Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

Jesus was half dead on the cross, his blood ebbing out, gasping his last, but then... the storm hit. The wind and the waves where whipped up and just before the Lor' cried out with a loud voice, tis finished, a storm brew forth. It had lightning in it. And that lightning had electricity. The electricity in that lightning entered through the nails in the saviours hands and went into his nervous system. His nervous system, possessed by this new electric energy, exactly like human nervous system electricity but artificial, was spurned back to life. The deadish brain of the saviour was from then on possessed by the artificial electricity that pervades the atmospher…

As somebody with a scientific background, the Bible fascinates me because it contains the full range of all kinds of paranormal phenomena and close encounters with offworld beings etc. For example- “There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” (Genesis 6:4) And we could speculate that modern truthseekers are descended from that ancient bloodline, not afraid to stand tall among the masses..:)-

Reincarnation believes that everything reincarnates, i.e people die and are reborn. According to science, everytime a universe collapses, after trillions of years (the big shrink) it expands again (the big raise) Well, universes are made up of people, places, etc. So if a universe 'reincarnates', expands and dies and then expands again, then obviously, so do the people who make up that universe. In other words, people do reincarnate, according to science.

What is with the religious symbols of the link of the Babylon and statue of liberty? Why are some people saying the statue of liberty is symbolism of Babylon? Saying the fall of Babylon is saying it is going to be like this in New York city? Saying Babylon fell because of sin and vice. Babylon the Great, the Most Wicked City in the World. https://www.tldm.org/news19/mysterybabylontobedestroyedinonehour.htm And saying the statue of liberty is some kind of symbolism of Goddess?

I was watching a lecture series on science and religion. The instructor mentioned the Conflict Model. In this model religion and science are in conflict. Evolution vs Creationism. Observation vs. History. But the instructor said these polar opposites were once part of the same reasoning. Before the 19th Century, science and religion were often related. I don’t care what you believe. I am a person and have my own views. I just think people are being influenced a bad way. Instead of respecting each other and different views, we are trying to impose our views on others. Not that that is always wrong, but look at the government. Democrats can agree wit…

According to Bereshit, there was a word right at the start. Nobody knows what word, but it was a Hebrew word. Then came light, and then water. So it would appear that water came first. But on closer inspection, the Earth was already there, under the water, and the water was then gathered together, leaving dry land and seas. So the Earth was there all the time, under the ocean, so which came first isn't clear.

The Psychometric Measurement of God George E Hammond, MS Physics May 14, 2021 ( From my website at: url deleted) Egyptians, Greeks. Romans had gods but few understood. Cicero confessed in 45 BC in De Natura Deorem; “I don’t know if the gods are invisible or real, or where they are or what they do.”. It is only today, at this hour, that we have discovered scientific proof that the “gods” were actually “personality types”! In fact, the immanent discovery of the Structural Model of Personality tells us there were exacty13 real gods. Psychology trail…

When I stopped believing in Christianity, I just stopped accepting that Jesus was a god. I never questioned whether he ever actually existed. But since then, I’m looked at the evidence for a real human that the gospels are based on, and it’s actually somewhere between very weak, and zero. Most people accept that there “must have been” a person that the gospel stories are based on, otherwise “why were they written?” But that’s looking at it from a 21st century point of view. Back in the first century, gospel writing was the youtube of the day. There were loads of gospels written, all wildly different. It was a far more religious/superstitious time, when there wa…

What are gifts G-d gave to the women. 1. Gift the one of birth, the power of creation man does not have it only women have it. A gift only women have and authority it is never meant to have pains and suffer to give birth. But original before the devil interfered we were never meant to suffer. Genesis 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.” Psalm 127:3 Behold, children are a gift of the Lord,The fruit of the womb is a reward. 2. G-d said he will give powers of visions and dreams. There women…

Hi everyone, this thought and always point came into a few discussions I've been with some friend groups and church discussions. But I was wondering what everyone's opinion would be on our expectations vs how Jesus would come. This came up because one person made it known how the Jewish people could not recognise based on their own expectation of how the Messiah would appear and was wondering what if today we might be having that mentality as Christians. Just wondering, what anyone can comment on the topic and also if you can how can discern how Jesus will come again. Thank you and hope we can keep the responses constructive without any hate but logical and proper ac…

We have freewill God lets us decide to do good or bad and our purpose in life is when we make that decision. it's easy to not know that purpose because we are different. But freewill God gives it but he also gives us the law and the law is not wrong and niether is freewill just soceity itself is wrong and we have forgotten what is the normal back in those days. Society mistakes and thinks G-d is against freewill but gave freewill the right to choose and they have invented freewill is voting, paying taxes, and civics duties. No people those things are the mistake modern society makes because they think they have evolved in such A way they surpass all of Israel back in…

