Does status matter in a relationship? People say love is blind but I don’t think this is the case! Most people prefer a partner who is in the same standard or better than them. What is your view?

Has anyone ever thought about how much anger and hate there is in the world? Although it may appear peaceful where you live, watching the news will probably show you how much hate there is in the world. Just think about it. There are some poor counties that are jealous of wealthy nations. Some people in these poor countries become so jealous and angry that they feel the need to attack the innocent civilians in the wealthy nations. Of course, the solution of the wealthy nations is to bomb and attack the people of the poor nations. It seems like the only way countries respond to violence is with more violence. If people are killed, the only solution our leaders can f…

Not my most technical post, but I just had to share this lovely pic I just took/made. It's my young Nepenthes bicalcarata, a carnivorous plant from the lowland jungles of Borneo. The 'fangs' are actually nectar gands that overhang the pitcher of fluid; insects come for the nectar, fall in, drown, and are digested. This pitcher is less than 2 inches tall; adult plants can have pitchers over 10" tall. I did a bit of photomanip, which I think makes it look really kickass, but nothing major; the plant really does look like that. Mokele

Ok, first off, this is just a post for help. I just recieved a linksys wireless-g broadband router, 2.4 ghz, 802.11g. I got the router for my laptop so I could have internet in my room without the wires. The laptop is a dell E1505 and has wifi internet access built in and works at the same frequency as the router. I hooked it up yesterday, installed the software on the desktop, it works as a router, however my laptop is not detecting any wireless network. Any ideas? The SSID name is the same on all pieces of equipment, I'm on the same channel, so I have no idea. I'm at a loss. Thankyou in advance for any help you give me.

Hey guys, haven't been around in a while I know. Been busy, graduation a few weeks ago. Went to the Notre Dame particle accelerator two weeks ago. Sick for a week, now work. Hah, barely had time for the internet. That is if anyone remembers me. Anyways, while at N.D. I picked up a HUGE amount of books, now I have this collection of atleast 11 physics books I need to get through before I start college at the end of august. But I was thinking, am I going to be overprepared, if that's even possible? I mean, I'm going through a massive physics problem book that has everything from simple mechanics to black hole and radiation calculations. I'm getting that whole thin…

What are all of your favourite comfort foods? By comfort food I mean something which is easy to make, usually unhealthy, you can eat at anytime of the day, and never get bored of. For me it has to be... 1) Baked beans (hot or cold depending how lazy you feel) with pesto, cheese, a bit of vinegar, some cut up processed ham, and copious amounts of cajun spice. or... 2) Pitta bread with tomato puree, chopped up garlic, HP sauce and cheddar cheese, all put under the grill. or... 3)The humble noodles and ketchup

As per (someone's) suggestion, I thought I'd start a thread for all those who speak another language, in order for people to get practice in it / just converse / etc. So, have at it! Also, spricht jemand hier deutsch? Ich spreche ein bißchen deutsch, und ich verstehe ganz gut.

Im thinking about what to do for my PhD, and i'm pretty sure that i want to steer clear of the 'whats this?' science, and go in the direction of the 'how do we do this?' science. I love molecular genetics, and would like to play about with, and figure out, genetic manipulation techniques. for example, at some point someone would have had the problem of how to sequence genomes past 'poison genes', and so developed the technique of chromosome jumping. That's the kind of thing i'd like to do -- develop new techniques, improve existing techniques, etc. I also like studying HIV, and would like to have a retrovirus-based PhD (useful in vectors and whatnot), and would …

Hi all, I've always had a crappy phone, but lately I've decided that I need one with a bit more than simple calling and SMS features. I tried looking around on google and what not, but I have no idea what to search for at all. I would appreciate any help on the issue. Basically, I'm looking for a phone with basic calling, SMS, and internet access. The reason is, I'm not going to have much land-line based internet access over the next few years, and so I need a phone that can at least allow me to check my email and send out emails as well. Again, Thanks in advance for the help LazerFazer

I'm a big astronomy buff. I love to learn everything about space, and I understand that there is a magazine called Astronomy Magazine, where it gives me the latest news at Nasa, but I can't afford to pay for a subscription (I work at a fast food place, so I need to save all the money I can). Can anyone suggest a website that is free to join where I can get just as good coverage as Astronomy Magazine in the form of a newsletter delivered to my inbox? It really bites that I have to wait until I get a day off from work to watch Cosmic Block on the Science Channel to get my astronomy news. I would go to Nasa's website, but when I type in http://www.nasa.com/, it just take…

Currently being a grade 12 chem student of Alberta, I have just written part A of my chemistry diploma, the written portion, and will be writing the second part multiple choice in about an hour. I must express my gratitude towards this site. I don't post often, I mostly read, which has proved extremely useful and deserving. Now, one of the written questions I just answered was an opinion on the best way to produce hydrogen. They gave you three options to choose from, using propane, coal, and the electrolysis of water. Seeing all of those, I pretty much verbally vomited all the information I had read from here and researched into. So, I smoked that portion of t…

To your family or friends. For me it's Anime. I have a deep obsession with hand to hand combat (or hand weaponary) anime. I have a 8" DBZ figure at work, ssj 2 Gohan (if you know DBZ, if not I will explain or just google it) standing on my desk. Luckily no one has asked what it is. I was generally wondering since I find people interesting, what they keep hidden from most people, besides the sick and obvious ones

Does anybody here use Hotmail? You wouldn't believe how many messages are randomly deleted from Hotmail before arriving in my inbox. People who e-mail me on a regular basis will sometimes ask me if I received the e-mail they sent a few days ago, but I never received it. There are other times when e-mail will come into my inbox very slowly, sometimes over a day after it was originally sent. I have a form submission program on my web site that sends a message to my e-mail address whenever anyone fills out a form. I now have it send it to both my Hotmail e-mail address, and an e-mail address I setup with my web host. Usually, around 1 out of 10 messages do not arriv…

For months now I've been getting spammed by password notices in email that are telling me that someone ("probably me" it says) is trying to change my password. The email gives me a new password, and tells me that I can use it or keep using the old one. What do you guys think? Is someone trying to steal my user ID?

I tried a search on the forums and didn't find anything. So what kind of jobs are there? Just as a brainstorm. I'm not particularly looking at math applications in physics or geology, but more math-focused. Also, when you find discover something in math, what do you do?

So, apparently from the various sources (NY Times, Han's Deposition), it appears that some fairly serious crimes (assisting suicide, reckless endangerment - three felony counts) are being charged almost solely on the statements of the "perpetrator"- for those of you that are entirely unaware of the story, here's how the general understanding goes at the moment: 1. Victor Han, who was having an extramarital affair, drove to Bear Mountain with his wife and 2 children, ages 3 and 5. 2. Victor Han knew, and told the police a fact that nobody else seems to be aware of, that his wife was suicidal. 3. Victor's statements seem to indicate that he thought his wife was not …
