This is probably two different subjects, but I'm guessing that the mechanics are the same. Why do some spieces of birds (geese for example), always seem to fly in a triangle formation? How do they decide who leads the formation? Lastly, how do schools of fish (sardines etc), and flocks of small birds, decide their next direction and is there a lead fish, or bird, as such?

I know that cats sleep about 18 hours a day, but my question is: Why do they? Why do they need to?

Last year I had to take a bio class. Early in the book, it talks about Cell Theory. In second semester it talked about cells evolving from bubbles of lipids(it had a name for them, but i don't remember it). They aren't compatible. Which one is in the standard model for biology?

Here are a few beetles I have found in my backyard pool skimmers. I think the first 2 may be darkling beetles, and the third one I am not sure of. The fourth one might be a scarab beetle?

Hi everyone, I need to know some information but have been unable to find them on the internet or pubmed. Do you know examples of proteins which have different function depending on the tissues that produces it? For example, a protein that is produced by bone may be involved in proliferating cells but the same protein produced by another tissues may actually decrease cell number. It doesn't have to be bone...I just want to know examples of proteins that have different functions depending on their expression. Thanks in advance Geno

Why does sweat A(or the bacterium growing on that sweat) smell differently in different parts of your body? Take your feet and armpits for example they smell different and groin sweat smells differently from anyother part of your body. I no this is a bit of a gross thread but try to keep back the lewd remarks.

My main question is: How long will it take for an insect (Preferably an Ant) to loose its color in 70% ethanol alcohol????? Are there better ways of preserving ants besides pinning and pointing?

Well Birds sorta do, but they don't do the same as fish. What kind of density requirements would an organism need to be able to swim through air the same as fish do through water? Density would be the issue right? O coarse whatever alteration result to make this possible would probably make an animal so fragile it'd never survive, but tell me about it anyway.

I have some succents, and i cant freakin figure out how much i'm supposed to water them. Most of them are doing ok, except for the Jade, it keeps on dropping leaves (is that what you call the green swollen things? it has no other leaves, but they don't look like regular leaves). I don't know if i'm giving it too much water and their rotting off (that's what happens if you give desert plants too much water), or if i'm giving it too little and it's just dying. What magnifys my confusion is the weird soil i've repotted them in. It doesn't absorb water at all. It just sits on the surface for a sec, then a minute later it's all run out the bottom--- i know because the water c…

I just had this interesting idea, unfortunately i don't think there is any living examples or evidences of it, so i don't know how to propose what the nature of your responses might be, but here goes. K so plants grow toward a source of light, generally the source is in the same place on average. Wait, is that true? maybe not in the case of the sun, but the movement of the sun is gradual enough not to cause any real chaos in the growth patterns of those who feed off of it (yes i am referring to plants and who). What if the plant was potted on a device that could spin, move up and down, and rotate in any direction. It could be computer controlled to move in different c…

I read somewhere once that our thoughts create chemical reactions inthe brain which are 'emotions,' and I was wondering if this had been scientifically proven.

Can you find the height of a person through foot size (is there a relation)? If I grow up to be, say, 6' 4" (male), is it possible to find my future foot size? What is the average foot size of a full-grown male? Can you find the height of a person through handspan (is there a relation)? If I grow up to be, say, 6' 4" (male), is it possible to find my future handspan? What is the average handspan of a full-grown male? If you find any other supposed comparisons, please post them on this thread!

Hello all, first of all I would like to thank the owners of this board for creating such a useful bio site. Secondly, I am having an assignment which is due tommorow and I am facing some problems in answering couple questions within the assignments so i hope anyone could be nice and give me a complete answer ASAP be4 tommorow: 1: Warm-blooded animals (birds and mammals) living in Tasmania are usually larger in size than animals of the same species living in warmer parts of Australia. Why? 2: Do you think a mammal could survive if it were the size of a mosquito? Explain. 3: Could an insect survive if it were the size of a horse? Explain. (Assume…

aka Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. I have a question on this, something that's been annoying me for a while. One of the things that make this a deadly problem in humans is their genetic predisposition(there is a gene or two in our genome that make it possible or easier), meaning if you have the genes, then more likely you will develop it after eating the meat, etc. However, something that I'm curios on is this, how do the prions survive the cooking and or burning process? Assuming that the meat you've just BBQ'd is Well-Done as opposed to Medium-Rare or worse yet, Rare, where the cause and effect is very obvious. So, taking a slice from a cow which is k…

I'm sure this question is a cliche but why do our fingers and toes get wrinkled when we stay in water for a long time. It can't be osmosis because the water potential of water is not more negative than that of the cells of the body.

here`s a question that`s bugged me for years! if anyone here`s ever tried Bacon or Ham, you`ll have noticed that it`s quite salty! and yet a pork roast isn`t and often requires salt. now it`s all off the same animal, so what is the reason that a shoulder of pork is salty and yet the cuts from the rear are not, and the texture is entirely different too? and you can rule of the curing process too, I`ve already experimented with that, and although Ham and Bacon do have extra salt added (sometimes too much) there is Still a difference!
