Why is my family so obsessed with my atheism? Every time I'm town, they ask "So, are you still an atheist?" and they sometimes even joke about me burning in Hell...TO MY FACE. Now, isn't that messed up? I mean they honestly believe I will be tortured forever, and they are laughing about it! I've been confronted about it 3 times already and I've only been in town since late Wednesday night. If I were to confront them every time I see them and ask them if they were still Christians, they would be SO insulted and probably chalk it up to persecution. If I were to joke about them being Christians, they would be even more insulted. Why can't they just leave me alone about it? W…

This is the thread where you tell us about how you came up with your username. Just out of curiosity, how did you come up with the username you use for this site? What is it based on, or what influenced you to make it up. For starters, my username is based, as you can plainly see, on a major defense contractor. I like to keep up with developments in aerospace and military tech, so I chose this username. I also contemplated on using the word "Mig" (As in the Russian class of fighter jets) as my username, but I ruled it out in favor of "Lockheed".

I found this chart long ago then lost it, but randomly stumbled upon it again. Yay Internet! Anyway, this is a breakdown of how America uses energy: It's pretty striking how much petroleum goes straight to automobiles and how much energy is wasted in general

... How does one get into a outstanding university if they were brainwashed the first 18 years of their life? And let's not even mention that they were a natural "late-bloomer". I would appreciate it immensely if you could read most of this post and offer your advice. I feel like I have no options left unto me. You see, I was sent to a Fundamentalist Christian private high school with roughly 45 students (one that taught me Creationism as an undisputed fact I might add) and I believe the experience seriously impeded my academic and intellectual growth. I attended this school for 6 years before entering college (this "high school" began in the 7th grade). My biolo…

Dawkins has a new television program out, called "The Enemies of Reason". He attacks new agers, charlatans, and other purveyors of pseudoscience: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8669488783707640763 (note: this is a legitimate Channel 4 release on Google Video. It has been uploaded by the original content creator and is therefore not pirated)

This time substituting the rampant speculation of the 9/11 Truth Movement with things like calculations, figures, data, and evidence. Surely these things have nothing over the immense believability of conjecture! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6987965.stm Yeah, looks like WTC1 & 2 were pretty weird buildings. There's nothing else like them in the world. Massive skyscrapers with load bearing walls, a design that hasn't been used by anyone since. Thanks to this, there was very little resistance to collapse: without an "egg crate" structure, the floors easily give way to immense force from above.

So, I'm going to University in a bit. I think I'll handle it okay. One of the hardest things to live without (besides money) I suspect will be my families cooking. I was wondering if any of you guys had any advice/resources/recipes that you'd like to share for fellow scientists-on-a-budget? So far I've found Student Recipes.com which is well, varied to say the least. I'm a little apprehensive about taking advice from a site where one of the contributors considers this to be a full meal. Also, since odds are I wont be able to afford locally farmed free range meat any longer, I welcome any advice on cooking vegetarian stuff.

My father is an addicted person. He lives only for his alcohol; he doesn’t have any goal in his life apart from drinking. Mum is worried for him coz sometimes he becomes violent when he drinks a lot. He refused bluntly to go to a counselor or even to take medication to be alcohol-free. He says that he is living a good life with his bottle. But me and my mother, we are able to do anything to make dad quit alcohol. I’ve heard of a medication called campral which I used in the treatment of alcoholism along with counseling. Dad will not be ready to go to a counselor. Do you think the medication will be effective if we put it in his food?? Can campral be taken in food?? Can an…

I am conducting an international online questionnaire that examines drug use (including alcohol), mood and different party environments in people from Australia and overseas. The questionnaire is open to anyone over 18 years of age, is completely confidential and anonymous (there is no way to trace anyone's answers back to them). Your participation would be greatly appreciated. This project is being completed as part of my undergraduate university degree so go easy on any negative comments you might have... until I graduate from NNPTC. I just have the final exams for my second half courses and the comprehensive examination left. I've been even more apathetic than ever, so my grades have been slipping. I am now down to a 3.58 GPA overall. I start NPTU in NY on the 1st of October.

[FONT="Garamond"]Well I would like to ask this question to all the people who live and study in the UK. You see,i am applying for an undergraduate chemistry course at the University of Oxford and ofcourse since I am from Pakistan, I will be considered an 'oversea' student. Now, have u lot looked at the fee structure for local 'home' students to that of an oversea 'international' student? The home fee is somewhere between 3000 to 3300 quids while for oversea students it is roughly 9000 pounds and that excludes living cost. Now do u ppl think this is fair. if u want to attract oversea students to come and study in the Uk would u not have a different policy. And if any1 here…

Has anyone read about this scandal? Not a "diehard" fan of the Patriots but I have always liked Brady and company. I really liked their "team" attitude and discipline - they emulated class and professionalism to me. This really tarnishes that image and makes me wonder how much of their previous success could be attributed to this video taping of defensive, and perhaps even offensive signals. I'd say at the very least, now that everybody's watching, the rest of this season could prove vindication or guilt.

Can you imagine wireless energy. I am a devoted follower of Tesla and his mad scientist approach to electricity. The man was absolutely a genius and his invention never came to light. Well, until august 17 2007 when a light bulb was remotely ,7 feet away, illuminated by witricity. Witricity is Wireless electricity and the distance though only 7 feet was successful.Time will see greater distances and advances in remote electricity. Tesla claimed to be able to remotely wirelessly light a field of lightbulbs 15 miles from the generator! How great a feat is that. The man was proven to be a genius by many of his theories come reality for instance alternating current. Thoug…
