What's going on in the world and how it relates to science.

  1. Jordan Peterson said something along the lines of the Supreme court nomination being racist from the begining because the US administration said they are going to pick a black female and people do not understand what the issue is with affirmative action, he states that not only it is racist because we are ignoring an entire set of people who have appplied for this job but we are actually creating a climate of racism because now as individuals we have to look at people of color who are in these high positions and were going to say - Did you really get that position based on your merit or did you get it because youre black or youre female? And the people involved are going …

  2. When Trump pressured Raffensperger to cheat and give him 11,780 more votes, it would only give Trump a TIE. Trump complained he was behind by 11,779 votes ("one more than we have"), so if Raffensperger would "FIND" 11,780 votes that would exactly match the number of Biden votes, and it would BE A TIE 😁 Trump: "So look, all I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have, because we won the state." Trump knows he won the state because he has big rallies and Biden doesn't. ‘I just want to find 11,780 votes’: Trump pressures Georgia officials as state’s runoffs approach (yahoo.com)

  5. Yeh, but it's one law for the rich, and another for the poor. 😄 Roman Abramovitch came to the UK, bought Chelsea Football Club, spent billions building it up into the top club in the whole world, and they jump on his assets without even trial. Meanwhile, people come from the gutter in Somalia, Eritrea and Lithuania, bring nothing with them, and they rape, rob and murder, and we shower them with lawyers, psychiatrists and benfits. It's always the poor what gets the gravy, and the rich what gets the blame !

The justice has a voting record of weakening voting rights, and a slavish devotion to Republican agendas aimed at reducing the chances of fair elections. His wife is a conservative activist who sounds like she's gone down the QAnon rabbit hole, and doesn't care who the majority voted for.

We have seen Trump's pitch on the Russian move into Ukraine. "Isn't Putin smart? But I am pally with him and together we will come to an arrangement that suits the two of us and shithouses like Ukraine will do as they are told when I am elected" A fair paraphrase? How likely that he will gain (enough) support for his Make Trump and Putin Great Again project ?

For anyone who's been paying attention, the notion that Trump will voluntarily concede the election (even if he has been legitimately and resoundingly defeated) is undoubtedly not based in reality. Trump is not the type of person to graciously bow out. Trump will use any and all means at his disposal to retain power, and has already laid the groundwork via the bully pulpit to deny the authenticity of the election results: through his constant efforts in the media to undermine the legitimacy of mail in voting, the Republican efforts to limit access to in person voting, and their attempts to get mail in ballots thrown out on fabricated technicalities by the courts. …

  9. Is blocking Russian state media broadcasts counterproductive to the western audience getting a clear multi-sided view of the conflict... even if it's totally false? It may make our western governments look to be doing the same as our adversaries: controlling the narrative and what we see i.e. propaganda.... pot, kettle.

  10. At work a large number of motorists seem unaware of the new changes. They come into force this weekend. With the understandable pressure of COVID and other it would be expected that Government publicity is low. Laws can have good intent and bad consequences as well as be fatally flawed. In Germany pedestrians always had priority. In UK it was cars. I prefer the old UK system re pedestrians. Its going to very scary. Especially on dark winter nights crossing junctions. Most cars 99% on probability will give way. 1 % will not. Simply because they do NOT see the pedestrian at the junction. Pedestrians will comfortably cross because they see the bright lights of cars who ar…

Exeter University is the nearest university to me. Here is a quote from journalist alumnus J Irwandi about his prizewinning photo during the covid pandemic, although he was villified by both government and private authorities for 'fake news' at the time. His example was from coronavirus, but I ask it in a much wider context.

