  1. Matter has an order of structure and substructure eh? What if there was an atom that went by a different order of structure? Say the electrons, protons and nuetrons of this atom are all one hundred times smaller than all known elements, actually it would be more than a different elements, cause all the elements are made of particles of the same size, just in different numbers, correct? Mayhaps the substructures of this alternate matter particle are also different (not quarks, or quarks that work differently or somethin). What'd be the properties of a clump of this type of matter? Maybe it could spill through traditional matter, appear flow through it as if it is nothing .…

If there were alternate universes, there would be infinate of them for every possible random movement of subatomic particles---- eh? Yeah well I don't think there are anyway. But if there are I bet in one of those universes I am not a loser. I wish I was there. (my depression has nothing to do with my paranoa of banning (recently conquered), I'm not THAT kind of a loser.

Hi, I remebered something from a while back that I read in a Dilbert book. Scott adams proposes an alternative theory to gravity, that upon brief thought seems possible, but pretty impossible to prove. Here's an excert: Scott Adams , The Dilbert Future. Can anyone explain why this is not faesible? p.s. apologies for the sorta unformatted quote

Hi, got a query, I remember reading about two types of energy a while ago, and I can't find them anywhere. I'm not even sure if I imagined them or not. All I get from web searches are different types of fusion, renewable energy or energy companies. Can anybody tell me the names of them please, sorry for poor descriptions, 1) apparently if you can squeeze water through a really tiny space it will produce electricity? 2) this one involves vibrating an atom, I think, to produce electricity? again, sorry for really rubbish descriptions but that's all I can remember, that's why I was searching for them. Was going to post in news. The second on…

So, in all of my spare time (which is like, nothing... ), I'm undertaking a rather ambitious project, and I'd like some help as to where I should start. The long and short of the project is to create a grid, similar to an LCD display, that: Controls the "status" (on or off) of infrared light Is backlit by an infrared laser Can control areas smaller than the size of the laser beam (in other words, multiple cells in the grid per laser beam - with preferrably only ONE laser beam - just like the many pixels in an LCD screen to the one backlight) Is controlled, whether directly or indirectly, through electric current, preferrably distributed in some type of grid Conta…

Since the first law of thermodynamics says that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted to one form or another....then the amount of energy when the universe was created would be total amount of energy available in the universe? Is there a way to know how much energy there was when the universe was created? Or maybe can one quantize the amount of energy say on earth and the atmosphere?

I think most people at sometime or another heard the sound an Amplifier makes when you touch the input lead, that sort of Burrrrrrr, sound. I`de like to know what causes it? now at 1`st the answer may seem simple but for a few reasons. the same sound occurs even on battery powered amps in the middle of nowhere. the sound is always the same frequency too? about 50 to 60Hz ish. that made me wonder if it was something to do with mains electricity around the Earth. or maybe the fact that were struck by lightening about 50 times per second at least somewhere on Earth at any given time (but the frequency seems to constant for that to be possible). It occurs on ships in the mi…

SO. do you guys think the American population should have the influence that it does on the way scientific research and/or methods are practiced? trying to get some input here since I'm supposed to have my topic picked two weeks ago.... it's for an argumentative essay for english... personally, I think the influence should be lessened greatly, people who can't look further than the next week or so and don't understand what they're viewing have no place in saying what's what

(Disclaimer: I couldn't think of any where to put this since I don't know which category it would go under) I'm, by no means, any sort of scientist. I'm a 13 year old in 8th grade. But one thing I love about the universe is space. I really, really want to go out there some time and I figure I'll never live long enough or be fit enough to be an astronaut. And so, I came up with an idea. It's like a black box, but for humans. It records everything in your brain (memories, etc.) and stores them inside it. Then, once you die, they can put this "second brain" into a new body (robotic or other) and you pretty much be reanimated. This could mean time travel (waiting a long peri…

