Since about 11 days Israel began bombing Gaza again after being pissed off by shelling of Israel by Hamas. So far the whole operation has resulted with at least 400 Palestinian dead with 48-72% of them being civilians. One Israeli civilian and at least 18 IDF soldiers were killed with 13 of them killed today. Here you can discuss the entire issue, just remember - keep it civil.

The last thirty years or so have seen the rise of corporate efficiency expertise. Wealthy firms that need to get even wealthier hired the best penny-pinchers around, and incrementally over the last few decades, the practices they've instituted have grown profits to record levels. But after these financial wizards removed the low-hanging fruit, they turned their sights on other ways to save. They started paying less and made it clear that the workers were lucky to have a job. Over time, we've seen a good deal of money that should have gone to the middle class get reallocated to the execs and shareholders, where tax loopholes and the best attorneys decrease the amount o…

G4S is a security firm that runs (covert) operations all over the world, it also has a private army of mercenaries. What im curious about is whether this, or other cloak and dagger type firms could be responsible for moving and shaping the world around us, such as catalysing a combined europe, inducing civil unrest in the middle etc... Sorry if this is a conspiracy post, in retrospect it seems like one, if so just delete it. Kind regards, Devilsolution.

Should there be serious penalty's for assault cases in school? Adults beating each other is assault UNLESS its in the name of self defense. However students are often allowed to be beaten with no real justice and are not allowed to defend either with these black and white rulings. Should we give children a right to defend themselves and actually punish children with actual penalty's for bullying? A few days off of school doesn't seem to be teaching anything.

From the Sec of Defense it appears that ISIS is an extraordinary new terrorist threat to the US. Their assets are in the Billions. What does it take to freeze their assets? That kind of funding may buy a nuke. ISIS would not hesitate to destroy all of New York City. They are now attracting extreme jihadis from all over the world. The best way I can figure to disable them and similar terrorist groups is by making them seem too dangerous to join. To infiltrate is a very dangerous job, you can get beheaded for doing it, but only true believers can do this important job. The good, true-believer, Muslims need to INFILTRATE the extremist groups. This will ta…

Today, downloading from an illegal source is illegal in the Netherlands. Up until today, downloading of material was tolerated, and was compensated to the producers (musicians, studios, etc) through a tax. The EU overruled this, and that created the current situation. Let's not discuss this change, and just accept it as a fact. For me, and all other people living in the Netherlands with internet acces (that's nearly everybody), this is a huge change. Starting today, I can break the law by clicking on the wrong thing. Now, obviously, like in every other country where it already was illegal, it is nearly impossible for the government to catch and punish people violating…

The cost of college has risen dramatically here. With large numbers of wealthy people moving to the city the cost of renting a house near enough to actually go to college has become too high for most lower income families. Also employers will not employ people without a degree.

In the biggest study of on the subject, it turns out that gay parents are great for children (better, in fact, than straight parents). Oh, and being a jerk to gay people is, unsurprisingly, bad for children. Will somebody think of the children?!

In schools when a students have good grade and doesn't have a lot of friends they complain they are not social enough. If you are too social and don't pay attention in class than they say you have to focus more and stop socializing. Children end up bullying each other since they don't know how to handle stress or puberty. We force them to work in teams but we don't assign a leader and expect them to just figure it out. There is also always the issue of one kid taking over all the work of the group and the rest of the group doing nothing. We also don't teach children how to interview or even do taxes or handle money. Of all the things they teach why is this never stressed …

Thousands flee the United States. According to the web site <edited out by mod>, each year thousands of Americans leave the U.S. for a new home aboard. According to the main contributors of the site, there are many reason for this, including economical issue such as wages continuing to decline. Also crime is on the rise. The cost of health care in the US is a big problem, too. Americans pay more for health care than any other country, yet America ranks only 38th in the world in terms of health care. Lastly, education in the U.S. is extremely expensive. And getting in to a college can be very difficult even if you can afford it. [Name] is a 30 year resident of the U.…

Just read this truly depressing article about yet another law-maker on influential committees (Healthcare, and Science & Technology) who is a firm advocate of the use of Astrology within Healthcare. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-28464009 It's not news - a bit of digging reveals that the cognoscenti have known of this loon for years but he has just come to my knowledge via the above article. http://www.dcscience.net/?p=6007

