Sometimes after starting a reply with a quote I think better of what I want to say, so I just want the reply I’ve started to go away. Is there a simple way to do that? The only thing I have been able figure out is to close the app. Reopen it then select clear the text box after it gives me the option. Is there a way to cancel the reply post without leaving the forum?

Hello guys, So, a lot of my time is spent reading about history, studying it, writing about it, etc. And I mean a vast majority of my time. And while I know this is a science forum, I feel that if we can have a politics section, which arguably has less to do with science and politics then it does with pure politics at this moment, it wouldn't overly hurt us to have a history section. Would anyone else agree that having a section open about history would be good as well? I mean the same basic rules could apply. You have to have evidence, you have to list sources, you can't preach, etc. Just my personal suggestion and I'm curious what other's on this for…

Just wondering what the appropriate forum is for questions relating to laboratory gear and instrumentation? Glassware specifically. Didn't see anything...would the 'chemistry' forum be good? Thanks.

Okay the work 'box' is not quite accurate because a box has three dimensions while the mod notification 'boxes' have only two physical dimensions, plus the effect dimension. In this post I'm just trying to be helpful, not antagonistic. The effect of the BIG BOLD STARKLY AGGRESSIVE THREATENING EXCLAMATION MARK ARMED moderator notification boxes might be too intimidating and discouraging to discussion. Some mods will like that effect, as one mod told me mods are like police enforcing laws. I don't think that's a good comparison, as police deal with murderers and people committing other gruesome crimes too terrible to mention. The people here are not, hopefully…

Okay, we'll drop discussion on why Jordan didn't get the Nobel, but we need to clear some things up: BeeCee posted the inclusion on anti-Semiticsm directly as we discussed why Jordan did not get a Nobel. BeeCee made it LOOK like Jordan was anti-Semitic. That's one of the reasons I don't want to see his stuff .. look at how many posts took away from the topic, as you pointed out. BeeCee was not answering the points brought up in the articles supporting the Speculation, rather totally ignoring all articles, and went off about creating anti-matter or DE in the lab, and the anti-Semitism stuff, along with his insults of 'Nonsense' rather than discussing the Speculati…

Recently, an issue has been raised about this portion of the rule. Specifically, changing what others have written for the purpose of misquotation is equally unacceptable. What the rule means is you can't go in and change a quote, when using the quote function, to make it seem that a person said something they didn't. You highlight a passage and hit the quote button, or the hit quote at the bottom of the post. You can only edit to remove extraneous material — no changing of the words. It also applies, though less rigorously, to quotes where the information is typed in by hand. However, we are not going to cite someone for a violation if they make a typo, o…

Since I have been here there have been at least two major software version upgrades. One thing I have missed in all this time available on many other forums is the popup preview box, obtainable if you hover over the thread in the listings. But only in the category view, not in the new posts view So I have never seen it until today. Can this not be activated from other views and listings?

To the neggers: Can we stop with this indiscriminate negging just because he doesn't agree with you? It's not like he's being an arsehole.

Can someonetell me how this came about? How did this (legitimate as far as I know despite the name) member last vist on August 7, yet post twice today? I also noticed that the last member to be banned (yesterday) was lsited online again today. Since this latter type of event has occurred several times lately, are the two matters linked?

I have just put my thought down in this thread both about the orientation and size of posted pictures. Neither too large nor to small and the correct way up. greyscale also saves space. Could some instructions along these line be drafted so that we could point to them?

There is a disgraceful post containing full on gay pornography hanging for hours in the lounge section. I’ve reported the post few hours ago but apparently there arent any mods online to take it off. There are quite a few regulars online though, could we give an ability to hide posts to regulars like @Strange or @studiot or @iNowif they agree to it? There are quite a lot of hits to this site per hour and a hanging pornographic photo along posts containing extreme violence is not something we want this forum to be related to. Maybe we could do a vote who we would want to have an ability to hide posts at times when no mods are online? @hypervalent_iodine, @swansont, what do…

A thread I participated was closed due because I essentially shared legitimate science being done in a science forum. This site is ridiculous.

Just wondering why I can't edit my posts - the edit thingy just isn't there. I hadn't noticed a time limit and most recent post appeared immediately without the edit option. Also I got notified of 'react to post' but that display is absent on this comment. (could have been on the later one, which does have the display ... an up and a down to give zero, possibly?) Reloading pages doesn't bring these up. It's not that serious - but I had wanted to do minor edits.

Hi. Maybe you can help me. When I joined the forum I put the nickname quite and actually I want it to be quiet. Is there a possibility to change it? (apologize for dyslexia)

I found an old post saying that MathJax is enabled using the ∑ button in the Edit window. But this button doesn't seem to be there.

I'm a high school student and my school's Science Day is coming up soon. I'm in desperate need of interactive chemistry experiments that will attract students to come to my booth and not bore them. I was considering working with dry ice, since it was a hit last year, but unfortunately it's already been taken by another group. I considered liquid nitrogen experiments, but after a while I realised they were too dangerous and carried a big risk. I'm looking for something that my audience can participate in, something that a lot don't know about (that being said, reactions involving metals is out!). Something similar to the aspect of the dry ice experiments, whereby it'…

I hope this is the right place to post this, but where is imatfaal? I always enjoyed her comments. I wanted to get her opinion. I don't know her. She could be anyone, as this is an Internet forum. But I was wondering why she hasn't returned.

When folks come to speculate, they often receive quick replies from members pointing out obvious flaws, misinterpretations, and misunderstandings. No foul there, this is a very informal peer review, and we should expect anyone coming here to want such critique. Unfortunately, picking at this low-hanging fruit almost always gives the impression that an idea is being rejected "out-of-hand", wildly or thoughtlessly or as a knee-jerk reaction. I wanted to create a thread here in Comments to discuss how to better deal with this problem in our conversations, and hopefully the next time someone brings it up, we can point them here instead of rehashing it every time. Just as…

This is a science forum. I go to check what goes on in Computer Science, and it will say "Computer Help". Like what is that supposed to mean: there is discussion on how to write programs, or how to repair a desktop? Judging from the titles of contributions, that is actually pretty much it. No trace of science here. I am not a computer scientist, but I do happen to know what Computer Science is, in real life. namely CS is a mathematical theory which deals with measuring the theoretical efficiency of computation. For example, the prominent open questions are problems like NP=P? and whether natural numbers can be factorized in polynomial time. But there are many more le…

There's an instruction in a thread called "All about quotes" or something like that, saying to click an icon that supposedly appears right about the B in the markup row, but that icon doesn't seem to be there anymore. Is there a way to edit at the BBCode level?