Hello everyone, I'm new so I hope I am posting this in the correct section. I have a new (new as of December) 2006 Scion xB. The question is that in the cold weather when you turn the engine on and the heater turns on and for a few seconds the windshield fogs up, I can see at least 4 perfect cirlces on the windshield perfectly spaced apart close to the middle. There may or may not be more, it is hard to see them as they only appear for a couple seconds. I was wondering if anyone knows what these could be? Theres nothing that would have been placed on the windsheild (its much too steep anyway). They are ~3 inches in diameter. The only theory I have is that it is the s…

Here are the analogies that inspired this: Pangloss's Grocer/President analogy: http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showpost.php?p=226783&postcount=36 Then there was the second analogy: http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showpost.php?p=226909&postcount=39 And my subsequent response: http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showpost.php?p=226929&postcount=41 So now that you're all caught up... I've played quite a few video games, and I've tried to come up with an analysis of games themselves which go beyond specific popular genres (e.x. first person shooter games). These are some of the qualities that I've seen that most games have (some of these qualities may be applicable to other types of games, such as board games or sports): *Aesthetic qualities - These refer to features such as the graphics, music, characters, and storyline. What makes these things "good" or "bad" is somewhat subjective. *Control - This refers to how the player performs movements or actions in a game. A 2D platformer game where players only move in 4 directions has more precise …

Guys, today I stumbled upon a very interesting facebook post about 'ancient aliens' (Link: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=682148158492150&set=a.553678744672426.1073741827.537717429601891&type=1&theater). I have seen a few episodes of the 'Ancient Aliens' series on History TV. Some of the unexplained phenomenons like the Nazka Lines, Crop circles, Statues on the Easter Island really confuse me. So, what's your opinion on the 'Ancient Aliens' theory?

It has been long touted that ancient Mars was a water world much like Earth is today but was it? Is it even possible? I suggest that ancient Mars was more of an ice world far more similar to Europa than Earth. The Sun was significantly dimmer then so Mars should need a more extensive atmosphere than Earth to maintain liquid water but an ice world similar to Europa could not only have maintained liquid water under the ice but as the ice retreated into space along with the atmosphere, due to being closer to the sun, geological patterns like rivers and lakes could have formed beneath the retreating glaciers much like happens on Earth. Unlike Earth rivers and streams th…

  20. I don't subscribe to modern science. Here's why: That genuine science began as a branch of ancient philosophy. Modern science disowns it's ancestry for the sake of modern commercial interests, primarily institutions descending from mass manufactures. So this thread concerns the science I subscribe to, that being ancient science. That being said, I noticed today in my natural observations, some moss growing along the railroad as I was doing my daily winter rounds for next year's crop. And I remembered how moss will grow without soil and actually manufacture it. I remembered how vivid green it grows even sometimes on manmade concrete. I remembered that modern…

It is generally accepted that the Amazon basin once drained into the Pacific, and that when the Andes formed it begin flowing in the opposite direction. I am wondering what the process would have been like, I see alternatives: * Would it have changed direction immediately once a certain threshold was met? * Would there have been two separate basins flowing in separate directions and the Eastern one slowly grew in size? * bWould a large part of South America be flooded into a giant dam, with outlets on both sides? I cannot clearly see what would have happened.

I thought it would be fun to make a thread of annoying myths. I'm sure everyone is annoyed by myths that the naive general public sometimes belief. Ok some of mine: There is no gravity in space (when the astronauts go up) Humans only use 10% of there brain. (I guess this is debatable) Seasons are caused by how far away from the sun earth is. Creationism (I had to say it) These are all I've heard people say and believe to be true. I bet everyone has heard some.

i was at a loud concert of some sort. The music is so loud it temproraily damages your ears (obviously in the long run more permenantly if exposed too much, but thats not really relevant to the concerning issue). This of coarse makes it harder to hear the music. I realized if i lightly plugged my ears, i was shielded from the full volume, and yet what i did hear seemed to be much clearer music. I wondered if this had to do with the soundwaves using my fingers as antenaes, and since sound travels faster (and more efficiently?) through a solid (my fingers being more solid than air). If that is not in any degree really correct, tell me, but if my deduction is right . . .…
