1. ## Did Issac Newton know about numeral systems?

5 in base ten. Always assume base ten until told otherwise or if it is obvious in context(dealing with base-16 hexadecimal codes with letters as numerals for example). This is only alongside numbers, but you would normally use subscript to identify the base being used(if it needs to be made obvious). The number indicating the base, should itself be in base ten to avoid confusion. ie. 5 in base ten = 510 An old joke goes that there are 10 kinds of people in this world, those that understand binary and those that don't. The joke being that 'one-zero' in binary or 102, actually means just two in base ten. You already understand counting in different bases, you just have to adjust your thought process slightly to see that. If I say 90 minutes from 3 AM, your brain will automatically add the two correctly and give you the correct time, without you even noticing it.

^This. For lower values, I'll also normally say the individual digits to make differentiating easier. ie. One(1), One-Zero(2), One-One(3), One-Zero-Zero(4), One-Zero-One(5) You assume base 10 unless otherwise indicated. For x^2 that '2' just indicates that you are multiplying it by itself that many times. x^2 = x multiplied by x twice = x raised to the power of 2 = x squared Time is a mixed base system based on the bases 12 and 60(12*5). Originally based on counting each of the 12 colored areas above and everytime you reach twelve lowering one finger of the other hand.

@curiousone You are still confusing powers and bases. The base only relates to how some value is being represented. Counting five of something Base 2: 1, 10, 11, 100, 101 Base 3: 1, 2, 10, 11, 12 Base 4: 1, 2, 3, 10, 11 Base 5: 1, 2, 3, 4, 10 Base 10: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
4. ## Did Issac Newton know about numeral systems?

We've used a variety of bases as a species historically. Base 20, base 8, base 12. Just depended how people wanted to count on their fingers and toes. Newton would have been familiar with the concept. Logarithms are used in the change-of-base formula. Not strictly necessary to figure it out though. You could always just count or work it out in your head. Computers do math the same as you and I might. Newton probably used an Abacus though(which more or less involve some of that converting themselves).
5. ## A robot wrote an article! I am scared. Are you?

A program producing original content based on existing content. AI Dungeon(on-the-fly adventure generator)is a good way to see this in action have fun with it. https://aidungeon.io/play-ai-dungeon/ Going to be real crazy as coherency improves and video becomes more practical.
6. ## When you reach light speed...

You need to explain better. It is impossible to reach lightspeed.
7. ## Why do scientist "think" they know everything??

Someone who liked base 10 more than base 8.
8. ## unfertilized chicken egg & male y

Parthenogenesis can occur, but to my knowledge it is still very atypical in chickens. Most would fail to develop. For some species however parthenogenesis is the only way they reproduce. Note that this is different from cloning where the existing genetic material is removed with new genetic material inserted. In your second case, likely only the code that eventually leads to the smell receptors is being modified. If some smell is repulsive to the offspring they will naturally flee.
9. ## Should administrations be allowed to tamper with their overseers

I'm thinking new faces alone would help reset UK's international relations, even if they are otherwise unremarkable. Hoping Boris ends up as their next sacrificial PM when things go sideways and Priti goes with. Imagine Boris vs anyone else asking for Biden's help on something like undoing the Scotch tariff, for example.
10. ## Should administrations be allowed to tamper with their overseers

She scares me worse than anyone else. She seriously wanted to send British warships into French ports to drop off unknown individuals. Hopefully she joins Boris and Trump on the train out of office in January.
11. ## air filtering questions

Yeah that sounds like it should work , noting you'd want to make sure the smoke from regenerating the activated carbon goes outside. Are there any laws that could be enforced regarding the burning of trash?
12. ## How Trump Could Steal The Election

Yeah, he's been kicking butt. Definitely what the country needs and the world wants to see right now.
13. ## Puerto Rico Statehood Referendum Vote

Would personally favor establishing a new official Microstate category(they can vote to become), still with representation, unless interested in joining with other Pacific Territories. D.C. would be similarly problematic as a State with its own unique issues.
14. ## ACV Acetobacter growth un UV conditions

Only thing is they have to use sugar to make cellulose. Has to be some kind of tradeoff going on.
15. ## Puerto Rico Statehood Referendum Vote

Think I've just lived too long seeing the problems territory status causes for everyone. With representation they could receive the effective investment they need and more broadly better recognition for Latin Americans in general. Whole of the Caribbean could be turned into a major growth region on our doorstep with only a smidge of effort. ...and yeah American Samoa is another one... I shake my head at the insanity of what amounts to decades long inaction.
16. ## Puerto Rico Statehood Referendum Vote

I remain hopeful Republicans might someday realize many Puerto Ricans are socially conservative. Would love if we could end up having no Territories in the whole country.
17. ## Puerto Rico Statehood Referendum Vote

Overshadowed by the election, but Puerto Rico voted to hold a Statehood Referendum. https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/524590-puerto-rico-votes-in-favor-of-us-statehood Ways to go naturally, but bit of additional positive news.
18. ## ACV Acetobacter growth un UV conditions

I don't know of any lighting used in industrial vinegar production. Might still make for some interesting experiments if you want to give it a shot.
19. ## Automated Toll System: Charging through Transponders and Handling Faulty Transponders

Correct and you are welcome.
20. ## Automated Toll System: Charging through Transponders and Handling Faulty Transponders

Normally they would detect the signal of the transponder or RFID and then do a lookup in the database and bill the correct person. The ones I know of have camera backup taking pictures of license plates. They can then compare plates to those already registered to see if the transponder has failed and then bill appropriately.
21. ## ACV Acetobacter growth un UV conditions

The mother is mostly cellulose and UV radiation seems to increase cellulose production. Wouldn't necessarily be good for the bacteria themselves though. From what I've read, companies normally increase oxygen availability to improve production rates.
22. ## Noisy metallic glass?

The piece I have was twenty dollars, but could probably find it cheaper buying in bulk and use less of it. Not sure what I can achieve in the way of temperatures, but I'll give that a try for a piece. I'd say brittle. Really noticeable where it has been cut or is tearing. Half wondering if it can be shattered.
23. ## Noisy metallic glass?

Hard to describe exactly but if you hold it in your hand and give it a quick shake, noise results. Was wondering if it might have some use as a noise maker. Made a quick video.
24. ## Supersonic sub (split from Speed limit on earth)

Be noisy if nothing else. Maybe if the water was kept away from the hull itself though you could avoid the worst of it. In theory if we forego keeping the interior at atmospheric pressure could streamline the hull. If crewed, atmospheric composition and depth changing would have to be taken into consideration though.
25. ## Noisy metallic glass?

Bought a strip off eBay. Trying to figure out if it being noisier than similar strips of metal is just my imagination or not. Any help or thoughts on the subject is appreciated.
