I've been in the process of tracking down a geneology of my family, because for the most part no one really knows where my family came from. Heres what I've learned so far: Back a long long time ago, my ancestors were Hungarians who immigrated to England, who later immigrated to Canada, who came down to the United States. My surname is anglicanized French, but my ancestors surnames were Slavic, so the surname seems to be a fairly recent (within 2 or 3 generations) origin. I havent discovered any notably famous people in my ancestory, nor any famous soldiers (lousy Canadians never fought for their freedom), nor any famous inventors. My sisters claim that are family…

Have you ever been in a crowded place and felt like you were the only person around? When I'm surrounded by people that I don't know, it sometimes feels like I'm looking at them from so far away. It almost seems like they aren't part of my world. It seems like they can't see me, and like they don't know I'm there. It's like they are part of a world that I'm not. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I always feel so disconnected from people that I don't know. When I'm in a restaurant, shopping mall, public park, or any other public place, I feel like I'm disconnected from everyone. When I'm in school, I feel disconnected from everyone except for the few people …

Does anybody know a good website for science documentaries that you can watch for free online? I stumbled across some good ones about string theory earlier on PBS.org, but are there others? Thankyou

Time to get a new mp3 player and I can't quite make my mind up. I will be going for the 30GB version of whichever. I think what I don't like about the iPod is that it doesn't support as many formats for films and doesn't support wma music either. People say it's easy to convert file types though. Also the iPod battery life is only 2hrs for films. So if I watched an episode of The OC then I'd already be on half battery. But then again I just do prefer iPods generally and I really love how thin the 30GB one is. Which one should I get? Any other points or helpful comments from anyone is welcome...

I believe it is unjust for people to pay money to read scholarly articles in a journal, such as Nature. Does anyone know of a website that gives detailed scientific articles that are in similarity to the ones presented in Nature? In other words, people publish articles and some of the articles go to Nature; I'm sure that these articles are somewhere in the Library of Congress, where people can access it; however, such a task is time consuming and oft comes with little result. Where else could a person go to obtain such articles freely? I'm looking for database, that does not require pay, with a collection of these publications; I'm sure one must exist. Mu…

When you could be so much more. A long time ago I came to realize our flaw is being human. We humans should focus on enhancing ourselves beyond what we are. The realm of science exist for that very reason but yet people rather be trapped in their pool of ignorance. I see no purpose for those that limit themselves and others. Not even God has the right to limit self aware beings.

Charles Darwin: None. But if it could be shown that the bulb entered the socket without a series of clockwise turns, my theory would absolutely break down. ACLU: None! We have separation of church and state in this country. Eugenie Scott: None. To say a Darwinist did it is not a scientific explanation. Panda’s Thumb: None. To say that light bulbs don’t screw themselves in is not a testable proposition. You can’t prove they don’t. That would be an argument from incredulity. You are committing a ‘Darwinist Of The Gaps’ fallacy. Carl Sagan: None. Time and chance are sufficient. Eventually it is inevitable that the bulb will be in the socket. Say, in a billion…

I have been here for some time now and I came across various kinds of user names, avatars and signatures. We have all kinds of threads for best posts, quotes etc. So,why not to have a thread for good user names, avatars and signatures?Whose user names, avatars and/or signatures you like most. Among all the ones that I have seen till now,I like insane_alien signatures ""special" relativity, stupid ideas seem smarter when they come at you really fast." User name...let me see...may be "Klaynos" and avatar of saske. Edit:forgot to mention"apart from your's" Thanks to peon for reminding me that things may not be so obvious. What about you?

Okay, so we have a thread to make yourself feel better than everyone else, so why not have a thread to make other users here at SFN feel better about themselves. This thread is also a way to say thank you to a member that did something for you, was kind to you, etc., in a different way. So here's what you do, make a post in this thread, and dedicate it to an SFN user. Make sure you say why you dedicated it to them also.

May the Lord of Lords smite them with the plagues of Egypt. May their chooks turn into emus and kick their dunny down. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits. May their hubcaps fill with prawn shells. May their beds be filled with rabid skunks. May a family of incontinent ferrets take residence in their underwear. May a host of bull elephants find them sexually attractive. May they be buried up to their necks in bat guano. May they be forced to travel by pogo stick on a pineapple farm. May a computer glitch place them upon every direct mailing list on the planet. May they attempt trampoline training in a cactus pat…

When relaxing on a Sunday afternoon my housemate insists on watching Time Team - which for those of you not in Britain, it's an archeological dig programme...where they go to different areas across Britain and have three days to dig and uncover stuff like an old Roman bath house, or a Saxon dwelling that sort of thing...yawn. So with a stroke of sheer brilliance I noticed a number of words that are guaranteed to be mentioned each week...trench, geo-phys and on occasion ditch. The game is simple, whenever you hear one of the Time Team utter the word trench or the term Geo-phys (I hate that term...it irritates the crap out of me for some reason) and ditch...have a…

Gas in the U.S. in the midwest is now $3.00 a gallon. This is slowly creeping up to minimum wage. A person working at minimum wage will now pay half of their earnings toward gasoline. The question has been stated, but is it really easy to pinpoint a hero? My interests are reasonably capitalistic and I'm wondering who to invest in. Does anyone know the company that many people are eyeballing? I'm sure In My Memory has some advice; although, I've never read much from her about this.

I was going through the store today being a thrifty shopper. I could have chose the Atkin's shakes I typically buy; however, I didn't want to buy those because I don't feel they should be recognized as an addition for the Atkin's nutritional approach. I had to find an alternative. I've always liked the idea of buying those StarKist Tuna Flavor Fresh Pouches; however, always found them too expensive for my liking. The Atkin's shakes were more expensive: $6.00 USD for four Atkin's and $5.56 for four tuna pouches. As I saw these prices on the shelf, I became aware to the fact that the tuna pouches were cheaper. Something that has been a question on my mind latel…
