Hey, are there more than 2 sexes? I recently talked to a person who told me that it has been scientifically proven that there are more than 2 sexes biologically and that the biological sex is a spectrum, so I wanted to ask if this is the truth? Btw: it was definitely about biological sex, not gender. My ideas: I know men have XY and women have XX chromosomes. I know there can be mutations in which humans can have XXY chromosomes, but is this called the another sex? especially when this person isnt fertile. And if you include all mutations of the sexgenes, would you get a Spectrum? If you were to ask me spontaneously what the definition of a sex is, I woul…

When people talk about homosexuals they say "They dont have a choice" "its genetic", i refuse to believe that, i dont think you can be born gay, but by the experiences people venture through that makes them gay. Also i dont believe in the gay gene because growing up, most of my friends and i didnt like girls till around 4th and 5th grade. i went through that "girls are icky" phase pretty much. Anyways i dont believe the gay gene exists and i do believe its a life choice, people have their free will to choose or not in my opinion, if the gay gene does exist then its a very confusing part of genetics. what do you guys think?

I dunno, if this post has been placed anywhere else on this website yet, as, as is clear from the fact that I am a "Lepton" (btw that is jks ppl!), I am very new to this site! The question I am putting forward is, do people agree that there is a gene that predisposes people / men to homosexuality? All thoughts welcome, I will post my own ideas, once other people start putting forward their respose! I did read an article about a theory that the supposed gene also allows women to have more children ... as if there were a gene, the question is: surely homosexuality should have died out by now?

  4. Wings on a human? i was thinking, we could graft wings on a human with enough commitment and research... i have accounted for all the weight loss needed, lung and muscle expansions(including the heart), the traebuclae (i think thats how you spell it) the neural mapping (connecting of nerves and waiting for the brain to map that limb), the energy requirements, skin engineered to be able to accept feathers, etc etc. but i need more info on what would be required as it would be extremly difficult to make an enzyme and a restriction enzyme to do all of this. it would take many years of perseverance and hardship, the personal ethics problem wouldn't help and it would requi…

  6. It’s safe to say that most people – not just the (wo)man in the street but also biologists – work on the assumption that genetics explains what we are, or at least our bodies. There is, of course, a nature-nurture debate concerning many of our mental functions. Clearly, genetics doesn’t explain which language we speak. And there’s a thing called epigenetics: the influence of our environment on how we develop. If you eat too much you get fat, work out in the gym and your muscles grow. But the fact that we’ve got two arms and two legs, a heart that beats, eyes that see – that’s all genetics, right? Wrong. To explain why, we’re going to have to go pretty deep, but I’ll do my…

What do you think of cloning? I have really been thinking about this since I read the synopsis to the new movie Godsend that is coming out with Robert DeNiro. A major part of the movie has to do with cloning a couple's child who is killed by a car and bringing him back. Any thoughts?? Moral, ethical or otherwise?

  9. Introduction: There is a recurring debate about homosexuality - whether it is an accepted biological genetic cause - or whether it is a "moral deviation" caused by the social environment. In this topic, I come to argue that, although homosexuality does have a genetic basis, it seems to be largely environmental NOTE: I do not believe that homosexuality is a "moral deviation" and it is far from that, but it seems to be largely influenced by the environment without a doubt. Genetic cause: Much like any other trait, homosexuality is a result of genes and the environment. One way to estimate the influence of biology is to use something called twin studi…

I was taking a break and went for a swim, this idea popped into my head. If you look at the DNA, in almost all cells, the DNA carrys a bunch of genes that have no apparent functionality, in its day to day life. These are often described as junk genes. The question I have is, why is the DNA such a pack rat? It is like the DNA's attic, basement and garage is full of junk it never uses in its day to day activities. The DNA is not a slob. He has all its junk neatly organized. But why does it keep all this junk. It would appear, life would be much easier if the DNA called Goodwill or the Salvation Army and had them come in and clean out the junk. The DNA would be leaner making…

