Dear Scientists, I have a small assignment to do. Recently there is an article data demonstrated that increase of skin and blood ILC2 counts in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) patients Title of article "Type 2 innate lymphoid cell counts are increased in patients with systemic sclerosis and correlate with the extent of fibrosis" My task is how you would proceed to analyse of which origin the blood ILC2s are. How would you rule out if they are mobilised from the site of inflammation to the blood circulation or if they are rather mobilised from bone marrow and actively recruited to the site of inflammation? By which means would you examine recruitment of IL…

  6. Is there an add-on in ImageJ or something that can mark, label, and count GFP-marked cells without it mistaking unintentional GFP stains for cells so that I can know the number of cells in a specific picture (given enough contrast between the cells and the background)? Additionally I want to measure the distance between these cells and some structures, but there are too many cells to measure distance for. Is it possible for ImageJ to do this as well so that I can just use math (like the normal distribution) to make statistics?

  13. I will point out one of Daniel Dennett's quotes: "We're all zombies. Nobody is conscious." I think we do have consciousness and consciousness is real. I think all the physical processes in the brain take on two different forms. One form would be when you are looking at the brain through a scan. You will see neurons, synapses, etc. But for the individual with that brain, all those physical processes will take on the form of consciousness for this person. Therefore, the brain and consciousness would be the same thing. Since the brain exists, then consciousness exists. Consciousness would simply be a different form the brain takes on. I think you can ha…

Does doing this prevent the bacteria from the toilet bowl from flying off all over after one flushes the toilet? i.e. does toilet seat block any bacteria from flying off had the seat not acted as a barrier for any bacteria to be thrown on your face as you flush? Do you normally close the toilet seat before you flush? What is the science showing in regards to this issue?

  18. I have heard that smaller animals which have a high metabolism tend to die earlier on average than bigger animals with a slower metabolism. Does this indicate that if you want to live a long life as a human, it is better to have a slow metabolism by reducing your daily caloric intake? I have heard that exercising regularly and body-building can increase your metabolism as you will need more protein, fuel and nutrients and minerals to replenish your body. However, would the benefits of a high metabolism out weigh cons? What is the general consensus among the scientific community?

  22. Hi!! I'm trying to optimize a single-base extension assay for 7 positions using both forward and reverse minisequencing primers for each position. Out of these 14 primers, 4 give a high extra peak together with the expected one. I checked the possibility of carrying the primers from the PCR reaction for target amplification but that wasn't the case. I also increased the annealing temperature of the SNaPShot cycling program up to 10 degrees Celsius (from 50 to 60 degrees) to make the annealing more specific but the extra peak is still there with no signs of reduction. Finally, I ordered the same minisequencing primers from a different company in case there was a problem du…

  23. I don't know if this is the right place for this or not but I walked outside and saw a spiderweb that looked to just be floating in mid air. It was a small web with a small spider in it. I took out my flashlight because its 3 AM and really dark and took a look at it to see how it was floating there. First I noticed it had two strands running all the way to the ground. They were really hard to follow because for some reason they only glinted when I shown the light at an upward angle. Why is that? Anyway I then noticed it had a bunch of triangle web strands attaching it to a branch about 5 feet away. Not too weird but then I followed the last strand. And It looks like h…

Hello everyone, I was recently talking with someone and when they weren't fully focused I asked what was wrong, and they replied they were thinking about what they were going to do after school. Now this surprised me, because frankly I don't understand how it's so hard to talk and think about what you're going to be doing later at the same time. This happens fairly often, and while I didn't realize it before it occurred to me that some people can have more thought processes going through their mind at a time. So I thought about this for a while, and while asking my brother questions, I found he could only think of one major subject at a time. If you asked him to do mat…

  25. In another forum I frequent, a member posted the following image as an argument regarding the difference between synthetic and naturally sourced vitamin C. It's obviously rubbish, but I'm really struggling to tell what the pictures are actually of. I posted in this section as it looks very vaguely biology-ish...I really am at a loss.