  12. Could President Putin be suffering the effects of mild COVID.? Certainly one of the symptoms is increased aggression.Medical science should discuss.Meanwhile a part humurous piece below: Privet/Zdravstvuyte Comrade, VK.com is used by 80% of Russians. Most Russians speak English. However, beware. It will ask for detailed personal information. It’s essential to lie. Using a nonstandard password is imperative. Details leak onto the dark internet. You do not want that. Most Russians have friends and relatives in Ukraine. They do not want war. Although outside the cities they are less aware. They are fed a diet of fake news. Of course I am speaking of the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. Most wars have been fought for the same reason. It is one group trying to take what another group has. It is no different with Russia's invasion of the Ukraine. Because the Ukraine has much that Russia would like to have easier access to. One of which is that the Ukraine produces more food than any other European country. Oh how right George Santayana was when he said, "Only the dead have seen the end of war."

Is it a wise move for Biden to limit the field of potential candidates to black women just because there hasn't been one? Should not the best qualified person be chosen to such an important position, irrespective of gender and ethnicity? If that turns out, after collective deliberation, to be a black woman, then all well and good, but is it a sound way to do this? Is affirmative action not politicizing the process and discriminating against an equally qualified pool of candidates that don't fit that category? Occasional Republican ally of Democratic legislation seems to think so:

  15. NHS staff, officials, and government ministers are currently debating the logic and efficacy of a proposed vaccine mandate for NHS staff. Up to 80,000 NHS staff have said they will not comply with the mandatory vaccination policy for Covid -19. Their main reason for rejecting the mandate seems to be a lack of long term safety data (as opposed to other vaccines, such as for Hep B, which has 30+ years of safety data) and also natural immunity being built up by repeated exposure to the virus. The most serious consequence of implementing the policy would be the loss of so many critical care staff when the NHS is already under strain. Even those who support the mandate…

Now I don’t know what is going on at the college campus or what they are teaching in women studies these days but many conservatives and psychologist like Jordan Peterson's are speaking out about the feminism movement. So I have no idea what they are teaching in the schools in women studies or what the goal is but it seems many conservatives and psychologist are speaking out now. They do not elaborate on what they are doing or what they are teaching in schools other than saying they are e…

  17. One thing we know, more Americans died of COVID-19 than people of any other country. It's almost as though the COVID-19 virus was fitted with a American-genome-adhesive feature that particularly fancied Americans. No really, look at the trajectory COVID took after "It's origination in the Chinese area". It could have spread out like a breeze, or it could have spread towards the Asian areas, but it took a definite course towards the USA....think that ain't weird? Now, who would want Americans dead? Many people, and not just people from middle eastern countries. If you look down history, who have Americans messed with? The list is long. Vietnam, Iraq, and Japan,…

  18. In India, you are either rich or poor, either ugly or beautiful, either good or evil. In USA, you can be all the above. In India, there is segregation between castes/classes. For the very reason that Patel is poor and Rajiv is rich, Patel and Rajiv simply cannot mix. They cannot be allowed in the same playpen. If they are, then Poor Patel will steal from Rich Rajiv. In USA, both Tom and Harry are equally well off. Neither is extravagantly rich, nor poor. But they can mix. They can be friends. Rich Rajiv migrates to USA, and is forced to be friends with middle class Harry. He doesnt like it. Every instinct in Rich Rajiv bays 'no!' Rich Richard, the …

Even though Canada is over 80% ( 83 % for 1st dose ), apparently a lot of people still think vaccination is too much of an imposition on their rights and freedoms. At the current time, several thousand heavy trucks are converging on Parliament hill, in Ottawa, to protest vaccination mandates. The truck connection is the requirement for truckers crossing the border to make deliveries to be vaccinated, whether entering Canada, or the US. Apparently J Trudeau, our Prime Minister, didn't think it was enough to claim he had been exposed to someone who tested positive, and would be in isolation; he actually left the Capital for an unknown location, fearing a US style,…

What I do understand as an outsider, is that the USA's enemies must be rubbing their hands in glee, at the prospect..... https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jan/09/is-the-us-really-heading-for-a-second-civil-war Is the US really heading for a second civil war? With the country polarised and Republicans embracing authoritarianism, some experts fear a Northern Ireland-style insurgency but others say armed conflict remains improbable Joe Biden had spent a year in the hope that America could go back to normal.
