Philosophy and Religion Rules

Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.

Philosophy/religion forum rules:

  1. Never make it personal.
    1. Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
    2. Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
  2. Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
  3. Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.

Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.

These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

Hi, seeing bombay which is now called mumbai all these years, i was bafflingly thinking. That how is it possible that post modern city like ruins are seen here in bombay churchgate and said to be constructed in 1855s and left in colonial rule of 1930s when british offices were leaving India. As if its a time travel seeing the modern world again...occupied by some other people who later came to take the stage. So what i was thinking as its written in history chronicals and books media...that later on world war one was staged and treaty of versailles were signed. So if we think otherwise and think that the world karma was re- writtened and re-enactments of som…

  2. Certain types. But not energy, as a category. There are now at least two current threads in which energy and other quantities are portrayed as 'properties' in somewhat off topic discussions. So the purpose of this thread is to draw these discussions together for proper consideration in one thread, without disrupting the originals. Swansont, yes you are correct we can't just add or remove any old type of 'energy' as this discussion is intended to show. Recognising that energy can be considered a 'category' goes a long way towards this. We can reduce the mass of something and release it as energy (fusion and fission, for ex…

  3. The fact that the universe is utterly inextricable from 'shape' (which cannot exist at all without 'constraint') directly indicates that it is absolutely dependent. In other words, the universe cannot occur without a 'Cause'. In this sense, the universe can be regarded as the 'Eternal Radiance' of Causeless Shapelessness itself. In truth, ALL 'things' and 'events' (including 'ourselves') are actually conceptually delineated, 'apparently discernable impermanent features' of this Radiance. Evidently, any given 'particular thing' (for example, a 'tree') exists in a state of constant change, which is to say that 'the tree' is in fact a 'process' rather than a '…

Is there a way to measure of accurately Intelligence beyond temporary societal definitions? I am of the opinion intelligence is an intangible which cannot be thoroughly measured due to the ever changing demands of Natural Selection. In societies over time different cognitive abilities are valued to greater or lesser degrees. There have been many people throughout history modern day Academics laud as genius who were burned at the stake as heretics or otherwise dismissed by society at large during their time. The definition of intelligence seems to have a floating conformity with whatever a given society values in real time. All cognitive traits are only useful moment …

Every human being have his or her own position in this planet. The position refers to what he or she holds or believes. It is in other words his or her worldview. Some are atheist, some are agnostics, some are theist and so on. Now I want to ask what are there grounds for holding such positions or beliefs. I myself as a Christian have grounds for holding my Christian worldview that is base on faith and reason.

What is the task of philosophy? Isn't it to discus scientific recognition's Natural applications and their validity in Reality? Be as clear and sort possible! Doesn't Science has the obligation/task/function to answer logic driven, philosophically raised questions from the area of expertise? Can science be dogmatic? 1/0 Can I request as an user scientific clarity? E.g: What is Space and How big is it approx? What is Nothing? What is Mathematics? What is the smallest entity I can count? What is time? What does the numbers do? How do we account them? 1*0... Can we express reality with mathematics? - Looks like Digitalisation has the potent…

  9. Little Johnny's Mother told him that it was bad to tell a lie -- that it was wrong. Little Sarah's Mother told her that it was bad to tell a lie -- that it was wrong. As they grew, Johnny and Sarah learned that sometimes it is good and right to tell a lie, because the truth could hurt people. These are called "little white lies". When they matured, they learned that some bad and wrong things can be good and right. Like killing people is bad, except when it isn't and you get a medal for it. Fighting is bad, except when you have to. And stealing from people is wrong and bad, except when you call it taxes, or maybe insurance, or maybe even stocks. So in my opi…

what is time? Hello, Sci-man here AKA, (TheDarkOverlord) I'm wondering what time is some say time is a real thing some say time is a concept but i think its a little of both. so if you could please answer this question. 'What is time and how do you think it began?'

