Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

Why I detest fundamentalist exclusive religious dogma or any exclusive cultist belief Note! not all religions are exclusive or judgmental I detest the cultic or religious organization who have a judgmental belief and unspeakably gall to suggest that unless, joined them for life adhered totally to their belief and lived exactly in the ways demanded by them , followed their teaching to the letter all the days of your life. God was going to burn you in unspeakable everlasting eternal punishment in hell. If this understanding of theirs were correct it makes god out to be the worst kind of psychopath, punishing fallible a person, for a finite transgression, with the …

....the bible states time & again we can only truly know God by His revealing Himself to us. That being the case, is there any sense in discussions of belief in a Creator or the alternative of nothing + lots of time ='s everything. If not Supernaturally drawn to Him one won't see that science does nothing but prove His existence or the other side of the coin, there is no need of breaking away from the popular stream of conscience as chance is the queen of science with no room for the chance of a Creator. What do you think?

As a Christian, I want to ask those who don't believe in God, why they don't believe, what encourages or pushes them to not believe? What is the exact reason why they don;t believe? Are their reasons completely enough to firmly hold their positions? Before holding their position, did they think first? Did they balance things first? Are they able to check their own selves or hear their own inner selves before deciding to hold their postions? I am curious about this.... Feedbacks are very much appreciated. Thank You...

Homo sapiens sapiens - A genetically created, biological procreating, environmentally nurtured humanoid The Origins of Homo sapiens sapiens, otherwise known as humanoids or humans, has been a controversial subject for eons and eons. Or to be more exact, ever since any particular isolated group of humans became sufficiently nurtured by their environment to begin questioning their own origins or existence. There are three (3) schools of thought concerning the origins of humans. The 1st one is based in/on Religious beliefs that the heavens, the earth and everything upon the earth is the product of a Creator, a God. The 2nd one is based in/on Science that the…

This is a true convorsation that happened in a class I was in a year or two ago. I quoted it as best I could. Professor : You are a Christian, aren’t you, son ? Student : Yes, sir. Professor: So, you believe in GOD ? Student : Absolutely, sir. Professor : Is GOD good ? Student : Sure. Professor: Is GOD all powerful ? Student : Yes. Professor: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to GOD to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn’t. How is this GOD good then? Hmm? (Student was silent.) Professor: You can’t answer, can you ? Let’s start again, young fella. Is GOD good? Student :…

Something I read: "The principle of the experiment is simple, a cat is put in a box with poison (or explosives) this box has no windows, it's COMPLETELY sound proof and there is no way to tell if the poison (or explosives) goes off. So during this time the cat is considered both dead, and alive. Can this apply to God in religion? We cannot see, we cannot hear, we cannot have any physical evidence to prove he exists or doesn't exist so in the terms of physics, he both exists and doesn't exist. And before anyone goes (We know the cat exists cause we put it in the box) Prove to me the cat exists without opening the box, the simple truth is: You do not know, without …

Peace be upon you all, I wish to present you the scientific achievements of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq pbuh, our 6th Shia Imam who lived in 8th century. From the book - the Great Muslim Scientist and Philosopher Imam Jafar al-Sadiq pbuh, translated and published by Kaukab Ali Mirza: "Learned scholars from Europe have been studying Islamic Literature from the beginning of the 17th century. It was only after the expansion of their universities that American scholars started doing research on Islamic subjects. American and European scholars have written many books, after years of research, on Islam and great Muslim scholars. A number of them have been translated into Persian…

Why would anyone want to live forever? (in Heaven or Hell) When I die, I just want to die and go back to the state of 'non-existing'. Forever is a long time.

Hey guys, I'm a relatively new member. I've come to find most of the normal members here to be a bunch of very laid back, easy going guys. I probably come across as kind of strange to some of you here. All I can say is that I'm sorry for that. To the point, I see many threads here about religion, but none tackling the question of spirituality as it relates to atheism. Since I understand atheism to be mostly the rejection of claims that assert the existence of god(s), rather than the positive view that there is no supernatural realm or god(s). By this definition, I would consider myself an atheist. There are some popular atheists who claim to be highly spiritual …

Hey guys, I've always been fascinated by the image of God. More specific with the question why he always seems to be visualised as a human, although he/she/it is described as so much more than that. Than humans. Could it be that our body forms our reference from where we shape God? And could that also mean that (hypothetically speaking) if we are able to leave our body, we could create a new reference for the visualisations of God? (If attached an image which shows what I mean) What do you guys think about this?

