What's going on in the world and how it relates to science.

  1. Could President Putin be suffering the effects of mild COVID.? Certainly one of the symptoms is increased aggression.Medical science should discuss.Meanwhile a part humurous piece below: Privet/Zdravstvuyte Comrade, VK.com is used by 80% of Russians. Most Russians speak English. However, beware. It will ask for detailed personal information. It’s essential to lie. Using a nonstandard password is imperative. Details leak onto the dark internet. You do not want that. Most Russians have friends and relatives in Ukraine. They do not want war. Although outside the cities they are less aware. They are fed a diet of fake news. Comrade Putin may be suffering…

Of course I am speaking of the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. Most wars have been fought for the same reason. It is one group trying to take what another group has. It is no different with Russia's invasion of the Ukraine. Because the Ukraine has much that Russia would like to have easier access to. One of which is that the Ukraine produces more food than any other European country. Oh how right George Santayana was when he said, "Only the dead have seen the end of war."

Is it a wise move for Biden to limit the field of potential candidates to black women just because there hasn't been one? Should not the best qualified person be chosen to such an important position, irrespective of gender and ethnicity? If that turns out, after collective deliberation, to be a black woman, then all well and good, but is it a sound way to do this? Is affirmative action not politicizing the process and discriminating against an equally qualified pool of candidates that don't fit that category? Occasional Republican ally of Democratic legislation seems to think so:

  4. NHS staff, officials, and government ministers are currently debating the logic and efficacy of a proposed vaccine mandate for NHS staff. Up to 80,000 NHS staff have said they will not comply with the mandatory vaccination policy for Covid -19. Their main reason for rejecting the mandate seems to be a lack of long term safety data (as opposed to other vaccines, such as for Hep B, which has 30+ years of safety data) and also natural immunity being built up by repeated exposure to the virus. The most serious consequence of implementing the policy would be the loss of so many critical care staff when the NHS is already under strain. Even those who support the mandate…

  5. I have notice lot of conservatives now are making reference to the feminism movement being evil yes even doctors and Ph.D like Jordan Peterson's going after the feminism movement. Now I don’t know what is going on at the college campus or what they are teaching in women studies these days but many conservatives and psychologist like Jordan Peterson's are speaking out about the feminism movement. So I have no idea what they are teaching in the schools in women studies or what the goal is but it seems many conservatives and psychologist are speaking out now. They do not elaborate on what they are doing or what they are teaching in schools other than saying they are e…

  6. One thing we know, more Americans died of COVID-19 than people of any other country. It's almost as though the COVID-19 virus was fitted with a American-genome-adhesive feature that particularly fancied Americans. No really, look at the trajectory COVID took after "It's origination in the Chinese area". It could have spread out like a breeze, or it could have spread towards the Asian areas, but it took a definite course towards the USA....think that ain't weird? Now, who would want Americans dead? Many people, and not just people from middle eastern countries. If you look down history, who have Americans messed with? The list is long. Vietnam, Iraq, and Japan,…

  7. In India, you are either rich or poor, either ugly or beautiful, either good or evil. In USA, you can be all the above. In India, there is segregation between castes/classes. For the very reason that Patel is poor and Rajiv is rich, Patel and Rajiv simply cannot mix. They cannot be allowed in the same playpen. If they are, then Poor Patel will steal from Rich Rajiv. In USA, both Tom and Harry are equally well off. Neither is extravagantly rich, nor poor. But they can mix. They can be friends. Rich Rajiv migrates to USA, and is forced to be friends with middle class Harry. He doesnt like it. Every instinct in Rich Rajiv bays 'no!' Rich Richard, the …

Even though Canada is over 80% ( 83 % for 1st dose ), apparently a lot of people still think vaccination is too much of an imposition on their rights and freedoms. At the current time, several thousand heavy trucks are converging on Parliament hill, in Ottawa, to protest vaccination mandates. The truck connection is the requirement for truckers crossing the border to make deliveries to be vaccinated, whether entering Canada, or the US. Apparently J Trudeau, our Prime Minister, didn't think it was enough to claim he had been exposed to someone who tested positive, and would be in isolation; he actually left the Capital for an unknown location, fearing a US style,…

