Freeman Dyson is the last of the greatest 20th century physicists, a colleague of Einstein and Feynman, Professor Emeritus of Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study, who wrote Imagined Worlds which has a chapter on ETHICS that documents the facts about why scientists have failed Humanity for over 50 years. Some of the more important quotes that characterize scientific culture are: The most historic warning of all is reserved for the UC National Labs, the worst case example of tenured welfare state scientific culture devoid of humanitarian motivation characterized by Dyson, is contained in President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 1961 Farewell Address to the Nation: It …

Are light rays physical? When it reflects off of the objects. After a while, would the object show signs of wear. Maybe in a million years or something, cause if it does then what would the rate be?

Recently, I read from the journal (forgot what. It was in library) about alcohols. Alcoholism is a chronic disease that can be cured. I know, heard, and learned that there are rehabs which help people about quitting alcohols and coming back to the normal life. But I don't think alcoholism is never "cured." I mean, only reason that those people do not drink is because they're afraid of what will happen if they start drinking again. It does not really "remove" the desires to drink. So, I don't think alcoholism is something that can be cured. Is my argument true or scientifically, alcoholism can be cured?

Would anyone know where I can find the average width and height of the eastern mole? I need this information for an interesting chemistry project. I've been googling for this information for more than an hour before I head to the library, but it seems no one in the world has ever included any width and/or height of any mole specimen. The length, on the other hand, was a piece of information easily obtained.

I've noticed that there are many threads here with people looking for science fair ideas, so now instead of starting a new thread, you can simply look here. If you have any ideas for a science fair project, please post a reply with your idea. Lets try to make a big collection!

We are currently in Plate Techtonics in Earth Science, and I'm having a complete brain freeze. I know..this may sound stupid but... What kind of data did Hess collect that allowed him to develop his theory of sea floor spreading? Why is the oldest seafloor crust found farthest from a mid ocean ridge? How can the magnetic orientation of rocks be used to trace the way a continent moved and drifted?

(published mainly in Electronic Journal of Theoretical Physics: http://www.ejtp.com) Ernst Mach about time: It is utterly beyond our power to measure the changes of things by time. Quite the contrary, time is an abstraction at which we arrive by means of the changes of things. Albert Einstein about time: Space and time are modes by which we think, not conditions under which we live." Time--the time that we know through clocks and calendars--was invented. http://www.britannica.com/clockworks/article.html Roger Penrose about time: The temporal ordering that we 'appear' to perceive is, I am claiming, something that we impose upon our perceptions in order to…

I am still trying to wrap my mind around the run of black hole discussions I have seen recently. Fortunately, my cat Bella has been helping me out. She likes playing with a shoelace. It doesn’t matter where I put it; she will find it and drag it out again. If I throw it in the trash, she will be on it before the echo dies down, showing only her hindquarters and tail as she digs it out. After she has lost interest in the shoelace, it is no longer straight. Saying that the shoelace is not straight though does not really tell you much about it. She may have left it wadded up in a corner, draped over the armchair with one end dangling, or just left as a double strand …

I understand that there are blast furnaces and electric arc furnaces, but is it possible to generate an incredibly intense amount of heat (1500 degrees C) within a short period of time? Flash heating? I've considered the usage of thermite, but I have no other idea.

Hello everyone, I'm new so I hope I am posting this in the correct section. I have a new (new as of December) 2006 Scion xB. The question is that in the cold weather when you turn the engine on and the heater turns on and for a few seconds the windshield fogs up, I can see at least 4 perfect cirlces on the windshield perfectly spaced apart close to the middle. There may or may not be more, it is hard to see them as they only appear for a couple seconds. I was wondering if anyone knows what these could be? Theres nothing that would have been placed on the windsheild (its much too steep anyway). They are ~3 inches in diameter. The only theory I have is that it is the s…

September 13th 1999...the moon blasts out of Earth orbit and the inahabitants of MoonBase Alpha faces a struggle for survival and begins an amazing space voyage. Anyone remember this famous Sci Fi classic from the 1970's Space 1999? I was gazing at the moon after watching re runs of this fabulous show. And something struck me. You may have seen on the news last year that NASA wants to go back to the moon and hopefully they will build a base there. In addition on the news tonight there are dire warnings about Global Warming being worse than previously thought. I would love to see a moonbase called Alpha built !! Do you think that we have the technology today to recreate M…

Hi all I am a new poster but have been visiting this site for some time now. I don't know what it is that I am looking for, I just know that I don't know what my next steps should be. First of all let me tell you what I have found Through a series of serendipitous events I have discovered the complete timing and replication process of DNA and the clock to which the DNA Helix is governed. There is nothing chaotic about DNA, it follows a tight schedule and never deviates from it's path. Because it is so highly structured it allows us to deterine which part of the DNA Helix is active at any given time. There are 6 DNA combinations which produce 12 basic …

well i was just sitting outside and i just came to think if you could light a match in space. Wouldn't this be not possible since a flame needs oxygen to burn and the atmosphere affects the flames color. And since space is like a vacumne without any oxygen, wouldnt this be impossible? Just a question that was bothering me. i really dont know as much as you guys do, but i'm hoping i can learn from you guys. please correct me if i'm wrong.
