Philosophy and Religion Rules

Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.

Philosophy/religion forum rules:

  1. Never make it personal.
    1. Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
    2. Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
  2. Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
  3. Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.

Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.

These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

  2. When you look up the word evil in the dictionary you get morally wrong, bad, immoral, wicked, harmful, injurious, misfortune, suffering, unfortunate, disastrous, bad conduct or character, wicked or immoral, anything causing injury or harm, pain, profound immorality, sorrow, vice, bad, or distress so on. This can make communication problem with other English speaker a problem, because word is not define be it Philosophy problem or English language problem. Also each of these words like wrong, bad, immoral, wicked, misfortune so on can also be looked up of proper meaning. Or do these words meaning change with the sentence. A evil theft took candy from the store…

Models can be seen as edifices of the mind that attempt to predict how the world works. This is a very skilled task. Can it ever be farmed out to AI? Are there any low hanging fruit that could be imagined for such a task? Are there rudimentary models that could be given to an AI machine for it to play around with and potentially improve? Is the idea totally preposterous?

  4. Hi community, Since this is my first post here I will take a couple of sentences to introduce myself. I am a 3. semester marine biology student. Over my holidays I somehow managed to work as a consultant for an international organisation in a small country in South-east Asia. I worked on a marine turtle surveying project and helped to build capacity and awareness towards conservation in this country. Now coming back to New Zealand and going back to uni I am still working on the reports for the organisation I conducted fieldwork for. Due to listening to Alan Watts this morning (he is a philosopher I really like), I realised like so many times before that he …

This is a question, not actually a blog. Here it goes: If the brain creates consciousness, then it has to be a conscious object. If it is a conscious object then why should we have to improve the brain's mechanism by challenging it or else it would lose its intelligence; then the brain should be able to conserve its intelligence without letting the control of its conscious parts. We know that is not the case. The case is we have to improve the brain. We are conscious of ourselves. If that is the case, then who are we? What is our potential? I am looking forward for replies!!

In my opinion, the entire human race can be classified into animalistic ancestry breeds- everybody is an amphibian, a mammal, a reptile of a bird deep down. Thats where everybody evolved from; a subset of animal back in the past. I contend those traits and behaviours are still hard wired in a persons entity; so much so that you could probably even find neuronic patterns that fit their respective 'animal spirits' within.

Only when we recognise our own failings, do we understand similar frailties in others. My question, why, when we ALL understand ourselves and our failings very well, do we choose to judge others so harshly for having similar failings?

I observed that all of us has the innate commonality of emotions. I observed particularly for example, is our ability to feel comfortably when we listen a comfortable song, delightful feeling of seeing the beauty of nature and many more. If someone neglect it, he still feel it. What I really mean is that all of us has the common behavior but because of our intelligence, we question it.. Any response is very well invited to accumulate a fruitful discussion... Thank you....

  9. Do you believe animals have metacognition? Some studies shown that macaque monkeys and dolphins might have them. If so, does metacognition require the species to have a language not limited to sounds and gestures in able to identify or be aware of their thoughts and feelings? I am curious what are your opinions on this...

If we consider that we were only the result of naturalistic random processes of the interaction of inanimate particles, how come inanimate particles create intelligent minds like humans, even humans themselves have difficulty in creating robots or creating living organisms, how much more inanimate particles interacting with each other in a random manner? Or in further view, how can disorganization produce organization? Feedbacks are very much appreciated.. Thank you

Scientific materialists claim that the brain produces our experiences in the first place. They would claim that they have empirical evidence to support this idea. The idea is that since there is an experiencer in the brain, then stimulation of neurons in the brain can be experienced. Since you have information of an experiencer in the brain and since this information is wired to all other neurons in the brain, then that is what allows you to experience stimulation of those neurons. Therefore, since you have an experiencer in the brain, then that is what makes all the neurons in the brain no longer just physical stuff and what actually allows you to have experienc…

Once in a while, I like to explore other topics. So here is the 2 scenarios i thougth: Imagine that you found a tricky djinn and he grants you one wish, He will always grant your wish, but he will try to get the best of it. Example: You->"I wish for World Peace." And so djinn did: Wiped all other humans around the world. If there is only you, it cant be war. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// You are a lucky man and you found another djinn. This one is kind of nice and will grant you a wish. What wish would be the most complete? (Asking for more wishes wont work, neither asking to…

Are you rather a determinist or indeterminist? I am a determinist. I consider everything as cause and effect. An indeterministic effect has a cause, which makes the process deterministic. Determinism is the belief that events are caused by things that happened prior. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Determinism Indeterminism is the belief that events are not caused by things that happened prior. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indeterminism

I shouldn't be stricken by this, but it's seriously true. Now that I am in the position that I am in, and have earned it with years of experience in my field, I haven't come across a single person for years that couldn't build any valid propositions on top of my own. I invite anyone to try. I may start a new thread on how Psychic phenomena pertain to physical reality and see if anyone can outdo me.

Can terrorist attacks (or just terrorism) trigger our collective consciousness or is the medias (plural) brainwashing our thoughts with mental images about the violent nature of theses crimes? Is the term "terrorism" provoking a strong emotional response to awaken the "collective consciousness" ? How does the unity of consciousness reflect our collective mental states? Is this evidence of (quantum-like) brain-to-brain connectivity ?

  21. Having quested for ultimate bedrock. Namely , what is at the bottom of " EVERYTHING" .? One could make the statement , ..." Things are bound to ultimately get better " ... Well if I were designing anything , say a boat to go to sea . Because of the intrinsic nature of the sea , if you fall in , or sink into the sea , you usually die ! I would make sure , that in my design , above all else , there must be some means , like a water pump , to pump any ingress of water OUT . So things would get better , always , as living is better than drowning , always ! Hence , it would stand to reason , that however the universe came about , there must be by desig…

Does anyone know of any research looking into the matter of what average people (not scientists and philosophers, just average folk) think with regards to free will, whether they believe we have it or not. Especially if it tries to look into what their INTUITIONS are about it, as opposed to what they will say when you ask them to rationally think it through.

  25. We're all reluctant to trust a person who is dumb or carelessly incorrect, but what about a really, really smart person? You appear to have established communication with an omniscient mind or mind(s). Considering that it could liberate you to pursue your own ends or manipulate you to serve its own ends, should you listen to it? Do you even pay attention if it might only use you? What if you can't necessarily double-check what it's saying? What if it gets something wrong, on accident or on purpose? What if you aren't asking the questions, just receiving the information it chooses to provide? What if it is communicating with an unknown number of others, and might…
