What's going on in the world and how it relates to science.

This event went appears to not have been noticed here while it's significant to world geopolitics. On 29th June 2014 Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS) declared the reestablishment of the Caliphate - a theological dictatorship uniting all Muslims worldwide. It's the first such attempt since 1924 when the Ottoman Empire ceased to exist, replaced by a secular republic. ISIS leader, Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, A.K.A Abu Dua A.K.A Ibrahim Awwad Ibrahim Al Badri Al Samarri was choosen as a caliph. He holds a Ph.D in Islamic jurisprudence from Baghdad University and has been a militant since the US-led invasion of Iraq. After a blitzkrieg in June/July his state now controls …

According to the BBC ten Iranian PhD science students have been told they will have to leave Norway due to international sanctions. Basically, the worry is that these students could gain the skills to help develop Iran's nuclear programme. BBC News. (Follow link below) The students and their supporters say that these claims are baseless and wrong. However, it has crossed my mind that the West should be banning more students from countries like Iran. Why help governments we do not like in trainning their scientists and engineers, especially is we are worried that they could develop nuclear weapons? The same should be said of chemical and biological w…

  3. As of the past couple of years, I've been studying law. I'm not in law school, but I've been re-evaluation various aspects of law. There is the continual argument that ignorance is no excuse for the law on the premises that (1) the government puts out information for its people to understand and know the law and that (2) ignorance of the law would be willful (that is to say that people willingly seek out to know and understand the law. Allegedly, these two premises are supposed to enable people to be pro se, thus their own attorneys. However, in the face of the metaphysical argument that anything is "willfully" done, there exist determinist if but fatalistic arguments. Al…

Franz Ferdinand (18 December 1863 – 28 June 1914) was an Archduke of Austria-Este, Austro-Hungarian and Royal Prince of Hungary and of Bohemia, and from 1889 until his death, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne.[1] His assassination in Sarajevo precipitated Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia. This caused the Central Powers (including Germany and Austria-Hungary) and the Allies of World War I (countries allied with Serbia or Serbia's allies) to declare war on each other, starting World War I.[2][3][4]

Most of you know that Texas has a group of people running around in public with assault rifles. Texas also has a Stand Your Ground law. Now, what happens when a responsible gun owner reasonably confuses a nutjob with an assault rifle with a nutjob with an assault rifle and stands his or her ground?

A few months back there was a topic called Objective Global Warming. While I do not support the Global Warming claims. I do support the scientists that do want to make the world better. As such this topic is not here to debate whether Global Cooling is happening or not. Rather it is to see what ideas anyone has to help curve the ramifications of Global Cooling. Like global warming, cooling has just as many nasty effects for the world. I will name a few off hand! 1.Crops no longer grow in areas that were once fertile. This is undoubtedly the most horrific of things that will occur with a global cooling. This also leads to another disaster. 2. Famine, if crops no lo…

Through its use of satire and the presentation of a concept in another context helps to illuminate some of the key problems facing healthcare in the US. Some of this has been improved slightly since the implementation of the ACA, but most of it still rings true. This video presents what the experience would be for an air traveler if booking your trip worked the same way as our "modern" healthcare in the US. The crazy part is that you don't have to strain to imagine how awful this would be. Is there any chance we get this fixed or improved in the current political climate? Other systems in other countries seem to do this all much better, but are the…

A nonexistence of the optimal voting system can be proven in many situations, I wanted to propose a general discussion about choosing the best voting systems for various purposes and countries. Especially regarding the most interesting - parliamentary election: there is a territory divided into districts in which people vote for local candidates (usually representing one of parties), and we want to find seat apportionment to fulfill two priorities: 1) The total number of seats of different parties is proportional to their total number of votes, 2) Locally there are chosen those having majority of votes. Unfortunately these two priorities exclude each other – there are usu…

  12. For the past several years I have been studying the world political structure. It is quite different than the propaganda we receive in the U.S through the (control) party system in the U.S. What is happening in the Ukraine is to be expected. A flag, a action to start something bigger. While many of you sit back and hope nothing comes of it. The reality is this is WORLD WAR III. In all aspects, both militarily, and economically. Before I go into more detail about why this is WWIII. I have decided to bring up earlier studies from years past. One of my studies was to see how Russians view the rest of the world. I am curious about them as much as they are curious about u…

