When someone changes their status or announces, please have a small box where we can insert our comments. The current way of answering status comments is too long-winded.

Exploring the new forum layout I took a glance at the "Online Users" function. I was a little surprised by the result. Thirty users and their activities were displayed, covering "Just Now", "One Minute Ago" and "Two Minutes Ago". Of these thirty users only two were members. Myself and String Junky. Of the Guests, one was registering, two were looking at particular threads, but the remainder were all viewing profiles of members. None of the member names were ones that I recognised. This just seemed an odd and unexpected distribution of users. I wondered if this was some bot scanning user profiles looking for contact information, or whatever. Any thoughts. Am I ju…

  4. I note I can now write a public message to another member. What does that look like and where does it appear please? Does this mean there are no longer any private messages? What about the little envelope icon. What sort of message is this?

I realise this is pretty meaningless but I do like the new cover photo option - it is accessed from the top right of one's profile screen and allows an uploaded photo to be used as the backdrop of your profile page. Mine is a panorama shot taken from Barf in the Lake District in the NE of England taken whilst walking there four or five years ago with my Brother and Sister-in-law This is what I mean http://www.scienceforums.net/profile/32514-imatfaal/ it is fairly inconsequential but a nice personalizing touch

  7. Do I really need to know what swansont is doing every minute of the day? Do I really need to know when some ratbag spammer joins the forum? Do I really need a list of the last 15 replies to a very active thread? I certainly don't want to know any of this. But what was needed and readily availble now takes me several screens to find and I still can't be sure that I have checked the threads I have an interest in.

Someone mentioned about removing all the guests in the online user list. Click the Online Users tab on top and then the Sort By button on the right, select Senior Members or whatever you want to see.

  9. I'm sorry I react on this but I don't get an answer via IGM... Why is this in speculation? I ask what is consciousness and give my opinion. I put (pure scientific) because I'm interested in the science, not things like 'universal consciousness'.

You really can't be serious that this is an upgrade for a science site. Where is the list of recent posts? Where is my list of subscribed threads? Why does the users online list umpteen 'guests'. Where are the superscript and subscript? Tex test [math]\frac{{dy}}{{dx}} = \int {\sqrt {{x^3} - 15{x^2} + 3x - 8} } dx[/math] Why does a popup keep poping up to say 'Do you want to receive notifications from scienceforums ?' when I have already said no 15 times? That is enough for now Edit Well edit works, that I suppose is good Mathml seems also to work (quickly) unlike some forums which is good. Ev…

Seems posts are not numbered any more. Or I could not see such. Could help for referencing as before. Also, from the previous board version, as I was caught in the transition posting : Are social networks still intruding or just not shown now ?

Looking over the past hour 7 trash threads started 1 real thread answer posted, but I have to scroll my screen to see it We had all hoped for heavier trash swatting with the new look, but it doesn't seem to have arrived yet.

  14. Any chance via this new forum software version of allowing users to edit a post within 1-3 minutes of initial submission without the "this post has been edited" label being applied? Frequently, I need to correct a single spelling error (or, more precisely, override an unwanted autocorrect that I missed while drafting) and would be cool if I could so without that post forever suggesting I've edited it (which I usually read as being related to content or overall presentation of the point). By keeping the time window allotted to do this low, we limit risk of folks unethically adjusting posts after others have responded. Clearly this is a nice to have and not a must…

Does anyone know how to unlock a topic? There must be some form of appeal process? In all fairness that is. In the section quantum physics under the topic "atomic orbitals" I believe that I was arbitrarily lock out.

Is there a forum or subforum for long-form discussions which ideally avoid the nutty people who can't write a proper sentence or paragraph? I ask, because if not, then it would make a great place to ask certain kinds of questions, and provide well reasoned answers rather than paragraph long quips.

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/Relativ/tdil.html#c4 See: Problems with variable mass. There are "problems with mass" m. Einstein said it is "not good" to use "relativistic mass".. (If it is not good, then it must be bad.) Is the cloth (of Swansont's physics) so whole? Einstein does NOT support (all) his own stuff. Is there a reason for that (lack of support)? He (=Einstein) did NOT say "difficulty (with mass)"; he said "problems" (!, i.e. plural) instead. Was he (=Einstein) hinting also at the problem we now call "dark(=unknown) matter"? (That's) Something just as difficult, with no (satisfactory) explaination. I.e. (T…

I have read somewhere that logic is not used in many places. When things make sense we claim them to be logical deductions(and we flatter ourselves for been like a Vulcan. Oh God. Please. A Spock needs to tell us we are still newbies.). My question is : Is there a difference between common sense and sense that appeals us? I think or rather expect to have put the question correctly.
