  2. I believe my co-renter has recently started poisoning/ drugging some of my food. After eating a few things such as my salad dressing which I didn’t have any reaction to just after buying it, now makes my heart pound my left arm pulse with my heart beat, weird feeling in my stomach, hard to concentrate and ends with pains, ringing and a headache. It starts about 20min. after eating and goes away in about 2 hours. I thought it was all in my head so I tried the salad dressing again, same symptoms. This also happens when I use my mustard.. If I had to speculate what it is, I would say: 1. old co-rente…

I was under the impression the N95 masks are the best, but recently I heard from someone (who tends to be knowledgeable about these things, but, of course, not beyond scrutiny) that the masks with the filters/valves on them are the best. Is there any science that settles the question of which type of mask provides the best protection? There's a table giving stats for various types of masks here, but I can't really make heads or tails of these metrics, maybe someone can explain. Flow rate? Inhalation and exhalation resistance? Is more or less better? etc. EDIT: I see now that both the N95 and the european FFP2 come in valve and valveless varities. Anyone know how…

Hi everyone. I'm currently pursuing a career in these areas since I find it fascinating and there seems to be a good degree of overlap between them. I'm almost positive I will like the work because I've been doing lab work as part of my education. What I'm curious to know is if any of you have any insights or suggestions you would like to give your younger self? Maybe a source of cheap trade magazines or online resources. Do any of you currently work in these fields? How do you feel about what you do? Thanks

Considering the recent proof of the relationship between dinosaurs and birds, would the extinction of dinosaurs was somehow linked to a possible bird flu disease that was wild spread in the pre-historic period? I have considered the following facts that may lead to the build of the above hypothesis: 1. The relationship between bird and dinosaurs that were linked directly or indirectly, which means DNAs that could have inherited genes that were capable to pass over any kind of pre-historic bird flu; 2. The sudden extinction of dinosaurs could may have caused by other possible factors, such as global warming or comet impact, however, the chance of having a comet…

My dad is 66 years old and very active and young. An hour before he goes to bed he takes three Benadryl tablets totalling 75mg. He has been doing this every night for at least five years because he said if he doesn't he can't get to sleep. With them, he sleeps soundly. I love him and I'm worried that long term usage might harm him.... Please let me know if I have to worry or not. Bettina

My mother has been going blind over the past two years due to problems associated with age and diabetes. She is completely blind in one eye, and within the past couple of weeks her vision sometimes drops to almost zero in the other eye. She now has regular hallucinations, usually of people, little girls in particular, as well as flowers and other things she is familiar with. Doesn't matter if her eyes are open or closed. The hallucinations of the little girls are particularly vivid. She can tell me what they are doing, what they are wearing, and they often come up and pat her on her hand. She cannot feel the hand patting or hear them; only the visual hallucinatio…

Hi dear readers! To improve blinds' stick, lasers and previously acoustic sensors seem an obvious choice, to detect and range objects and obstacles sooner. http://www.lac.u-psud.fr/teletact/publications/report_training.htm (among many) Though, the varied designs have not replaced the white stick. One reason could be that the acoustic signal that represents the distance competes with useful surrounding sounds and is difficult to use to make a mental image of the surroundings. It would also have to represent very fast variations: if the user scans 5m width in 1/4s, a 0.1m pole lasts for 5ms only, which is difficult to perceive through a pitch change - such a fast sweep is…

  21. Since Tuesday or Wednesday I've had this white spot on the inside of my cheek that looks like a flat blister. It feels like a sore taste bud, just on my cheek. At first I thought it was maybe because I accidentally bit my cheek or chewed on it in my sleep. Friday I decided to actually look at the area and noticed the white mark. Since then it's gotten a little bit bigger. It'll hurt if something rubs up against it look my tooth or my tongue or food but other then that I at all times feel a light sensation on my cheek just like you would with a sore taste bud on your cheek. I figure if it didn't get better by Tuesday that I'd go to emergency care but I just wanted to know …

Generally headaches and high blood pressure are thought of synonymously. But I am unable to search for the pathophysiological connection between them from the websites like Pubmed, WebMD etc. Is there any scientific proof that high blood pressure per se causes the headaches. I would like to go through the physiological process of such headaches that are caused by the blood pressure.

  24. Hello everybody. I have seen many people asking questions on this forum about the reason to why blood pressure drops as you get farther from the heart. But honestly, not a single answer satisfied me. My major is physiology, so it's quite funny that I still don't know this "trivial" detail. What is the physics behind the drop in blood pressure? Because I was not satisfied with any of the answers, such as, - Capillaries have smaller diameters (because diameter shouldn't make a difference locally: decreasing arteriolar diameter increases mean arterial pressure, not arteriolar pressure, because the blood in the arteries faces higher resistance ahead of it so the a…
