I was just thinking, what other scientific fields have official symbols associated with them? Medicine has the Rod of Asclepius, Psychology uses the Greek uppercase letter Psi [math]\Psi[/math] Do any others have symbols corresponding with them?

I thought it would be fun to make a thread of annoying myths. I'm sure everyone is annoyed by myths that the naive general public sometimes belief. Ok some of mine: There is no gravity in space (when the astronauts go up) Humans only use 10% of there brain. (I guess this is debatable) Seasons are caused by how far away from the sun earth is. Creationism (I had to say it) These are all I've heard people say and believe to be true. I bet everyone has heard some.

I just did a bit of thinking, and came up with something: with today's technology, you could theoretically create a (less capable) version of the Enterprise. Here is how it would work: Propulsion: I know that with today's technology, you really can't make warp drive or whatever. But part of it is possible. You have several fission reactors powering the ship. These also power giant electromagnets which suck up all the atoms floating around in space. These are heated up and blasted out the back, like a rocket. Some of the gases could be used for maneuvering, also. You could get to maybe half light speed in a year or so, but you really wouldn't have the ability to do…

My buddy and I have had a debate for a long time over the link between grey hair and caffeine. He believes my grey hair coming through has been an effect by my intake of caffeine. I'm on the contrary as I am yet to see any evidence substantiating it. Can anyone chime in on our debate?

  8. I am just wondering what any scientists think would happen to you if all you ate was potato chips (aka crisps in the UK). You are allowed to drink water, but the only food you can eat is crisps. Apart from the obvious effect of getting bored of eating crisps, what physical effects would it have??? This is a genuine question! Cheers, RMP

I'm writing a story and for it, I want to know if rain (or precipitation rather) is necessary for life. If rain is just the cycle (and forgive me for not knowing the true technical terms for this) is just evaporation of the ground water into clouds that cause precipitation back to the ground, then do we really rely on rain? I know crops dry up if it hasn't rained for a long period of time, but if say today was the last day for the rain due to pollution or something, would we be able to survive? Could we not irrigate? Or is it vital for it to rain? On a further note, what could cause the end of precipitation?

  10. There is not a day that goes by with out the media going on and on about going to the moon or mars!!! Well it serious not going to solve problems of colonization of the moon or mars. It not going to solve overpopulation problem. It not some thing the middle class can have enough money on one way ticket to the moon or mars. Even the upper class will not have the money for a one way ticket to the moon or mars. So it not going to solve the overpopulation problem. What is with the government and private sector pushing this trip to the moon or mars in 10 to 15 years. When there is no spacecraft that cost effective? Any spacecraft they have and in the research …

My general idea is simple! Is it not possible that Intelligent design, that is the creation of life by intelligent means ( I have no idea what it is or could be, the possibilities are endless and mind boggling ) could incorporate evolutionary process. In other words life was created and meant to evolve and form on its own. While i already understand that intelligent design theory has not been able to produce lab results, I also know that mathematics is a very real thing, and Intelligent Design theory definitly has the mathmatical evidence. I also know that Evolution leaves behind some very real evidence, and i believe it happens every day. Science today has …

It has always been assumed all dinosaures such as Brontosaurus, triceratops and others like these were reptiles and they couldn't have been mammals because they lay eggs and no mammals were around back then. Well for a while now scientists have been debating this since they do have more mammal traits than reptiles and there are mammals today that do lay eggs. I found this article online by a Dr. Velikovsky and the article appeared in the KRONOS Journal in about 1978. R.Solàrion. I would quote it for you but instead here is the link for it. My link and it's not the only link I have found that have suggested these animals were mammal not reptile and it makes since …

Would it be possible to harness the energy from a lightning strike? I guess if we could, fossil fuel would become obsolete. Couldn't cosmic rays, aurora, tornado's and hurricanes also theoretically be used as a source of energy?

HPV Years back, I contracted an HPV from my dog. using peanut butter I coaxed the dog into licking my penis until ejaculation, and have had an HPV ever since. HOW IS THIS NOT COMMON KNOWLEDGE. HPV's are very common, and this is probably directly influenced by the lack of education. They do not even teach this in school. Please forgive me for this disgusting topic, It's just something that needs to be spread. Animals licking genitals is not a humorous occurrence. While researching this, I found another boy had the same problem, and the "doctor" replied, "that isn't possible."

  18. I want to see what you think about reckoning the reason why people 'illogically' oppose modern scientific advancement (besides tradition and what their parents brought them up to believe). So lets ignore for here the matter of ignorance, because there are many non-ignorant people who support creationism. (though those who do so out of ignorace, admitedly outnumber them) Here is the popular view: The big bang came, the universe worked itself out and on some planets extremely complex fine chemical reactions creat life and evolution. Why people do not want to believe this: first, it appears to mean there is no God involved in our creation, there is no after life (well no…

First of all, I'm sorry if anyone thinks this is in the wrong topic. I looked at all the topics, and I couldn't decide because different people will have different opinions about this post. Some may believe that this is fictional, or related to religion. However, I believe that this really happened, so I consider it to be real science. Several years ago, there were a few teachers in an elevator at a college in Gettysburg. They went down into the basement for some reason. When the doors opened, they found themselves back in the Civil War! The basement was being used as a hospital. There were injured Civil War soldiers everywhere. The teachers pushed a button…

Ok here goes. I am trying to find a corilation between high intelligence and depression. We have all heard the phrase "ignorance is bliss" and stupid people are often happy as a pig in sh*t . I have never added a poll to a thread before so I hope this works. I know this is will not prove anything at this stage but it will do untill I devise a decent test.

  21. Montreal in the Quebec province of Canada is located at a latitude of 45°30′N and currently shows a temperature of -28°C. http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/local/CAXX0301?from=enhsearch_loc In Zurich (Switzerland) which is even in a slightly higher latitude than Montreal (47°22′N) it's only 2°C. http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/local/SZXX0033?from=enhsearch_loc I wonder why is Montreal so cold for it's latitude?

hm the other thread on this subject got far to heated for any meaningful information to be gleaned from the thread. However the thread also had some interesting ideas in it which I think are worth a closer look at. Just to reiterate some of the points from theprevious thread which seemed to have gotten garballed. Peakoilman stated that Geologists had predicted the peak of American oil production in the 1970's, this prediction came true. Also he stated that a number of oil companies/geologists are predicting that oil, and coal are about to peak and or hve peaked in the majority of the world. I am very interested in 2 things happening in this thread. …

I've heard poor Luis de Broglie's name pronounced more ways than I care to think of. Does anyone know the correct pronunciation? I have always thought that the g is pretty much silent, and the lie part has a "yeh" sound to it. As in : " de Broh-yeh " Also, when I see "Euler" I want to say "you-ler", but I've heard someone say "oiler" before, is this right?

  24. I don't know if this initial post is clear but I will try to explain what I mean. Newton's Law of Gravity is presumably based on numerous observations and tests which led to the belief of a fundamental Law of Science. What are the steps to make a Law of Science? I am guessing the following: Observation Hypothesis (Tests for Reproducibility) Theory (Tests for Reproducibility, Falsification and Exceptions) Principle (e.g. the Anthropic Principle) Law However, I am a bit confused about the order of events and look for help here.
