What is gravity? Most would say it is a force. I'm not a scientist, physicist or anything like that just a normal person with lots of questions to ask and this is one that I ask a lot. Gravity is the after affect that mass has on the fabric of space-time. This is what I think gravity is. The universe is on a 2 dimensional plane so mass creates gravity that then creates the 3Rd and 4th dimension space-time. So if there is mo mass is there no space-time? It's just a question I'm asking hope you all understand what I mean because I can't fully explain. It can be hard to put in writimg what your thinking so please tell me where I might be going wrong with my idea's and tha…

  2. There is a patent I filed last year, It implements solar sails. To ensure that we keep close to the sun and get most of its radiation pressure, we will use what I call a solar propeller but the name solar mill makes more sense. So lets call it a solar mill. This is a solar sail that instead of being pushed away by the sun's radiation pressure it actually keeps spinning about its axis. We all agree that we cannot keep on increasing the spin indefinitely because the solar sails will break apart at a certain centrifugal force. To prevent damage to our payload we shall keep it stationary using a gyroscope at the center of the system. A magnetic bearing can be used to reduce …

  3. Greetings, I was reading about this in a news article and was completely flabbergasted as to how a laser could be used to cool somethinf down instead of heating it up. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn’t light give off energy/is energy, producing heat to some degree? http://www.washington.edu/news/2015/11/16/uw-team-refrigerates-liquids-with-a-laser-for-the-first-time/ From what I gather, they aim the laser at a certain kind of crystal, which then reacts in a way which cools down which ever liquid it is in... I would just like to know, is it actually possible to user lasers without aiming at a particular crystal to directly cool down an object? If…

  4. Accelerated expansion, being exponential, would eventually reach relativistic speeds. This would not allow for accelerated expansion for a few reasons: - The exponential increase in relativistic mass would become increasingly substantial, causing the gravitational forces between objects to have a tremendous magnitude, working against accelerated expansion. - As an object approaches the speed of light, the force required to accelerate that object increases. The forces causing accelerated expansion, whatever they might be, would have less and less effect on an object's speed as it approaches the speed of light. - Time dilation would result in no net change in di…

Understanding that photons are considered not to have any mass, they do have velocity and as such I wonder if from the frame of reference of a photon (if a frame of reference can be identified) when it leaves its origin and arrives at its destination is it instantaneous for the photon regardless of the distance traveled? I wonder if anyone has pondered this question before? By the way, I am new here and hope this question is appropriate for this forum.

  7. So we have the discovery of gravitational waves confirmed. Does it mean that if we have sophisticated measuring stuff and highly advanced equipment we can perform unique accurate imaging of any object ( atom by atom in details ) by the signatures that any of its component parts rest in spacetime lattice in terms of gravitational wave ?

There is something I can't seem to understand. On one hand light is an electromagnetic wave, as in made up of electric and magnetic fields moving through space. On the second hand it is said to create the electric field, by quantum electrodynamics. Don't these 2 heavily contradict each other ?

Hello! I'm trying to think of a (relatively) simple way to explain this issue to someone. Don't worry, I'm not interested in "magic" talk about free will or anything of the sort, just a clarification of terms. Is it fear to break down the, completely hypothetical, "theory of everything" as so: 1. General Relativity is (seems to be?) determinate. 2. Quantum Mechanics is (seems to be?) indeterminate. The Uncertainty Principle means not only that we can't determine QM through observation, but that the system seems to be fundamentally indeterminate. 3. Einstein, to the end of his days, insisted that we're missing variables that would remove the apparent uncer…

  13. Started by Griffon,

I've been poking about on the internet again (as you do) and found a whole load of stuff by creationists about the problems with carbon 14 radiometric dating. Specifically they report (with some glee) that coal has been found to contain measurable amounts of carbon14 which it should not of course because it is about 300 million years old and dates from the carboniferous period. C14 has a half life of 5730 years and is only good to date objects to 50,000 years or so. Although I can find any number of references to this seemingly vital finding on the creationist sites, I can find almost no attempt to refute or explain this anomaly on serious science sites. This loo…

Does anyone else find it amazing that a single, ten gram bullet fired at a target on a shooting range delivers approximately 605.52 joules of energy to it's target? Do you find it amazing that a single gram of matter can convert into 299792458 joules of energy (given 100% conversion)? If you think so, or have more amazing Physics-Facts please do share below!

I have some questions regarding the graviton. Let's say it was discovered, would this be the end of general relativity's idea of gravity ? Or do they somehow work together ? With the discovery of the graviton, what exactly will happen with general relativity ? In graviton theory, how does sending particles back and forth cause objects to be attracted to one another and not the opposite, as in pushing each other away ? Is it something like quantum electro dynamics, where 2 charges can attract each other ? Even there in a well confirmed theory (or is it ?), still they don't have a solid explanation of the attraction. Is this just the weirdness of the universe ? Or is someth…

Moderator Note video removed - don't believe in the happenstance. I think you are posting to advertise the video and we don't allow that. Any future threads please try to come with a real question.

A group of violins playing unison the same note on an orchestra... The particular vibrating string emitting the sound cannot be perfectly synchronized from one instrument to another and another. Why there is no perception of tone nodes/antinodes constructive/destructive interference/interaction, but a smooth equal pleasant sound ? When the string is moving 'upwards' in instrument 1, the string in instrument 2 can be moving downwards. Plus any tiny-tiny deviation in tuning the instruments should create noticeable interference. Or the distance from the ear to one or another instrument... Reinforcement or cancellation is not perceived. It sounds just as a maje…

Hello potential illuminators. I like to have thought experiments every now and then, and when I had questions about gravity I couldn't find appeasing answers. SO I thought about it and here is what I came up with. /Bear with me/ The nonsensical answer, gravity is the cumulative struggle to maintain existence. boom. nah, that sucks. But seriously though. Gravity is the pressure caused by displacement of "space." Best way to visualize it for me is expanding a balloon under water, the water wants that space back. In this hypothesis space and time are together, spacetime, woo. Anyway, therefore the area around the object that has displaced spacetime has a higher density/c…

When I was 10 I watched a documentary about Albert Einstein's theory of relativity It was genius of course but way too complicated then to be in the clear light It was actually the most challenging Idea for me to swallow And it provoked my brain a hard time. After 5 years I worked out my own clear theory about Time at least to me! which is that : "time is an evolution factor" And my demonstration is simple: the tree grows as time pass by. Am sorry if I missexpressed every thing I didn't learn English academically unfortunately so please make your best to drive your self through. Have a good day

  22. It takes 94 k-cal of energy per mol of CO2 (about 44g) to separate the O2 from the carbon atom. Some work is being done on the Counter-Rotating-Ring Receiver Reactor Recuperator which is using solar power to make a fuel. I'm not interested in a useful by product, I just want to extract the O2 with sunlight and leave the carbon. Is there possibly a nanoprocess using thin film technology and solar panels? Consider that the high temperatures used for bubble jet printing was found by accident in the semiconductor industry.
