Pseudoscientific or speculatory threads belong here.

Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

  1. Started by owl,

This question has bugged me for a long time. Sunlight "pushes" against 'solar sails.' They call it "solar wind." Laser light "pushes" against the lasers which fire it. They call it laser recoil. Light trapped in a box of mirrors "pushes" against the inside of the box, giving it more static inertia as if it were added mass. Yet the classic thought-experimental spaceship traveling at a significant fraction of lightspeed can not "push" a light shining ahead any faster than its speed limit, 'c.' It seems that the ship must travel into the tail end of that light, absorbing the difference between its velocity and 'c.' And it seems that its momentum acts like…

"Speed of light". It's kind of an antiquated phrase. Sure it's mathmaticaly sound but I think the phrase causes a lot of confusion. To find the speed of somthing you figure how much distance was traveled in a certain amount of time. But with light distance and time become variables defined by the light between two unique reference points, usually an observer and a the light source. For me to conceptualize Einsteins theory of relativity I had to find a different plane of thought. So I started tinking that the ray of light that exists between my eye and say a star ten thousand light years away was actually a defined one dimensional thread of relativity. A ray of distan…

  5. Hello there, had some ideas the other day and made a video .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfrUxcCzfks I also have some other ideas about gravity but I will wait and see what response I get here. I have discussed this else where and got a very negative response. Please don't talk from your emotional perspective, I am only interested in the science.

Time has been presented by some as a measure of change. So the question goes like this: can change happen without time? That is not a question about simultaneity (can a change happen in zero time), that's another question. The question is: if you take an event A and say it changes into an event B, do we need time for the change to happen? For example, in mathematics, one can take an equation and make it evolve in a full page of equations following a sequence that can go forward and backward. Isn't it an example of change without time?

  7. I'm not a big fan of Richard Dawkins since he is a total atheist, and me a whimpering agnostic. But I must give kudos to knowledge that is not biased, and only making a statement. 22 minutes in length, but well worth the time to watch. Is it phiosophical rhetoric, or does it ring a sense of truth?

  8. Started by Reaper,

This thought actually came up to me when I was looking at some pictures of distant galaxies. What I was wondering is, given the incredible distances between galaxies, could it actually be possible to colonize other galaxies than our own? Even with Star Trek technology it could still take hundreds of thousands of years to actually reach another major galaxy. If wormholes, warp drive, etc. is possible then I could see intergalactic travel as feasible. But if FTL travel in any form isn't possible at all, then would it even possible to colonize other galaxies and spread all over the universe? For instance, colonization of the solar system shouldn't be that diff…

History anddescription of the problem Wikipedia: "In1932, Jan Hendrik Oort was the first to discover that the stars in thearms of a spiral galaxy (the Milky Way in thiscase) moved faster than expected when a mass distribution based upon the visible matter is assumed. "Although dark matter is the most popular theory to explain the various astronomical observations of galaxies and galaxy clusters, there has been no direct observational evidence of dark matter." So, how would Newton explain this Rotation curve of a typical spiral galaxy? Newton hadalready gave the answer:Wikipedia: "Object's orbit in the space is mainly influenced by the gravitational pull of ne…

John D. Boswell had an epic idea, but the universe installed it into him. I want to help him spread the Symphony of Science for the same he reason he invented it. I want the world to realize how important they are, and, more importantly, how to act upon that new found empowerment. This is a link to one of his videos, and the others are just as well done. http://www.youtube.c...ZGINaRUEkU&NR=1 The Scientific Revolution is among us... 1927 = 2.000.000.000 humans on the surface, 2012 = 7.000.000.000... the time is NOW!!!!

  12. Started by paradigm,

There is a new Physics Paradigm, a Paradigm of Types, which is presented in an essay titled "The Materialist and Infinite Universe beyond the Abstractionist Paradigm of Physics". It can be located by putting the title into a search engine on your computer. A central aspect of this new Paradigm is that all attraction, including that of gravity, is caused by the absorption of emission. Also, the nuclear fusion process which leads to the construction of stars and planets is seen as a product of the absorption of emission within the context of the increasing density of impacting emission. The Paradigm is both descriptive and predictive in terms of the possible types …

I apologize if this doesn't belong here, first time posting on this board (or most any for that matter). I enjoy reading books and articles about physics and quantum physics, and I often read the ones that leave the math out and explain the concepts. However, for this question I have, I think might need to ask those who know the math: What would happen to the commonly held laws of physics if we treated everything unobservable as nonexistant?

I would like to discuss numerology, which is the study of numbers in everyday life. You can assign a different number to every letter of the alphabet, so a=1, b=2, c=3, ... ,z=26. You could add up the number for each letter in a word, so the word 'rat' would be r=18, since it is the 18th letter of the alphabet, a=1, since it is the 1st letter of the alphabet, and t=20, since it is the 20th letter of the alphabet. 18+1+20=39, so 'rat' would equal 39. You could do the same for other words. A different numerology method would be to accept every prime number as good, and since every composite number is a product of factors of prime numbers, every composite number …

  15. Currently we know 4 dimensions (3 spatial X-Y-Z and 1 Temporary ) in our Universe. I wonder what are the requirements to be met by a new dimension to be considered as such. According to string theory or M theory, there are at least 10 or 11 dimensions in the universe. In this thread I would like to discuss which might be these new dimensions, but should first be clear what are the requirements to be a New Dimension. And also if this dimension is dependent or independent of the other dimensions.

Particle physicists don't take into account the existence of consciousness in universe. This is a flaw. I think consciousness has to be included in any mathematical model of origin of universe. I put forward the hypothesis that Singularity/Cosmic egg is not only infinitly hot, infinitly dense & infinitesimally small entity but it is also A conscious entity. What are your thoughts on this? 20. How plausible is the idea of human female pheromones (airborne or otherwise) mitigating the testosterone levels and/or testosterone action of the men they live with? I'm just paranoid living with four other females with only one brother and a male cat. Are they (the women) releasing some type of pheromone that inhibits testosterone levels and/or action which prevents me from realizing the full potential of masculinity coded for in my genotype. Thanks for entertaining my inquiries.

  21. x' is a variable. Specifically, Einstein is saying that there is a function x'(x, y, z, t), and it turns out that you can determine x, y, z, and t from x'(x, y, z, t), y, z, and t - so as tau is a function of x, y, z, and t, tau can be determined from x', y, z, and t.------ Swansont Ph.D Physics Please read the article of Albert Einstein 'On the Electrodynamics of Moving bodies' and discuss the discovery by Swansont which even Einstein did not know.

I may argue some corrections, simply because it helps me find out more about what I need to know and it works better in my system of "replacing" knowledge. I'm pretty sure it will all sound ridiculous but there we go. This crossed my mind a while ago and I've been thinking about it in my spare time since. The equations are extremely simple too! The way I see it, it explains quantum mechanics and general relativity, perhaps along with the Higgs field. It is simple but difficult to understand which is why I lo…

The Open Challenge has been circulated to most of the professors of the world universities and none of them has accepted the challenge. One Jeremy Dunning-Davies came forward with some objections and when he got fitting replies he retreated never to come back.
