http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ridge/ This is, I believe, part of the stuff that Rick Santorum and the AccuWeather folks want to stop (see recent discussion on the politics board). This particular system integrates weather radar with "geospatial elements", i.e. terrain, highways, and political lines (county/state borders, etc). I'm not certain of this, and it doesn't say anything about it in the PDF that's linked on that page, but I believe the system also incorporates new passive RADAR technology that exploits the proliferation of digital television broadcast signals. Passive RADAR is nothing new, but digital signals are supposedly better at reflecting off weather (…

The one thing that annoys the heck out of me with my iPod is the fact that you can't pull songs from the iPod back to your hard drive. I just realized this. Now I've got to go hunt down some free software to do it for me. Any suggestions?

how many can you take to make you excessively numb to pain, but without ODing and losing consciosness? not on regular but say on some special ocasion when you need to be immune to pain? I guess illegal stuff would do the job better, but i'm to lazy to risk my butt trying to get drugs.

Post your character details here if you want to participate in the Flash Animation. Tell us some details about your character, but don't get too detailed. I am repeating this procedure here, because as Phi pointed out in the other game thread, some people were getting toooo detailed. S So, here is your final chance to participate in the animation!

It has come to my attention, that we do have a few animators here, but not all of them are very good artists. Thus, I feel that we need some artists to help us out. We need very simple characters to be drawn out and possibly coloured for us. We also need some backgrounds and other objects. We would appreciate all help that you give us. Your first job (for all those who are willing), is to start drawing basic sketches of the characters outlined in the "Characters" thread. Post the drawings here. Thankyou.

I have decided to post this in the GD forum, because while it touches on biomedical ethics, it also touches on many other areas, including politics, religion, medical procedures etc... I want a bit leeway for the discussion to explore things, from personal responses to professional opinions. A holistic thread. I may post in BM ethics some specific issues in which case I will link to them here. I also didn't want to further drag off the handwriting topic, and I felt this topic was worthy of it's own page. Nuff said. Dr Jayant Patel, is suspected of having been responsible for between 80 and 120 deaths at Bundaberg Base Hospital, due either to reckles…

Just curious if anybody here has any experience running a Tor server. It's kinda the latest thing in web browsing anonymizers, but it relies on a third-party server to launder your packets along the way to their destination (as I understand it). I'm thinking about setting one up but I don't know all the ins and outs of it. Thanks!

Hello. I just heard that some rocks can explode if you heat them up enough. I know that they are more likely to explode if they are porrous and water filled because the steam inside will burst open, but this is all I know. Has anyone ever experienced this, and should I try it, or is it too dangerous?

where can i get some good math/science t-shirts. i looked at thinkgeek.com, but they don't have too many options. at school, i saw a girl wearing a shirt that had a kid spray painting a sine curve on a brick wall and the caption said "gang sines." i am looking for shirts like that or Swanson's cartoons. or perhaps something simple, yet geeky like 2b\/~2b. i saw one on the net(warning, kinda inappropriate) that said [imath]\int{e^x}=f(u)^n[/imath]. i am looking for witty, math/science shirts. please help.

Hey people!! Whats up! I thought that a forum based on science should have room for imagination. After all, theories initially seem impossible till practical appiclitation proves otherwise. When Issac Asimov wrote Foundation, his books rocked the world as they went into the unknown streaches of the universe and that too based on solid scientific theories...after all he was a scientist himself. So i thought it would be a nice idea if we discussed our favorite Sci Fi books or stories... who knows we may even come up with an entirely new story. So come on guys get started and tell me about your favorite Sci Fi books. God Bless!!

I just bought a portable air conditioner from Frys to my house. I bought it for a little more than 400 dollars. The temperature of its can be only turned from 16 to 30. I turned it to 16, which is the coldest, but it deosn't let me feel as cold as the one from my car when I put my hands on the opening vent of my car, the air come out of it was colder than the one at my house. Does this happen to the air conditioners of all of yours? Or it is because that my air conditioner is not that good?

What do you guys recon to the idea of opening up a classroom here at SFN, in order to actually teach science? We've definately got enough collective knowledge. I was thinking if we make a new forum called 'classroom' or whatever, and all chip in and wright a few tutorials on basic areas of science, make a few threads linking to descent web based tutorials/other threads on this site, wright a few basic exams and learning exersizes and agree a few basic stock sylabuses etc. if someone wanted to learn a science, they could sighn-up and get in contact with one of us and explain which area of science they would like to learn, and we could hack and taylore a stock sy…

Few scientists fabricate results from scratch or flatly plagiarize the work of others, but a surprising number engage in troubling degrees of fact-bending or deceit, according to the first large-scale survey of scientific misbehavior. More than 5 percent of scientists answering a confidential questionnaire admitted to having tossed out data because the information contradicted their previous research or said they had circumvented some human research protections. Ten percent admitted they had inappropriately included their names or those of others as authors on published research reports. And more than 15 percent admitted they had changed a study's design or re…

PlanetMath and Wikipedia are good if you are looking for information of a single specific subject. I am looking for a website that is like those, but different. I am looking for a website where you can type in a subject, and an index shows up. The index would be like an outline for a class in the subject. Click on a link and you get a lesson. Does anyone know of a website like this? Your help would be appreciated.

If you've got an idea for a good science debate, let's hear it. I'd like to do another almost-mythical "featured debate".

The fire hasn't been on official news yet, but I'm close to the site. Has been burning since Thursday night. Has been listed at 10,000 acres all day, but has grown today. 200 firefighters are on scene. BLM Las Vegas is in charge. It is definetly the largest fire in the U.S. at this time. Here is what I have collected: http://desertblog.blogspot.com/ I have heard, but not confirmed, work has been called off at Yucca Mountain. Anyone hear anything?