  10. Found this article......Is this just doomsayer nonsense? Or is Trump behind all this? What I do understand as an outsider, is that the USA's enemies must be rubbing their hands in glee, at the prospect..... https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jan/09/is-the-us-really-heading-for-a-second-civil-war Is the US really heading for a second civil war? With the country polarised and Republicans embracing authoritarianism, some experts fear a Northern Ireland-style insurgency but others say armed conflict remains improbable Joe Biden had spent a year in the hope that America could go back to normal. But last Thursday, the first anniversary of…

  12. Perhaps a new "Cold War" would force American society to curb extreme individualism and a new "Space Race" would make society more supportive of science. There seems to be an effort to get the next generation excited to become astronauts.

  13. I'm curious how much you've automated your traffic systems wrt law enforcement because of this. I think one of the best ways to defund police departments and make them more efficient is to take speeding and running red lights off their plates by having radar-type traps and cameras that send you a picture of you violating traffic these traffic laws. If this is too far off-topic, I can start a different thread.

On the one hand you have states like Wisconsin, who send all underage teens to adult jail for almost all crimes, and on the other, you have the current situation in California. Hanna Tubbs, a 26 year old biological male ( who after being arrested identifies as female ), walked into a rest room and sexually assaulted a 10 year old girl, 8 years ago, when Tubbs was 17 years old. The LA county DA, has decided in his wisdom, that since Tubbs was a juvenile when he/she committed the crime, he/she will now serve his/her sentence in a juvenile correctional facility, with underage females, even though he/she is now 26 years old. Hannah Tubbs: Woman convicted of sexual…

  15. What do you think about the ideas of Jordan Peterson? More precisely the idea that history of human society is that of dialogue between conservatives and liberals and that if conservatives and liberals can agree on something, then it's likely a good thing to do. In other words too much conservatism is bad and too much liberalism is also bad

Does anyone think that people should understand the voting process for their individual county? It seems to me that in high school, in the 12th grade, just before voters are 18 years old and can vote, they should take a civics course that explains, among other things, the voting process in their own county. Maybe this already exists in high school, anyone know? I still don't know exactly what happens to my mail-in ballot after I drop it in the box. What security methods are used to ensure nothing funny happens with the ballots? What will happen when the handling of the ballots is controlled by a certain party?

  17. I now consider myself a "futurist". I am no longer afraid of GMOs and nuclear power! I agree with Robert Zubrin all the time! I would love to build a next generation nuclear power plant right next to them and watch them squeal. I wish California was mostly middle class people who believed in science and space exploration. I want humanity to dream again! I want humanity to aim for the stars again! The power of spaceflight and space exploration shouldn't be in the hands of a tiny few who are super wealthy! I wish the rich aspired to be more like astronauts rather than act like reality show stars. Ame…

  18. Note: I'm not sure if this thread belongs in Politics or as part of another existing thread It might be interesting to discuss the success stories vs the failures so far in the COVID-19 pandemic. My definition of "success" is based on the number of deaths compared to the number of confirmed cases. Success Stories: Japan Singapore Taiwan Hong Kong South Korea Not so Successful: Pretty much every other country. Factors of Success: 1. Widespread and systematic testing - testing is readily available on demand and the throughput for testing (amount of tests that can be completed per day) is significantly higher…

I have been reading about the omicron and cases going up very high in the UK and Europe and lock downs in some of those countries. So I wanted to see what the case count is in the US. And I’m shocked that none of the news web site even CNN or Fox news are posting the case count like they where before. It is almost like they want to keep people in the dark that there is title wave coming to not derail Christmas. Any of the other news web site post daily covid case count in their country but the US stop posting this now it seems leading up to Christmas.

  21. I was talking in another forum some argued they did not know what are failsafe that could trigger war and how to stop them ? 1: Economy of China if it ever plummets and the stock market goes into crisis because of China’s bad decision their leaders make of course they won’t right now. But indeed such things do happen reccesion happens and A turmoil happens in all the country. China is obligated to do martial law and replace the leaders. Food crisis follows and people can buy anything. In such conditions they will have to invade another small counrty, cut government budgets, and military will control. 2:Military Industrial Complex of China grows without sto…