  12. The result of pondering whether human life was purposeless or not, lead me to conceive an early hypothesis, somewhat detailed in some earlier threads: Why is the purpose of human life reasonably to create Artificial General Intelligence? Consciousness causes higher entropy compared to unconscious states in the human brain (Relates to thread above) However, given my hypothesis above, upon discussions, especially atheistic persons tend to confuse teleonomy (purpose in the realm of science/objectivity) for the teleological argument, which is a religious/subjective concept contrary to teleonomy; where my threads concern teleonomy.) Why aren't concep…

Philosophically an idea occurred to me, but not being of a religious nature am not overly keen on it. But "in the beginning god said let there be light". Now if we drop of the god bit and any connection to the old testament, and look at unfolded space in a singularity consisting of perhaps N? dimensions. Space and time do not exist at this singularity in space. For a particle or energy to exist it exists outside of space time ie dimensions and time do not exist. For a photon time does not exist and neither does space, it is only in our space time that it appears to be restricted to c and be given properties. Philosophically could it exist in an extra dimension and just ap…

I was also thinking what would happen if all life from in space did not exist what would happen to that space. i mean like a cardboard but is not empty, there are micro organisms and other Batista in the air If you have read this post please give me an incite on this subject is it a possibility that quantum world is like the transistor that we have in our computer , can quantum …

William Lane Craig has recently been accused of plagiarizing parts of his Masters thesis. The following two part video presents the evidence(the title is a bit misleading; it's a joke from the channel): It seems to me that it's fairly clear-cut that he in fact plagiarized these parts of his thesis. If he did plagiarize, what are the possible repercussions? Can his Masters degree be revoked? We have: "The achievements of this century and its predecessors in the modern period have made it possible for the majority of Western men to emancipate themselves from the numerous restrictions that afflicted men in past centuries."-Easton "The achievements…

I asked a professor for reading recommendations into the field of epistemology, and she recommended Keith Lehrers' "Theory of Knowledge". However, neither the public library system nor the college I attend has a copy of the book. I managed to stumble upon another book entitled "Epistemology: A contemporary introduction to the theory of knowledge" by Robert Audi, and I was wondering if the two are somewhat similar or if they talk about different subjects, and if so, what are they. Thanks in advance.

When you spend money what is it you are actually doing? In reality money is just a coupon which allows you to consume some energy. Without energy available your money is worth nothing. If you spend a load of money then somewhere a lot of energy has been consumed. The link is pretty clear to anyone who has ever worked in business and understands the concepts of 'conserved quantity', 'joule' and 'watt'. (Please note: If this message is to hard to refute then please just shut down all discussion.)

  21. I am not sure where to post this so have used Philosophy (of Science) to allow latitude in exploring this subject. I hope it will make a welcome change from the current Philosophy subject we have surely now done to surely death. Dimensional analysis is a very powerful technique in Science and is one of the things that distinguishes Science from Pure Mathematics, but to repeat the title, Is it necessary for all equations in Science to be dimensionally consistent?

What do you think of this statement? Many things in what people consider mainstream science are logic ideas not based on scientific evidence. Something that concerns science but is not based on scientific evidence is imo philosophy and not (yet)science.

Nothing is somewhat meaningless to think about because there is nothing to think about. Now I want to think about it together with you guys because it is in some way important to think about. I will draw two areas of discipline to diagnose about how they look on "nothing". First in philosophy, it is metaphysically valid that nothing produces nothing. It is obvious in our own intuition that what comes from nothing is always nothing. Nothing is in a sense "nonbeing", so nonbeing produces nonbeing in a logical manner. Now the second is in physics. I am shocked on how scientist like Krauss define nothing. I will paraphrase on what he said that "nothing" is something. How can …

One of the paradoxes of human nature is that while people crave and enjoy the novelty of the foreign, the alien, they would rather not live immersed in novelty. However interesting a strange culture is in the short term, in the long term, one’s own culture is a more predictable and understood environment, one comfortable enough to work, rest, and raise children in. When we encounter each other, given the context and nature of the encounter, we need a general understanding of the likely reactions, of the social conventions governing the encounter, and of the expectations which apply. We need this understanding to be like programming, fast…