This event went appears to not have been noticed here while it's significant to world geopolitics. On 29th June 2014 Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS) declared the reestablishment of the Caliphate - a theological dictatorship uniting all Muslims worldwide. It's the first such attempt since 1924 when the Ottoman Empire ceased to exist, replaced by a secular republic. ISIS leader, Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, A.K.A Abu Dua A.K.A Ibrahim Awwad Ibrahim Al Badri Al Samarri was choosen as a caliph. He holds a Ph.D in Islamic jurisprudence from Baghdad University and has been a militant since the US-led invasion of Iraq. After a blitzkrieg in June/July his state now controls …

According to the BBC ten Iranian PhD science students have been told they will have to leave Norway due to international sanctions. Basically, the worry is that these students could gain the skills to help develop Iran's nuclear programme. BBC News. (Follow link below) The students and their supporters say that these claims are baseless and wrong. However, it has crossed my mind that the West should be banning more students from countries like Iran. Why help governments we do not like in trainning their scientists and engineers, especially is we are worried that they could develop nuclear weapons? The same should be said of chemical and biological w…

As of the past couple of years, I've been studying law. I'm not in law school, but I've been re-evaluation various aspects of law. There is the continual argument that ignorance is no excuse for the law on the premises that (1) the government puts out information for its people to understand and know the law and that (2) ignorance of the law would be willful (that is to say that people willingly seek out to know and understand the law. Allegedly, these two premises are supposed to enable people to be pro se, thus their own attorneys. However, in the face of the metaphysical argument that anything is "willfully" done, there exist determinist if but fatalistic arguments. Al…

It seems wrong for a corporation (I may partly own as stock) has more political power than I have, and is directed to use that power by a CEO, who probably does not share my needs, agendas, and beliefs.

Franz Ferdinand (18 December 1863 – 28 June 1914) was an Archduke of Austria-Este, Austro-Hungarian and Royal Prince of Hungary and of Bohemia, and from 1889 until his death, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne.[1] His assassination in Sarajevo precipitated Austria-Hungary's declaration of war against Serbia. This caused the Central Powers (including Germany and Austria-Hungary) and the Allies of World War I (countries allied with Serbia or Serbia's allies) to declare war on each other, starting World War I.[2][3][4]

Most of you know that Texas has a group of people running around in public with assault rifles. Texas also has a Stand Your Ground law. Now, what happens when a responsible gun owner reasonably confuses a nutjob with an assault rifle with a nutjob with an assault rifle and stands his or her ground?

A few months back there was a topic called Objective Global Warming. While I do not support the Global Warming claims. I do support the scientists that do want to make the world better. As such this topic is not here to debate whether Global Cooling is happening or not. Rather it is to see what ideas anyone has to help curve the ramifications of Global Cooling. Like global warming, cooling has just as many nasty effects for the world. I will name a few off hand! 1.Crops no longer grow in areas that were once fertile. This is undoubtedly the most horrific of things that will occur with a global cooling. This also leads to another disaster. 2. Famine, if crops no lo…

One of the powers of science is that everything is up for debate, and that's hard enough as is. Nationalisation can destroy this power whenever the people in charge feel like it, and then science would be nothing more then a religion.

Through its use of satire and the presentation of a concept in another context helps to illuminate some of the key problems facing healthcare in the US. Some of this has been improved slightly since the implementation of the ACA, but most of it still rings true. This video presents what the experience would be for an air traveler if booking your trip worked the same way as our "modern" healthcare in the US. The crazy part is that you don't have to strain to imagine how awful this would be. Is there any chance we get this fixed or improved in the current political climate? Other systems in other countries seem to do this all much better, but are the…

A nonexistence of the optimal voting system can be proven in many situations, I wanted to propose a general discussion about choosing the best voting systems for various purposes and countries. Especially regarding the most interesting - parliamentary election: there is a territory divided into districts in which people vote for local candidates (usually representing one of parties), and we want to find seat apportionment to fulfill two priorities: 1) The total number of seats of different parties is proportional to their total number of votes, 2) Locally there are chosen those having majority of votes. Unfortunately these two priorities exclude each other – there are usu…
