  1. Simple question, but why is the sky blue but we still get loads of white light coming through the atmosphere and we don't all appear blue. Moreover, if the sky is a brilliant blue and the sea reflects the colour, why is the sea sometimes green? All simple answers welcomed.

  3. Yes. Theories are interpretations of experimental/observational evidence. The experiment can't be wrong, but the interpretation can. That is why theories are never proven.

Now notice the fire above it. It isn't bright hot like that. And if that was an electrical fire wouldn't the sparks fizzle out immediately?

  5. Many people think that the terms human race and human species are interchangeable. I don't agree with that - aren't races subsets of species? Are races the same as strains? Saying that, how many human races are there and what are they called? Is caucasian a race? asian? african-american?

I am trying to make a ferrofluid display cell with 1oz plastic bottles and water. The water will not mix with the ferrofluid (its oil base) but when a strong magnet is brought close the ferrofluid flows to the edge and coats the plastic so when the ferrofluid is no longer there the plastic is still black. I have had some amount of success with mixing soap with the water but that still doesn’t last long. A thicker solution of soap and water also helps but that minimizes the length of the spikes. Any ideas? Edit: You can see a display cell at: https://www.teachersource.com/catalog/index.html You must do a search for "Ferrofluid Preform Display Cell" T…

  7. I would hope that this may be an appropriate Forum for consideration of a Cross-Disciplinary Theory. Having published a summary of my research into the Theory of a Human Response to Tectonic Stress there was very little response from the Geoscientific Community. This may be because work has only recently developed on the interactions between the lithosphere and the biosphere. This is not a 'pure' Geological theory and neither does it fit comfortably in the Humanities. Can I urge this Forum to consider the possibility that the effects of tectonic stress may influence human behaviour. A summary of my research can be found on the Geological Society of London's website a…

Say you're framing an hypothesis for an experiment. Should you phrase the hypothesis so that it's a positive statement even if you personally expect to see a negative result? For Example: "If I throw a lemur it will fly." I would expect for a lemur not to fly if I were to throw it, but should I phrase the hypothesis positively anyway for when it is to be tested?

  9. Freeman Dyson is the last of the greatest 20th century physicists, a colleague of Einstein and Feynman, Professor Emeritus of Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study, who wrote Imagined Worlds which has a chapter on ETHICS that documents the facts about why scientists have failed Humanity for over 50 years. Some of the more important quotes that characterize scientific culture are: The most historic warning of all is reserved for the UC National Labs, the worst case example of tenured welfare state scientific culture devoid of humanitarian motivation characterized by Dyson, is contained in President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 1961 Farewell Address to the Nation: It …

Why do dogs bark at things we cant see? I know most of you don't believe in invisible manifestations of deceased living things, so whats the explanation though. Really the reason i started this thread was to just ask about the dog thing (my dog was just barking at one when i took her outside to pee), but while i'm at it i'll ask some ghost questions. Of coarse theres plenty of discovery channel specials on electromagnetism found in haunted houses, and light orbs that only appear on special cameras and such--- what do you think about it? The dogs see something--- animals are the first to detect earthquakes and similar phenomenon (even before seismographs?), maybe its not g…

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - Mysteriously snuffed out candles, weird sensations and shivers down the spine may not be due to the presence of ghosts in haunted houses but to very low frequency sound that is inaudible to humans. http://asia.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=scienceNews&storyID=3401200

But what exactly does soap do to remove germs and bacteria and odors, etc. that plain water doesnt? Can somebody explain how soap works to me. Im a simple minded man haha. I know soap removes oils from your body/hands but how does it help remove germs and bacteria?

I've used a 'break barrel single action air rifle' type gun once before but never really thought about how they work. Now I am! Here is a link to what I mean: http://www.bbguns.co.uk/843_1_1054906.html Basically you break the barrel, put it back and the pressurised air is loaded. This is an air rifle (not spring) so what I want to know is how the break/unbreak action causes the gun to fill with pressurised air??? Also what is the opposite of breaking the rifle/barrel??? (unbreak the rifle?)

I was at the park, when a man from the water company drove in. He began using an orange instrument which looked like those metal detectors I've seen people using. It had a box with a meter on top, only instead of a flat pickup plate at the bottom, it didn't have anything. It just ended with a cap. My friend began talking with him and we found out he was looking for a metal cover that was buried. The instrument was beeping at different rates as he passed this "wand" over the ground but he became frustrated when he couldn't find it. As we watched, he got another instrument that was similar (but yellow) and looked more like a cane without a box on top. It didn't do any…

  20. what i wanted to tell is, scientific community should ask questions instead of defending evolution, such as why only biblical creationist should be taught in schools why not islamic or hindu? amerika is a secular country every theory then should be taught. such questions should be asked, by the way i am from india and we have no creationists here, not a single and in our schools we have evolution every year! and no one here challenges evolution, in our syllabus evolution is cumpolsary, if you dont read it you lose the marks :D well back to point this is what i got from http://www.icr.org/index.php?module=articles&action=view&ID=1842 ==========================…

Calculating the viscosity of a blended liquid consisting of two or more liquids having different viscosities is a three step procedure. The first step involves calculation of the Viscosity Blending Index (VBI) of each component of the blend using the following equation (known as a Refutas equation): (1) VBI = 14.534 × ln[ln(v + 0.8)] + 10.975 where v is the viscosity in centistokes and ln is the natural logarithm (Loge). The second step involves using this blending equation: (2) VBIBlend = [wA × VBIA] + [wB × VBIB] + ... + [wX × VBIX] where w is the weight fraction (i.e., % ÷ 100) of each component of the blend. In using the above blending equation, it…

Hello everybody and everyone! I'd like to share some thoughts about sound perception here. ========== First, does the phase of the harmonics matter in a periodic sound? This was a debated question when Hi-Fi was fashionable, and is still interesting. Here's a piece of software I made for more general purposes. It creates a file Tut.wav playable by Winamp, Windows' Sndrec32.exe, Media Player and probably more. The user defines a spectrum (hence of a periodic sound), the soft writes the sound in the file. TutD.zip I recommend to listen with headphones rather than PC loudspeakers that create misleading distortion even at low level. And this…

I always put a spoonful of honey on my breakfast porridge. (Granulated sugar tastes nicer, but honey is better for health, supposedly). The thing is, where does all the honey come from. I buy my honey in a jar, from a local supermarket, and its shelves always have masses of jars stacked on them. When you think of how many supermarkets there are in the world, and how many jars of honey they have on their shelves, how much honey does that represent - a million tons? Could that massive amount really all come from bees - wouldn't there have to be so many bees, to produce it, that there'd be huge bee-farms all over the place? But has anyone ever seen them? The …