People sometimes talk about the design in organisms, but when pressed say it is metaphorical. But is it? We use evolutionary algorithms to create some of our designs. Now people have much less hesitation to call said products design, because intelligent humans designed the algorithm's parameters and ran it on computers that are also the product of our intelligence. Evolution could be said to be a very narrow form of intelligence but with great capacity: it can only solve one problem. Some may instead call it "smart" rather than "intelligent". Sayeth wiki: Intelligence is an umbrella term used to describe a property of the mind that encompasses many related abi…

  14. Hello. I am a 19 yr male university student, coming from Central/Eastern Europe. I am not a stupid person, my intelligence is above average (I'd estimate it at about 105-110), my parents are both high school graduates (high school in Central Europe is tougher than in US/UK) , my mother has a master's degree (few people in communist Poland pursued higher education), my sister has a M.A in law and works in law enforcement. However I'm not an extremely smart person either. Since 7th grade (the subjects of physics and chemistry are introduced in 7th grade here) my strongest area of science was chemistry and I also liked it the most, then math, then physics. However, I have so…

Hello People. I found this nice forum by search engines. I wrote e little text to (try) explain non-expert people the reasons we age. I don't know if my point of view if correct, and so I would appreciate graduate student in genetics or biology take little time to read it and return here their comments about. I think there are more profound reasons for aging than most TV programs or books try to explain to us, this te reason I wrote the text. Text can be found at http://www.meucat.com/vi.html Thanks very much Miguel A. Velilla Mula - Curitiba (Brazil)

  16. I don’t remember the exact details of the “YouTube” story, but someone proposed this dilemma: You are in the side of a road and suddenly you see a old woman, age 50, and two children, age 5 and 10, caught in the middle of the road of intensive traffic and you realize that they are about to be killed. You have time to save just one of them. Who would you choose and why ? A lot of people answered that they would choose to save one of the children but they were incapable to explain why. Then a poster called “MysteriousMaskMan” posted a video explaining why most people would choose to save one of the children instead the old woman. He based his explanation on EVO…

  17. heard that engineered corn/soy now has been made so those plants/fruits produce their own "pesticides". Sounds like Star Trek. Can it be, people? Of course, this could start some histeria on us consuming these pesticides. In this Topic, I will argue that research on race, brain size and IQ constitutes a significant line of evidence that supports a genetic model of racial differences in IQ. But before we turn to that topic directly, we need to differentiate phrenology research from brain size research. Phrenology was largely concerned with predicting people's psychological traits using the bumps and curves of their skulls. Empirically, this has been shown to be invalid (1). In contrast, meta-analyzes consistently show that brain size is positively correlated with IQ. In addition, a 0.19 correlation between brain volume and fluid intelligence was found in a pre-recorded analy…

It is becoming more common for people, even scientist to say there are no human races, that we are all of the same race. I think even scientists can be ideological. I say there most definitely are separate races. This is an extremely controversial topic. I say the differences in the races are superficial, visual differences such as skin color, hair, eyes etc. PLEASE NO REPLIES that say there are any more differences between the races besides these superficial differences. This thread will probably be closed by one person making one remark that offends a moderator. Please think before posting. In the past some people have said races have more than visual differen…

  22. Racial intelligence is like any other human trait, which is a complex interaction between a person's genetic makeup AND the environment in which a person is socialized. Consequently, those who argue that racial intelligence has no biological component are extremely likely to be mistaken. Although psychometric testing is neither a reliable nor accurate measure of intelligence, it doesn't imply that we cannot, and should not look to other sources as a barometer and indicator of racial intelligence. For instance, Africa has no historical or indigenous civilization to boast, except for the civilizing influence of the Arabs, Persians, and Europeans; as indeed, withou…

  23. This question has been on my mind for years, and it's driving me nearly insane. Even if I get the answer, like, "Oh, it's just probability," I still would like a more in depth answer--how? For example, my family has some neighbors named Family A. In family A, the mother is alright-looking, while the father isn't that great looking, but he's a smart guy. The first son of theirs is fairly good-looking, but probably has Asperger's, got a perfect score on the SAT, etc. (He's the only on that actually looks like his parents). The first daughter looks like a downright model, with blonde hair and perfect skin. The second son just blows my mind. He is well over 6'4", Adonis-li…
