Dear all, I wouldlike to present to you INBIOSA Project. The INBIOSA initiative is based on a profoundly newunderstanding of the role of biology in natural and engineering sciences. Ourdriving argument is that living systems have fundamentally different notions ofself-organization from those in engineering sciences today. Therefore, INBIOSAprepares a new research program to investigate the biological imperatives ofcomputation in a profoundly new way. This will be based on understanding thepremises for and the fundamental characteristics of emergence, organization, development and evolution in biology. Our goal isto develop a set of nov…

What are some good youtube channels that deal with science? I'm looking for either science news or explanations of things in science or discussions. I don't want sort of trivia type explanations like "why does a pan show rainbow colors after washing."

I think my earliest dabblings in science came from my fascination with space and flight. My parents bought me a book on the solar system when I was quite young, and this sparked my interest in astronomy. I was big into astronomy for years, but during my highschool years I started reading about the physics of the universe. My junior year(4 years ago) I picked up a copy of "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene, and this really interested me. In college my interests turned to biology and medicine, my future career (anyone know how to properly clean telescope mirrors without damaging them? I'd like to use the scope again, but the mirror is horrendously dusty) Pictur…

How do you guys think I'm doing with this nation's education? What could I add or build up to further increase the quality of our youths' education? I hear enough complaints so please, just give suggestions and not grumbling. I appreciate constructive criticism. - The President

I have two questions regarding a fish and a chicken. does a chicken have consciousness, that is does a chicken know it feels pain or does it just react to pain as a part of biology?because I want to know if it really does suffer or does it just react that way because of internal mechanisms. for the fish I have the same question as well,(fish that are eaten for nutritional value)

Ok next year I hope to be attending college, it seems as though alot of people on this forum are already in college, so i was hoping for some advice. I am pretty limited on my college options considering im poor, and my class rank is embarassing low:-( I'm probably gonna end up going to Columbus State University in Georgia, then hopefully get enough money to transfer to the University of Georgia. I have always wanted to be a scientist, and science and math are by far my best subjects. I am looking for a good program in Neuroscience, I noticed a few people in here going that route, and would be interested in hearing about that. Is it as fun as you thought it was go…

There is no question here, but I'd like to see comments. It is about my unpleasant experience in an M.Sc program in one of the US universities. Not an ivy league school, so relatively inexpensive. I was an out-of-state student, I guess it was even less expensive for the in-state ones. About half of the class were regular kids while another half were high school teachers who needed the degree to be able to teach in a higher education. I didn't have any prior experience in US schools, so maybe I'm not going to say anything new, but it was completely unexpected for me. The program was good, the professors were excellent, but the students... many of them routinely p…

I have seen countless discussions on the web (maybe even here) in which people stated that the US education system needs reform... ...and it puzzles me up to this day. AS the US education system has the highest number of the best universities in the world and the highest number of Nobel winners (all best scientists want to work in the US), then why should there be any need to change anything?

To those of you who already have a career in science: why did you choose your particular field? I'm having difficulty deciding on a major. The two things that interest me the most are probably the emergence of self-replicators (or the origin of life), and the nature of matter, which I suppose would fall under theoretical physics. The latter seems like it would be difficult to make much progress in, considering that projects like the Superconducting Supercollider are so expensive. Any suggestions?

Just as a preface: I do not intend to make a technology rant here, nor do I intend to succumb to the old "in the olden times everything was better" notions. In addition, I think there was already a similar thread somewhere but I could not dig it up. What I'd like to have is some input in the following thoughts: Background: At the moment I (still) work as a postdoc but due to various reasons I have a slightly higher than average workload regarding to creating and supervising both, theoretical and practical courses. Due to the nature of the topics I teach, the practical courses alone are usually not a sufficient indicator of understanding the topic, thus I usually…

Since alot of us are in college for science or preparing to be in college for science, I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone's taking: It's my second year in neuroscience/neurobiology Pre-MSTP, and this semester i'm taking: Organic Chemistry I / Lab University Physics (calc-based) II / Lab Calculus II Genetics Neurobiology ... total of 18 credit hours.

For the past few years I have wanted to pursue a scientific education, specifically in neuroscience. But I know that there are immense problems that I currently face (and will face) in pursuing this goal. The first problem is my terrible academic past. I barely passed high school. After high school, I went to a small, local, four-year university where I failed out. I got placed on academic suspension because I spent three years there, failed everything, and never made it beyond freshman status. I spent four years in the workforce before I concluded that i wanted education, and decided to go back to college. Actually, I had acquired the desire to pursue a science educ…

I often hear a claim that US universities are the best in the world, often backed up by lists like the Shanghai Ranking. So, are they? This claim gets my inner skeptic on for a simple reason - they are not free unlike universities in my.country (Poland)

Hey guys and girls, I have to write a 1500 word essay on the following questions, Does Science consist of 'facts'? If so, what are these facts, and how can we be sure that they are 'true' or 'correct'? If not, what does science consist of? Can anyone offer any advice or any comments on this?

I just got back from tutoring students at a local high school. It was an event for students specifically taking AP classes, which culminate in an exam which is accepted for credit by many universities. The students are generally high school seniors -- 17 or 18. Every student had a TI-89 calculator which they used to solve every problem. At one point, a student was working out some arithmetic and encountered this: [math]2\times \frac{4}{5} =\; ?[/math] She paused, looked uncertain, and said "well, I don't know that off the top of my head" and reached for her calculator. I'd ask other students "okay, now solve that equation for t" and they'd stare at me blan…
