I`ve also contributed Much to this site in the past, so I figure I`m about due to ask a few "lame" questions myself does anyone know of any interesting things I can do with this stuff? and no, before any K3wl says it, I did the TNT thing over 20 years ago and have no interest in that anymore, I was satisfied. I`de like to try making the benzoic acid with acidulated KMnO4, ok I already Have this acid, but I`ve never made it this way before. also Sulphonic acid synths to make detergents, I`de like to try that too. and any Other ideas or synths for a relative Orgo Newb seems a pity to use all o…

ok, here`s an observation I wasn`t sure to put in Chem or Bio, and it really only applies to Smokers or someone that knows a smoker that`s game for an experiment take an ordinady copper penny (wash it) then put it in your mouth for 15- >20 mins, swish it round whatever DONT SWALLOW IT! (you`ll have lots of explaining to do at Airport security LOL) take it out then smoke a cigarette, each drag you take will taste sweet just like sugar! and it lasts for ages after you`ve removed the penny (over an hour each smoke will taste sweet!). has anyone got an explaination of the mechanism behind this? warning!!!! you DO risk swallowing the coin! and too much c…

i have got these bond energies: Butanol 5580 (total) Water 928 Carbon Dioxide 1210 oxygen 498.3 When i work out the total bond energies on both sides, it shows me that the complete combustion of Butanol is ENDOTHERMIC!!!! Whats wrong with my calculation C4H9OH + 6O2 ----------> 4CO2 + 5H2O 14149.8 11080 See?

shirts with armpit smell that does not want to leave even after several wash. I experience a weird thing . some of my shirts even after they are washed quickly smell bad even after 1 hour as soon as there is heat i guess. I read a lot about it and figured out this text below that seems to identify the cause . So yes good hygiene, yes keep hair shorts ok but what to do with those shirts. I read on reddit a lot of produc suggested but it is hard to pick the right one since they contain different product i m not familiar with. i want a non toxic product that is not putting my skin in geopardy and that does not contain nanotechnologies…

I am 100% sure this topic would deal with Chemistry. Anyway, 1. Can Caffine kill you if you drink to much. 2. How much would you have to drink. 3. What is it in it that would kill and what does it kill. I tried searching the Internet but couldn't find much on the subject. I will keep trying. Maybe it is just the terms I am using.

Recently I bought a rather expensive white leather shoes for daily wearing. After 3 weeks of wearing it, the white is turning to brownish and there are black marks on it. So do you guys have any suggestion of what chemical solution to use to remove all the dirts, marks, etc off my shoes? Perhaps limestone liquid? I want it to look like I just got it.

I'm in need for some methanol, I've read that this is in white spirits here in the UK but then I've read that it isn't. I know that there is 5% in mentholated spirits, I'm thinking of distilling this out using a water bath and all the rest of piping etc. Just wondering if there's a better source anywhere? I'm in the UK.

Where can an individual obtain some petroleum ether, assuming that most chemical suppliers won't sell to individuals and that distilling gasoline is most definitely out? I imagine that some similar solvents would work equally well, so please let me know if you think there are some alternatives.

My kitchen sink accumulated lots of fat and dirty water cannot be discharged. I tried to put some drain cleaner but it failed to remove the oil. It corrodes my kitchen sink instead of "eating" the oil. Eventually, I asked my parents' friend for help and the problem is solved. I learn lipase from pancreatic juice can digest the lipid into fatty acids and glycerol which is soluble in water. Moreover, bile salts in bile emulsify lipid into small oil droplets and aids the removal of it./ Nevertheless, it is quite difficult for some normal civils to utilize them in this way. Anyone knows some reagent which aids me to get rid of these oil?

I'm trying to write out the reaction mechanism for the formation of acid rain from atmospheric nitrogen. I know the general equations to go through but when it comes to showing the movement of electrons with 'curly arrows' I get stuck! so far this is what i have: 1. O + N≡N → N=O + N 2. N + O=O → O + N=O 3. 2N=O + O=O → 2O=N=O 4. N=O + O=O=O → O=O + O=N=O 5. O=N=O + O-H → H=O=N=O ¦¦ O I know that electrons from the triple bond of the nitrogen in step 1 move to one N atom and this means that the O is attracted to the other N and they form NO. I can also complete number 2 (i thin…

Hello, I'm a writer. A character in my story commits suicide in a high school science lab. I based this character on a real life event from about 15 years ago. I remembered that the boy covered his mouth with formaldehyde, but as everyone here probably knows, that's unlikely to have happened. For the metaphor that I've set up to work, the child needs to do it in the lab, and I'm having a dickens of a time figuring out how to do it. Will anyone help me? Wanda

Hey everyone, First off, thanks for taking a look even if it's just curiosity. I have a chemical or substance that I am trying to have identified, and I can't really seem to get much help or where to turn. I am not really good with chemistry so I was hoping for some good help on this forum. I will list pretty much everything valuable I know about the chemical, you can always msg for more details as I would be glad to discuss about it. Let's just say someone does help me solve this! It would mean a lot and I would be very happy to give some sort of reward on my own! $! At first I thought this chemical was methionine crystals, however, I was told that I am…

Hi, I'm a writer, not a science-type person. I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I'm working on a piece of fiction that takes place in a futuristic time when fossil fuels are not available (either by depletion, lack of access or perhaps cultural taboo; I've not determined). My question is this: What other fuels, not based on petroleum, would be available to this society?

This will probably sound extremely ridiculous, but I'm wondering what elements (what types of atoms) people are composed of. I know that we consist of protein (amino acids) but when you break things down past the cellular level to the atomic level, what are we?

What chemical or chemicals, on contact with blood, instantly explodes? This explosion doesn't have to kill them, it just has to go boom. I'm writing a science fiction story about an alchemist/knight during the Middle Ages who put something on his sword so when he goes into battle, people who he slices explode.

Let me say that I have no wish to go boom. I have (and recommend) a healthy respect for explosive gasses. Reading the Darwin Awards is fine, I have no intention of qualifying for one. I asked this question on another forum and got nowhere because "someone stupid might do something bad" if it was discussed. There are 60,000 biogas cookstoves used in Nepal everyday and I don't see why the technology can't be used intelligently here. That said, I'm interested in small-medium scale biogas production for electricity production (~1-3 KW) for a remote greenhouse. The issue is that the gas is produced continuously so I can either find a generator that will use it at nea…

it seems totally sci fi but i was just wondering, is it phisically possible to mix animals through dna? i was thinking of if u could, transform the dna and then mix that with something like stem cells could you play god and create your own new creature? im guessing no but id like a scientific view to it all, and maybe if it was possible to even somehow mix say, a bat and a lizard to create a dragon-like creature (and i only mean physical looks like it would be the size of a baseball and would not breath fire, and maybe not even possess the ability to fly...)

Hi all, I'm in the process of developing a web based application with the goal of it functioning as a tool for organic chemistry students as well as a synthesis pathway search engine. I would greatly appreciate any feedback. www.organicchemmaster.com Of note it has recently been capable of detecting a pathway from benzene to aspirin (2-acetoxybenzoic acid): https://www.organicchemmaster.com/Molgen/Reaction/benzene/2-acetoxybenzoic%20acid?options=Calc Thanks
