I have Avast one computer and while browsing the forums, seemingly at random points I get an infection blocked message. E.g. while clicking on this the biochem link I get: link: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/14-biochemistry-and-molecular-biology/|{gzip} Infection: HTML:Script-inf Anyone else having these issues?

Several threads at once is okay, but don't let it hog "Recent Topics". Instead put an indicator beside the one displayed thread, perhaps a number, that redirects to the user's "Topics" page. I know so little that I use "Recent Topics" to be quick at the draw instead.

I've noticed a consistent trend of threads dragging for about 300-400 posts, then people start getting annoyed and mods start insisting for some substantive evidence. None is forthcoming, and then quickly follows some mardy exchanges, resulting in closure. Might it be a good idea for the mods to intervene much sooner, say 100 posts? I think this is more than ample to ascertain the direction and usefulness of a thread. I think the mods would not be out of order, if there is a consensus between them, to 'knock a thread on the head' because it's clearly pointless with no productive outcome. I like this forum because of it's relative freedom, but I do think a line needs …

I really don't know what went on 'behind the scenes'. And I've had run-ins with xyzt before, myself. But was a ban really necessary ? Would a suspension not have sufficed ? He was a very good resource on GR. Ang judging by the posts made today that 'MAY WIN A NOBEL PRIZE', maybe his attitude is justified sometimes.

The time of your last login informs you of whether anybody else has obtained your password, and possibly passwords to other more important accounts. Does SFN remember this information? Can we access it from our accounts?

If the math is actually approached right that is. That post was titled something like "Observed Accelerated Expansion the Result of Gravitational Entropy with Superclusters"; this fantastic topic of mine was removed by a moderator for having dared share an idea I had come up with myself. Well, I just found a physics article from 2006 where some physicsists it turns were saying the exact same thing (link here: http://phys.org/news77190620.html). Therefore, the concept can no longer be considered to be a wild and reckless idea of my own, as others proposed it first - rendering the reason for the thread's deletion as invalid (in case you are wondering, yes, that was…

Why are we forbidden from using this format? It seems to display fine. If you add an image url the preview is perfect - but when you press post it tells you that this format is not allowed in this community. Lots of the wiki stuff is done in SVG and might make it easier to post with full attribution if we could just copy across the already formatted BBcode for a diagram

<link removed by moderator> mhd stands for magnetohydrodynamics. which is a science per oxford definition of science. my thread has to do with science. your action borders on slandering me.which is illegal by british law. im requesting my thread be reopened. to not do so will result in reports to your isp and the international science boards. this post is being screen saved as evidence,if needed at a future date. sincerely ,the great and powerful robomont.

[math][A][/math] stays capital, but when I enter [.math][./math] (without periods obviously) it always turns into lowercase: [math][/math]

I was reading the 'Hazmat policy' sticker at Chemistry forums and one line really sounded weird: Was the second instance meant to say "UK"?

I get the impression polls are used to influence voter choices. Does the experience of moderating/administrating Sfn's reputation system generalise to what political strategists might get up to? (at all/ even a bit/ to what extent)? This is very much an experience question hence the subforum.

This really pisses me off. I can't even say thank you. Why is there a limit to "positive votes"? I'd like to know. Why don't you include "negative votes" and do away with the limit?

I still can't figure this forum business out. When I post a comment on this forum, it seems reasonable to me. However, more frequently than I'd like, my comments seem not only unreasonable to others but attract the attention of the moderators. For example, a comment I made yesterday got 4 thumbs down. The comments seemed fairly straightforward to me. I don't get it. So, how do I become the neutral guy and not the negative? Thanks

Too many People are reputed to have a Good Reputation which might need Validation as to who gave + Clicks to whom and what for ! Too many People are marked down and their Reputation smeared which might need Reevaluation and Validation as to who gave those Neg Clicks and for what ! Maybe Moderators and Admins and Experts should be in a different Category of Rating and should not give or take +/- Clicks if they are able to see the database [making everything Public may be better though there could be resentments / vindictiveness but may balance out] No member should be able to give Neg Click to any other more than one per day , three per month or Ten per year so…

Recently I asked for support from the mod/admin team over systematic application of negative rep by a specific member. Rather than provide that support I was issued a warning by the team. My offense: calling the member an opinionated twat in my final pm to that member before putting them on Ignore. I joined the forum in 2004 while recuperating from a stroke. Thirteen years later I leave. It has brought me an immense amount of satisfaction, until now, to participate in it. My thanks to all of you whom I have interacted with. I shall no doubt miss you.

As Science Forums is based in the UK, and in effect it is a 'members club' is it subject to the Equality Act 2010? "It is unlawful for a private club or other association to discriminate against, harass or victimise an existing or potential member or an associate." https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/85018/private-clubs.pdf The wording here reminds me of some complains by the quacks we see from time to time. Of course, being told you are in violation of the rules that you agreed to cannot be seen as victimisation. So what does the SFN legal department have to say about this?

Alas, then. You shouldn't be speculating without knowledge of the basics. No model, no thread. Can you please stop locking my threads swansont? I haven't provided them to answer your questions or demands. Have I some obligation to you to provide you with a finished product? I can't see how. Try allowing the person who has genuinely given my questions time and feedback enough respect that you allow room for him to answer my questions. You obviously can't interpret language that eludes you as anything but an attempt to impress you so I genuinely believe you are an obstruction to my progress. Your presumption that I don't have basic knowledge is prepostorous. I ha…

This is not whining on my part, I'm not banned or anything, but how is one awarded Reputation points, and specifically negative reputation points. Don't want to know a specific member, just curious about the process. I've garnered 5 negative rep points on one thread, mostly today. And to imatfaal's post above, the discussion involved global warming, I took an opposing view, some of my comments were admittedly snarky, but I never denied the reality of global warming. Some of the characterization of me were absolutely venomous, but I'm a big boy, I can take it. And on my last post, I actually cited real sources, proposed real, accepted solutions, and said that if anyone c…
