  3. Just how much sway does large corporations and politics have on science and technology? I would have to say, profoundly, as well as, none whatsoever. Science without the hazards of the human element are deemed laws. Yet how those laws can be manipulated are governed usually by the investor. A wanna-be dictator would produce a very different set of results concerning "free energy" than would a philanthropist's results would they not? So what I'm asking is this, are we really sure of the things that we claim to be really sure about? In my mind, I feel that amateurs are especially needed for this "problem" since yes, they haven't yet learned the work of their predessesors, b…

Computers are beating humans in chess but the man-man contest still elicits interest. How about training our diplomats in chess and have negotiations over a board of 64 squares ? (I have heard of romantic associations being formed over the chess board.).

This thread seems to be dying out, so let's throw another log on the fire... The BLM movement was created to protest the systemic profiling and discrimination against Black people, by police forces, leading to stops/arrests/deaths, simply because all black people are seen as criminals, not just the few that actually are. The approach, so far, has been to call all policemen racists, even Black cops, not just the few that actually are. Often times, the cop ( shooter ) is 'convicted' in the street, by people who don't have all the facts/evidence, just before rioting breaks out. And none of the members of BLM speak out against the few crazies amongst them who advoca…

This is a thread that should cover the wider range of issue than the ISIS thread. By defeating political Islam I mean either destroying the movement completely or at least weakening it to such a degree that it is not able to attract a significant number of followers, and therefore, unable to seize power anywhere. The main discussion should be global strategy - i.e. the one that can be used on a wide scale. But discussion about "tactical" level (limited to one contry or even a single region of some country) are welcomed as well. The timescale about 2015-2050 - what to do and what not to do. We may also discuss the current "war on terror" and it's consequences -…

I would be interested in discussing this further, if it can be done in accordance with the rules on civility and slurs, and the rules against logical fallacies (as I see both strawmen and characterization that would fall under the slur category in the above). Pick one, Tampitump, and tell us what you think it means and/or what issues you have with it. I'm guessing your view will be very different than what others think.

No, not that one. The Bush White House one. THE GEORGE W. BUSH WHITE HOUSE ‘LOST’ 22 MILLION EMAILS http://www.newsweek.com/2016/09/23/george-w-bush-white-house-lost-22-million-emails-497373.html I'm not seeing the same outrage and consternation despite the much larger scope of the problem, and were talking about the whole of the White House as the scope, and subpoenas being ignored. Plus, the pattern of which emails are lost suggests that these were not lost by accident. The Clinton White House set up a system to prevent deletion of such emails, but that system was bypassed with the private system of the Bush administration.

Several years ago I heard a woman with a Jaquar complain that sometimes when she went over a significant bump, the car would die (crash safety protection automatically cutting fuel supply) and she would have to pull over, with no power steering, come to a stop with no power brakes, and wait 5 minutes for the system to reset. I often find my car locked when I go to open the back door to put my computer behind the seat. And since it is parked in my garage, I have no need to have it locked, but even if I leave the window open, when I reach in to hit the unlock button it does not function. I have to either put my computer down and get out my keys, or reach in through t…

In the wake of the shootings in Connecticut, the lawmakers in the state of Oklahoma (my home state) are working towards legislature that would allow CLEET-certified teachers and principals to carry firearms at school and school events. http://kfor.com/2012/12/17/rep-wants-teachers-to-carry-guns-at-school/ I am aware of our other thread concerning gun control, but I would like to hear what other members and parents here at SFN feel about this type of action being taken by our lawmakers. Sure, you may not live in Oklahoma, but if our lawmakers here can pass this type of legislation, then governments can pass the same sort of measures regardless where you live. Pers…

New laws in Texas now allow students to carry guns - and in particular concealed handguns - on all campuses. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-36948149 Is this not a bit crazy? Will it scare off potential students from other states and indeed international students? What about the saftey of staff? Armed students does not sound great when it comes to dealing with differnces of opinion - say in relation to grades. What are your thoughts on this?

  18. The US earned the title of the "melting pot", and for a time, we were proud of our heritage of assimilating immigrants into our society and benefiting from the strength it gave us. We understood that a blend, a mixture of peoples, ideologies, and cultures gave us a power few nations at the time had. For-profit media practices simplify issues down to a single point. They need to get their messages across quickly in a way that locks in viewers. It seems to manipulate many people to identify themselves in those single aspects; conservative OR liberal, capitalist OR socialist, but never both, the way it really is. Did the media upend the melting pot? Single ideologies do…

  19. While there may be a number of racist cops, I find it hard to believe that these guys go out to find a 'black man to shoot today". Might a lot of it have to do with the fact that cops are actually scared when they make these stops because EVERYBODY is armed in the US ? As a matter of fact both of the two black victims were carrying. Is America's love of guns at the root of the problem ? A lot of good cops have been included with the bad in the eyes of black America and brought about the BLM movement. I now fear that a lot of decent black Americans will be lumped in with the two jackasses who opened fire on the police in Dallas.

  21. This question came out of a friend's comments about whether or not the RNC should be allowed to use a song by Queen. Long story short, my friend asserted that a Christian baker should be required to bake a cake for a gay wedding, but Queen should not be required to sell song usage rights to a conservative. His reasoning was that "one you're born with, one you choose". This got me thinking. In the first place, I don't believe it is as simple as "one you're born with, one you choose". My understanding is that there is some evidence for the heritability of both, and both are open questions. It is even possible, based on my limited reading on the topic, that political ori…
