  2. If you guys need help with the spam bots, I might be able to write a program for you. But to prevent it entirely is probably going to need user name detection of spammers which could accidentally ban innocent people.

Nearly every day I receive notifications that someone (Adannarib, eljbepuqejevu) has replied to the thread 'real beauty', a thread in which I participated. As far as I can tell though, no one has responded to that thread since 05-Jun-2013.

As a science forum stating to have rules I'm somewhat baffled in the utterly arbitrary way they are applied. Now rule number ten states that you are allowed to discuss non main stream issues in the speculation forum as long as you are on topic and adhere to logic as other rules state. Now first of all let me point out that there is such a thing as the science of justice. The rules of this go back a bit. On the other hand because moderators do it voluntarily it must remain fun for them as of course for all others on the forum. There is however a tension between wanting to portray a scientific posture on the one and having fun on the other. As the proud owner of…

  11. yes. Why can no admin administer the rules publicly as the police is doing this? They are afraid, but of what? Since the begin of civilizations “rules” are misused by people above us to suppress everybody who is different. One of the first physicist, Giordano Bruno, was burned alive, because he violated the rule “we are the middle of everything…” Galileo was forced to deny his findings. A unknown number of scientists is murdered, put in jails, in madhouses and their voices are silent. If not that much (mostly by wars) people with knowledge had been silenced we would today certainly at least 1000 years further. (The millions of casualties of the great plague in th…

Hello guys, how are you? I hope good... Well, I have a forum that's like this one but in portuguese and I would love to use LaTeX on it too, but, I found some problems installing and I would love if someone could help me out. "A working distribution of LaTeX. This kind of goes without saying – if you’re using Linux, look into the TeXlive distribution." - this one is on the host? I need to have it on my host? "You absolutely must have a copy of dvipng installed. This plugin will not work without it." - how do I install it? There is a simple way to use LaTeX on my forum? Best regards. Alexandre.

Hi guys, Sorry to complain, but this section requests comments, so here they are. I can't figure out how to use the quote function in the post editor panel, which converts participation from something fun in to something just not worth it. To put this in some context, I've been working online as a tech for almost 20 years, and have coded my own forum software from scratch. Point being, if I can't figure it out, others probably can't either. Also, the default font size of editor is set very low for we of older eyes, and thus I have to manually boost the fonts in editor (often more than once) just to see what I'm typing. This too should be considered bro…

I decided to use my vacation time to work on the logic tutorial, and I've encountered a problem. I tried to make a table, and it gave me the error My code was: \[\begin{tabular}{|1|c|r|} \hline \alpha&\beta&\{\alpha\supset\beta} \hline T&T&T T&F&F F&T&T F&F&T \hline \end{tabular}\] So, how does one make a table in the blog LaTeX?

  17. The Moderators have been discussing whether we should do more to help drive traffic and garner interest in our threads by more creative editing of thread titles. We're not talking about sensationalism or uber-hyped marketing ploys here, just changing some titles to hopefully make them clearer and more interesting. Many people gloss over the fact that the title of a thread can generate a great deal of interest or it can also act to deflect someone who might otherwise be a great participant in the conversation. We get a lot of titles that are vague and don't help generate the kind of interest we all want for our topics. "Pls Help" or some variation is often used when "W…

  18. Something has been bothering me for about the past two years, and it seems to be more of a problem as time progresses. The Homework Help board continues to get more jumbled. It's as if it's turning into a huge pre-med board where people are asking all kinds of questions. As this current BBS system offers a nice layout for making and showing that a particular main board has sub-boards, I am suggesting that the board be split into sub-boards. Here is my suggestion for sub-boards: 1) Math 2) Physics 3) Engineering and Computer Science 4) Chemistry 5) Biology

It was pointed out in a reported post that the ignore function does not seem to be working. I'm bringing it up here as a proxy (so there need not be any potential bruised feelings about someone being ignored and we avoid having an open report. Plus I get the bonus cheez nips for closing it. Cha-ching!)

I am blown away by the censorship in the forum. I have a message apologizing for a warning and an explanation from the mod that the action was taken without reading carefully. I think that just happened again, only instead of a warning the thread about Hitler and science, correcting a public broadcasting show last night, was closed. There could not be a worse offense to the very reason for our protected freedom of speech, than this kind of censorship. This kind of censorship is exactly what is raising alarm across the nation, in discussions shows, and has focused me on concerns about morality, social change and politics. The censorship is being done by those who do…

  21. Memo ( Comment ) Our colleague from Poland said something profound but he seems to have been shot out of the water , which I think is a shame, as he was proposing his ideas ( all be it a bit different , namely , multiply Quark nominal charge X 3 ) in the Section of the Forum set up for such discussions. Or at least Latterly he was. I really do think it would be kinder and more friendly , and even more productive , if there was a Physics forum set up in the main Physics Body to undertake meaningful discussion which allows for a little more flexibility of thought,( one that could flow a bit , by exploratory discussion ) without being immediately banished to the Specul…

I think that not only should there be just more experts in general, and not only of a wider variety, but with a much higher standard. I'm not doubting the knowledge of any specific individual, but as a passive observer in many topics, I think that there needs to be more of an effort to bring in more experts who have a Masters degree or higher in every field this site has, because so far I haven't seen an "astronomy" expert or a "psychology" expert, but also need to display a level of maturity such as that they never put in their personal opinion or emotions except in the philosophy, speculation or brain teaser, lounge and politics sections.

Hello, I've noticed that many old posts and topics of mine are gone. The ones before 2010 appear to be absent. Is Dave or any other admin working on this issue? So, I really think some code should be written in order to get that stuff back on this forum. For one, many of us have gone into talking about various scientists, articles, and other aspects of scientific enterprise. I am not sure how valuable much of the old data is. However, I do know that I have talked about various things, such as cryogenics in relation to biology, and looked for the information more than once for hours in order to present it and talk to people about it. I am really hoping this stu…

S the reputation seems to be some open ended interpretation that can be interpreted in any arbitrary way that someone wants, so what if instead there was a specific unit or meaning, and instead of just having it say "like a post", you have it say "it successfully answers your question". It can still be positive or negative because I suppose a comment may actually detract from the answer to the question in such a way that it creates a conflict outside of scientific argument. At least there would be some concise way to agree on what positive and negative means rather than just throwing around some arbitrary likes and dislikes. Just have some kind of concise unit that every…

Sometimes I know there was some topic I posted in but I don't remember where it was, I looked in my personal posts section in my profile but it's limited to a handful of recent posts. I think you should be able to view every post you've ever made or at least every post in the last week.