Hello guys, So it turns out that the definition of atheism as "lack of belief in god(s)" is almost non existent in the field of philosophy itself. In almost all the encyclopedia & dictionaries of philosophy and amongst philosophers and in academia the standard definition of atheism is " the belief/view that there is no god(s)" or put in another way "The proposition that God(s) do not exist." You can check Stanford encyclopedia of philosophy( one of the most cited encyclopedia of philosophy) Routledge encyclopedia of philosophy Internet encyclopedia of philosophy Encyclopedia Britannica some commercial url The oxford companion to …

Synopsis: Earth is covered in water, then a rouge interstellar dust cloud covers the surface. Because of Earth's faster rotational rate, centrifugal force keeps this dust layer floating above the water. Earth's water at this time is comprised of a higher percentage of 'heavy water' (D2O). The water's higher density works in conjunction with the centrifugal force to maintain the supercontinent, Pangea. As Earth's rotation slows, finally a point is reached where gravity overcomes the floating supercontinent. The supercontinent fractures, beginning its fall. Fissures break open expelling water from the deep, launching it up to the stratosphere and producing a flood tha…

An interesting finding, adding to other existing work that had already similarly pointed in this direction. Perhaps some of us truly are just "wired" differently. What do you think? https://neurosciencenews.com/spirituality-brain-neurotheology-18845/

According to the Copenhagen interpretation a quantum system remains in superposition until it is observed. If God was omnipotent he would be all knowing, implying that he observes all. However since the cat's state remains in superposition we can infer that it has not been observed, and therefore God is has no knowledge of the cat's state. That contradicts the initial assumption that God is omnipotent, but if God is not Omnipotent then he is not God at all, and therefore God does not exist.

Why do I do science? I just replied to a tweet on Twitter with the following tweet: Science and money both solve problems. But both cause new problems. Like winning a 100 million then going bankrupt or building a bomb and causing arms race. Blatant example where science doesn’t solve anything. Don’t get me wrong I have loved science all my life. But what is its underlying meaning or goal? Fix one problem; five new ones. Ones that don’t exist before the science. I ask before if a utopian world could exist through science but I couldn’t define utopian. But those who answered said they did science to improve the World. I like that answer, but when tweetin…

For some context, I regard myself as a Hindu of Chinese descent. I revere the Sanskrit language as one of the most purest forms of human communications throughout the history of the world. To claim that the Caucasoid had invented such a divinity is a paradox in itself. The inherently acidic and impure nature of the Caucasoid of Europe has a cause that is hard to pin down; whether it is due to the harsh, bitter climate from which they first started and have always stayed in, or their pride due to the fabricated history made by the white man, perpetually highlighting pretentious depictions in every form which portrays an image which is the exact opposite of what he rea…

So basically you want us to all lie to each other... to be insincere, inauthentic, and to mask our true thoughts because we can't handle the fact that some truths hurt peoples feelings? Yeah... Good luck with that. http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/02/universal-morality/ We should not feel constrained to assert what we think is an objective truth — that such behavior is wrong — for fear that it will be taken as subjective meddling or demagoguery, Harris argued. There is a moral imperative not to hold one’s tongue but rather to speak out. “Who are we not to say [that it’s wrong]?” he asked. “Who are we to pretend that we know so little about human well be…

Since I was raised by devout Christian parents and attended Christian grammar and high school, I feel I can be critical of my own religious experience. I have an observation about the basis of Christianity, and maybe a look at religion in general. I took my religion seriously throughout grammar school, but by high school I was becoming skeptical. Why did God or Jesus never talk to me in my dreams? I had many extraordinary, even surreal dreams but never, never, not once did Jesus telling me to go to mass, or God tell me what the true religion is. I think this is the basic story, the basis of Christianity. Correct me where I go wrong: Adam and Eve committed…

Hope this topic is okay. It's socially accepted to believe in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism, Native American religions, etc, etc. There are obvious logical flaws and fallacies with many, if not all, of these religions. Yet, it's not socially acceptable to point those out and criticize them in a widespread way. Maybe it's more okay on a science forum like this, but if a prominent figure in media or a politician did, they would face serious blowback. Even most scientists (Dawkins aside) I don't think would readily jump on pointing out the logical inconsistencies. They would likely be accused of discrimination. But there are some beliefs …