Michael Sam is the first openly gay man to enter the National Football League. He was drafted in the last round, so emotions were pretty high. He cried and kissed his partner after hearing the good news. The kiss was appropriate - not overly done or anything. The type of kiss that straight guys and their girlfriends have with no issues expressed. But, some players and others expressed outrage, using children viewers as an excuse. I think it is especially great if children were watching, so they don't grow up ignorant. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/ex-nfl-player-rips-espn-showing-michael-sam-kiss-article-1.1788608 What do you think? As the title suggests, I would like to have a discussion about why marijuana should or should not be legal. If you have an opinion on the matter I would care to hear it. My opinion on the matter is that marijuana should be legal if regulated correctly. In America marijuana is considered to be worse than cocaine, meth-amphetamines, Oxycontin, and opiates. I believe marijuana is less addictive than alcohol, or nicotine. I also think it is safer to be buzzed on marijuana than alcohol. I believe the withdrawal from marijuana is less severe than alcohol or nicotine. Upon the fact that marijuana is proven to have medicinal purposes as well, I see no reason this drug should …

  16. Thought this would be a interesting debate subject. Was talking to my friend in the UK. He laughed pretty hard and told me that it should be expected as the U.S is full of religious zealotry. Of course I replied in kind. But it seems that perhaps religion plays a role. At least the Supreme Court thinks so. Here is the story http://www.wtop.com/319/3616345/High-court-ruling-favors-prayer-at-council-meeting Do you believe prayer should be allowed before a meeting of government officials? Does prayer affect you in a significant way whether pro or con? Do you believe the supreme court was right on its decision? Just a few of the questions that interest me. I personally …

I find if amusing that our politicians are looking for someone to take the fall for our recent rash of misguided investments. The politicians are clearly the ones responible for setting the bar too high and trying to manhandle the science behind our technology. Who decided that we need to demand that an aircraft must be built to accomodate more than one specialized role and only fund the winner. is the aircraft company at fault? of course not. they must comply with the request when it will only be bought if it meets such criteria. they further insult cooperation by overseeing all aspects of such operations. this was a clear attempt by politicians to control the developm…

  19. Last night, I watched the debate of the political leaders of the different fractions in the EU parliament (essentially something like a presidential debate, be warned, it's 1h 30min long). The debate was mostly quite interesting, and rather polite, but as you might expect, there was a moment where the politicians kept interrupting and disrupting each other to the point where I thought that it was trolling. The part at 1 hour 11 min is in my opinion the worst, where the moderators lost control completely for a brief moment. I had an idea how to improve these kinds of debates, where all participants wish to maximize the attention on themselves, and to respond to eve…

When I say fool I mean a person who is willing to pull out every dirty, under handed trick in the book to win an argument. Be it demeaning your character, ignoring your argument all together or using band wagon tactics against you. In debating there is a lot of dirty tricks that can be pulled. The reason these type of people do this is because they do not have any faith in what they are trying to feed you or their own ability to argue the point. Some people use intimidation to talk you down regardless of there being any actual substance in the argument they have or not. Thanks to these "Dirty tactics" you often lose your reputation if you are an intelligent debater or not…

  21. Abortion is a substantial decision to make and it can be very difficult at times. It is happening more and more around the world and it is becoming more common as the years go by. Some people decide to get it by decision and some by force; some by accident and some on purpose. Whatever the reason, it is truly important to know what can happen in result of this process. That is what my research is about; to know what you can gain and lose from this process and how this will affect you in your future. With our topic being about abortion, I think the most fascinating thing is the children involved. The person who chooses to have abortion is willing to give away their chi…

  22. I think somehow all governments should have a forum in which all representatives are required to have an account, respond to at least one post a week, and all issues that wouldn't hurt national securities be discussed. I also think any nation that sets up a forum like this should be interlinked so as to squash as many disputes as possible. Any person in the world should have access to these forums and be able to post after creating an account. To create an account a person must register with a valid ID at a proper location. In America for example, a person could sign up at the BMV, post office, state accredited library, state college, etc. Officials of the country would…

  24. 1). My group’s topic is abortion and my main question that I twitter searched is, Should Abortion be allowed in the United States. When I searched this question on twitter I found some answers that were pro life and many others that were pro choice. When it comes to a topic like Abortion there is always two sides to it; people that are against it and people that are for it. In my twitter search I found a lot more tweets saying Abortion should be allowed because there is freedom in the United States. 2). What I find very interesting that has a major role in this topic is the women who actually do abortion. I am just interested in the state of mind she is in. I can’t e…

Firstly, I must say that I am a callouse individual when it comes to people who don't care about themselves or life in general. Misery loves company and that's why it hates me. I am curious how this community feels about peoples right to their own body, and to which extent that right should be taken away. I myself have a strong bias on this topic and wish to elaborate my thoughts a little further. I feel as though people should have a right to do as they wish to themselves with no legal reprimand as long as they are not directly affecting another persons health with their current drug use. I see no point in keeping things illegal when there is more practical ways to do …
