Hi All, I'm going to be on a panel about Rosalind Franklin at a science fiction convention Memorial Day weekend. This is the panel description: Rosalind Franklin, Dark Lady of DNA (Science) Brenda Maddox has just published [actually, it came out last year] a biography of Rosalind Franklin, the neglected researcher whose photos of the DNA molecule led to the double-helix breakthrough. Part of the reason why scientific history has ignored her is circumstantial---she died young, several years before the Nobel Prize was awarded to Watson and Crick. But she was also famously mistreated in Watson's book The Double Helix. Her case has implications for the position of…

Hi. I was wondering if anyone could give me a brief explanation of how transmission antennas work. I understand that continuously changing the direction of electron flow in the antenna causes a magnetic field to surround it, which creates an electric field, which again creates a magnetic field... etc. onward out into space, which is the so-called electromagnetic wave. But my question specifically is how the current is sent through the antenna. I understand that electric current flows from a negative charge to a positive charge, so is an antenna set up like a circuit? For example, my cell phone has a plastic antenna on top... underneath the plastic, is there a little wire …

I wasn't sure where this post should go so I put it here. Does anyone have any ideas for a Siemens Westinghouse project that I can do(or at least an area that I could look into)?

Hi all its been a while since i have been here. I have been automating my house and designing a web based control center so that i can monitor and control all the electrical devices in my house.(just a hobby of mine) Recently i started the Atkins diet. It works. I started 2 week ago and weighed 224lbs today i weigh 215. Most of that lose is water weight but I'm sure all of it is not. I have been drinking at least 2L of water a day. Of course i am urinating allot more than i used to and i am taking a Multivitamin without iron and also Oil of Oregano with a flaxseed oil base. I have been reading up on Atkins for while now and on another forum there are many qu…

Hello to you reading my post. I am new on this forum and I hope someone can explain me something about "my quest" to unrafel the "mysteries" of Time Dilation in "somehow" plain english. I tried to read a lot about this subject on the internet, but one thing remains a mystery to me, and I hope you guys can give me a satisfying explanation Imagine, a atomic clock begin on a jet traveling on 99% lightspeed, and a atomic clock being complety stationary. After some while, when both clocks are together and completely stationary, why is the clock on the jetplane behind? Is it because there is simply no explanation possible, like huge masses "make" gravity...an…

Can monosomy and trisomy be present in the same zygote so that they compliment each other, for example if one of the gametes had a monosomy and the other had trisomy, and they were both for the same pair of chromosomes could they chancel each other out?

does anyone know why fizzy drinks such as Coke causes mild pain of the tongue? at 1`st I thought it was maybe the Phosphoric acid and all the goodies in it that were creating this effect, then I carbonated plain tap water and it did the same? it`s works especialy well if you keep the liquid in your mouth for a while, now is it the carbonic acid? well I wondered that also and so I made some, it wasn`t that either! that leaves me thinking it`s something to do with the bubbles, maybe the tiny bursting like little explosions on the tongue causing trauma to the delicate tissues? or maybe the evolution of the gas from the liquid that maybe in between the buds of your tongue …

A solid can dissolve in a liquid and if you increase the temperature then more solid can dissolve in the liquid before it becomes saturated. Why is it that increasing the temperature for when a gas dissolves in a liquid decreases the amount of gas that dissolves in the liquid before it becomes saturated? Why does increasing the temperature have the opposite effect. EXAMPLE This can be seen when the temperature of a lake rises so that the dissolved oxygen levels decrease and therefore all the fish die.

My question: When a radioactive element decays it changes to other elements: why is it that most (if not all) radioactive materials decay to lead after giving off beta or alpha particles? Why should lead be the most stable element it decays into - what makes it special!?

I was just messing with some light bulbs and a high frequency power supply and I created this weird effect... The second bulb is more than an inch away from the first but with a very hot arc inside; if I left it there for long it would have melted the glass and burned my finger. There are not even any streamers between the bulbs... weird.

When testing for the halide ions - chloride, bromine and iodide. 1. You place silver nitrate together with the substance you want to test. Then you get if: Chloride ions present: white solid Bromide ions present: off-white solid Iodide ions present: yellow solid i know that if a carbonate is present it also forms a white solid so therefore you place any acid apart from hydrochloric acid so that the carbonate decomposes. Are there anymore exceptions? What makes some carbonates insouble and what makes most nitrates souble?

A new 'free horsepower' source in many forms of racing is creating a vacuum in the crankcase. Benefits are reduced load on the bottom side of the piston rings, and more importantly, a less dense atmosphere for the crankshaft and pistons to operate in. My question: All I can pull is 10in Hg at idle, and 7 in Hg at WOT (wide open throttle). Since this appears to be a substantial vacuum already, how much more is there to be gained by higher vacuum than 7in Hg in the crankcase? Meaning, is there an appreciable and workable amount of more air to be drawn out above 7in Hg to say, 14in Hg? Or are the pistons and crankshaft already operating so thin an amoun…

Have you ever noticed that when a large electrical system is shut down, a very loud clicking noise with a low frequency hum follows? I was recently at a baseball game when three separate banks of lights were shut down one after another. The noise was as I described above. Click-boom, Click-boom, Click-boom. Also, have you ever been asleep and wake up right at the moment the power goes out during a storm? In this example, it is almost like the sound of silence is greater than the sound of background noise. Is that possibly the same effect taking place in the question above? Can electricity make noise and sound?

What made Humans, humans? Why are we evolved more than say, the Hippo, or a Wasp? What makes us different? Was it a change in our enviorment? Was it just random "mutations" that made us this way? Or maybe, the only thing that seperates us from every other animal is the ability to imagine? Imagination is the biggest thing seperating us from other animals. Well, maybe . And if this is true, how did we develop this ability? Again, was it a random "mutation"? Again, I take a part out of Micheal Crichtons "The Lost World" (I reffer to this book a lot) "If you believe the current theory, then all the wonderful complexity of life is nothing but the accumulation …

This hardly qualifies as science, and perhaps very immature/trivial sense of fun, but whatever. Just for fun, can anyone with a somewhat extensive knowledge in human migration, give me an estimation range of how what my relation would be to a certain individual of another nationality (say billionth cousin or uncle, or somethin like that). There'd be a million things to take into account such as life span and reproductive frequency of the general population at the time of migration, who knows what other crap. K so i am mostly english, some german, and like a 32nd Cherokee. How closely am i related to my friend who is chineese? More closely than my 100% European des…

ok so we`ve had the Battery/LED challenge, now for something to REALLY get you all thinking! the challenge is to make your own Lightbulb, it must be a Filament type bulb and use no more than 12 volts! the current (amperage) is entirely up to you it must involve no electronics other than the power supply unit of 12v, and can be whatever weight you want it to be (theres no restriction of weight in this challenge). HOWEVER!!!! (here`s the hard part), it must be bright enough for you to read a book in a totaly dark room! the winner is the one who`s bulb lasts the longest! so stopwatches at the ready, and Good Luck to you ALL! ) send pictures in here where p…