Is belief in God without proving its existence a conspiracy theory? Nearly all believe in God. People have denied the existence of God by arguments that are flimsy. Should I continue believing in God though I have reached a stage of no return?

I like the quote by Stephen Jay Gould where he describes Science and Religion as "Non-overlapping magisteria." What Gould means by this is that both science and religion have fundamentally different ways of looking at the world and trying to evaluate it. As a consequence of this, science won't accept faith as a reason for believing something. So science will never accept religious assertions/beliefs. And for religion, it doesn't utilize science nor was it founded on or by scientific principles. So religions will never amend their belief systems based on scientific tests/experiments because faith-based belief isn't about validated and evidential beliefs. An example wo…

Tell me how God expects us all to Reject All Forms Of Evil, Yet God doesnt like us when we reject God for doing evil? How come God is Allowed to create evil things and do evil things and God gets angry at us when we Reject The Evil Things God Commits? When God Is Telling us To Reject Evil? AM I WRONG TO ASK THIS? God tell us to know good from evil, to do Good and Not Evil, To Accept Anything Good and Reject Anything Evil... But God Gets Angry When We Reject The Evil Things God Is Willing To Commit And Create? How Can We Follow A Path Of Goodness When God Is Asking Us To Accept The Evil Things God Wants To Commit To. Im Sorry, But I Just Dont Get It..... Do Good, R…

Hi guys, i'm new here but i wanted to share with you a video and want to know what you think. do you guys remember carl sagans quote "A religion old or new, that stressed the magnificence of the universe as revealed by modern science, might be able to draw forth reserves of reverence and awe hardly tapped by the conventional faiths. Sooner or later, such a religion will emerge." from pale blue dot? i watched this video today. these people want to spread this view and i checked there livestream and they get quite some shit for it. the video is pretty sensational and dramatic and people say its a cult. We intuitively assume that conviction and authenticity of belief are at the center of religious behaviors. However, lying for the cause arguably be anti-correlated with authenticity. Many followers posit a societal function of the religion that hinges on ingroup superiority. While ingroup superiority is occasionally a religious teaching itself that would tend to wane along with general general belief, this point is only an argument against the preponderance, not he existence, of "fake believers", which will refer to followers who remain subordinate primarily because of ideas about ingroup superiority rather than veracity of the religious teachings. Below are three Pro/…

I wasn't for sure whether to put this in the politics forum or the religion forum. I suppose it has nothing to do with politics. This is a thing that has bothered me for quite some time now. How is it that someone like Ben Carson, one of the most distinguished and successful neurosurgeons in the world is a full blown religious person who does not believe in evolution? It boggles my mind. Normally, I would look at a scientist or distinguished doctor who is this overtly religious and science-denying and think "well, its okay, they're not very successful, and they're not very distinguished anyway," but this is not so for Ben Carson. Ben Carson is likely much more intelligent…

It seems that a lot of traditional religion that seems absurd or irrational, such as an afterlife, ressurrection, a different world of existence, etc., actually becomes possible if some different scientific theories turn out to be true. For example, if more than 4 dimensions really do exist, then I suppose it's possible for some type of reality to exist there. If we exist inside a computer simulation, I suppose it's possible for the game to be turned off and turned on again, restarting the same characters. If there is a parallel universe, then I suppose exact copies of us could exist there. And so on.

Hey, guys. I need help with my Dad. He has been brainwashed by the cult religion, the Jehovah's Witnesses, which I grew up with myself, of course, but fortunately came to my senses. I believe the right person can persuade him to see the facts. He is not too close-minded like a lot of fundamentalists. I've wrote about my Dad's story here, but found no interest in helping me: http://sciforums.com/showthread.php?p=2913996 I need someone to chat with him about religion, the Bible, etc. and see how it goes. If he is unreasonable, so be it, but I do believe his will be reasonable and come to his senses. I wish for you to record the conversation (I can help with this i…
