So I'm a CompSci student at on on-line university. According to my advisor I still need to do some core classes in order to complete my degree. What I wanted to know is when will it be a good time to apply for internships? Btw: I still need to do calc 2 and discrete math.

Good day all. A male and female pair of nearby trees that need each other to produce fruit by pollination have both two main branches. If one branch is removed on each tree and swap-grafted with the other sex branch; will it work as if there were two self-serving separate trees ? Seen 'salad' trees multi-grafted to produce varieties of -say peaches- but never read anything like what am asking...๐Ÿคจ

In a youtube vid, a guy shows us how difficult it is to lift a big heavy non-spinning gyroscope, but after it's spun up he can easily pick it up with one hand and whirl it around his head! Where has its weight gone?

How a scientist can select right analytical reference standards in a QC labs?

  5. Started by Genady,

A former colleague of mine is very enthusiastic about prospects of large scale space exploration based on self-replicating von Neumann probes. I've never heard of them before. From a brief reading of several Internet articles, it seems to me not realistic. Not the self-replicating aspect of it, but what it will be replicating, i.e. the fully automated explorers. Do you know of strong arguments I could use to curb his enthusiasm?

A very popular phrase in this website is in the words of Dr Swanson. Another member's longer description of a model is also quoted here The purpose of this thread is to arrive at a robust definition/description of a scientific model by discussion. Perhaps a summary could then be pinned for future reference as the same issues come up time and time again. To kick off I note that using just model by itself can be unhelpfully vague and there are many descriptors/qualifiers available. Models can be ( in no partuicular order) qualitative; quantitative; illustrative; comparative; graphical; analogue; digital; expressed by a process; e…

Once on the air of the radio station "Echo of Moscow" in a program about science, which is led by mathematician Andrey Konyaev, I heard a list of requirements for new theories. 1. There should be no internal contradictions in the new theory. 2. The new theory should not contradict the data from experiments and observations. 3. A new theory should not contradict existing recognized scientific theories. I have a question, why is item 3 on this list? It seems superfluous to me. After all, if a new theory contradicts an existing theory where the existing theory is confirmed by experiment or observations, then paragraph 2 is sufficient. And if a new theory contradicts …

  9. Hello everybody, I didn't know where else to ask this type of question so I decided to ask it here.I kindly ask mods to put this in the appropriate sub-forum if needed. OK,here is the thing,I always wanted to be involved in any kind of scientific researches and try to give my humble contribution to it. Since I was a kid,I planned to became paleontologist, but in my adolescence I developed sever agoraphobia combined with emetophobia that prevented me in achieving that. I never lost my interest toward paleontology and science and I continue to learn about it online since that was my only option. Since I have agoraphobia,it means I have basically unlimited …

What do you think about Orch Or theory proposed and very sustained by Stuart Hammerof (top american researcher) and Sir Rorger Penrose (emeritus professor of Oxford ,member of royal family ,physics and math expert). Both are quantum physics experts. https://www.express.co.uk/news/science/728897/LIFE-AFTER-DEATH-consciousness-continue-SOUL This link explains it in the simplest way.

As I was refitting the soft plastic debris catch plate to my hole punch, I reflected how often we use and rely on the elastic properties of so called plastic materials. If they genuinely operated as a plastic material there would be instant failure of the component. Comments ?

Hello. This is about mostly unattended plants. Some plants in my yard are grown in containers. The drain perforation is standard at the bottom. Never seen other. Well, usually flawed. Plants get thirsty or die if rain is not periodic enough. Some planters with the drain hole covered or no drain hole can drown if rains too often. Usually flawed. What is your opinion in having about half way on the side of the planter container, the drain hole ? Will not drown; will be harder to become dry as would hold very moist or wet soil at bottom. for a much longer time. Have not tried yet but soon to experiment... after your comments.

  15. I would be interested in a thread on anthropology and gender identity. How have other cultures approached it, what options existed for the mismatched or nonbinary before surgical or endocrine interventions were available, are there modern cultures where gender fluidity is easier, are there cultures where just a wardrobe change satisfies all parties, etc. (sorry, I realize I have probably suggested several threads right there) Just as economists benefit when anthropologists go out and study credit and debt in other societies, so too could psychologists benefit when anthropologists go where gender norms are different. We often get boxed into disciplines where …

So, I have always been interested in keeping fit and healthy, exercise, diets, food management and the short/long term effects on health. I'm an active person, reasonably athletic and have, in general, kept myself in reasonable shape (though not strictly consistent, and recently due to the covid restrictions). Although I'm quite knowledgeable on exercising and keeping fit through activity etc..., my knowledge of diet and food management is limited to what I've read in popular magazines and the fads of diets etc... over the years. I have maintained what I felt was a reasonable diet though again not strictly consistent. I have also experimented in the past with the od…

Who is correct? This is a current dispute between a government agency and environmental group about how best to limit the spread of fires. Who has the most compelling argument? My bias is towards the enviro position: thinning down improves the parameters for good combustion, and therefore spread.

How fast can crops be bred for certain traits assuming we start with wild plants? Can 1% increse in average mass or speed of growth per decade be achieved if there are 10,000s or 100,000 of people breeding that crop and it is annual?

  21. Started by Hans de Vries,

Do you think cattails would be good as a crop today or as a founder crop for a civilization? This is an ubiquitous plant that grows on shores more or less everywhere in Europe. All parts of the plant are edible at different periods of the year. The root is the most nutritious, 266 kcal/100 g from the wild variety.

Do you think domesticated Caribou could be selectively bred to a size similar to that of horses and provide a viable alternative to horses in North America? Raindeer were domesticated and raindeer and caribou are practically the same.

There was a fire in an apartment facing directly opposite mine a few weeks ago, literally a few feet from my apartment, which destroyed the tenant's apartment (they've been relocated). I was away at the time. The damaged apartment is yet to undergo cleaning/renovation. While I did not notice any structural damage to my own apartment, there was sooty water leakage through the front door (now cleaned) and a fire smoke smell. Special fans were used to help clean the air in the hallways, but they weren't put in apartments. For my apartment I opened all windows and placed fans blowing outwards, and used an air purifier and AC. I did that for at least a few hours at …

  24. Hello you all! The free video game Sea Hero Quest challenges the player's navigation ability wikipedia Many people played, so their performance enables statistics, the trick that lets scam look scientific. One study found correlations with countries' GDP per capita and gender gap biorxiv.org or hal.archives-ouvertes.fr or (restricted) sciencedirect.com but I see only a correlation there. Strong counter-examples in the paper's map tell that the relation is weak: South Africa, Russia and Malaysia fare better than the richer Italy and Spain. So could there be better relationships? Do countries of seafarers obtain better results? Not really. The Filippi…
