Pseudoscientific or speculatory threads belong here.

Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

Note: My F key isn't working very well so add an f where ever you think there should be one. When returning from university yesterday i noticed that the rate of No.36 buses going in the opposite direction was much greater than the number of buses heading in the direction i wanted. first:the bus timetable says there should be 4 buses per hour, although in reality, and not in an administrators office, it is more like 3. second: i get on the bus to the terminus which takes about 15 minutes so at most there should be 3 buses from the stop i get on at around the loop which then passes the same road only on the other side. third: no other routes go near this one until…

Here are my thoughts on the two most practical ways to bring about Singularity. This is building on ideas I've posted before. One route starts at BlueGene and takes the SAI route, the other starts at BlueBrain and takes the IA route. Scenario One: Commercial Wetware I have long been convinced that creating a marketable brain-computer interface is not only an inevitability, but is also the single most practical means to achieving Singularity. By wetware I am talking about a direct neural interface; a device which allows the brain to exchange abstract information directly with computer networks. Equipped with such a device, you would in effect have access to al…

hello could what we take for ghosts in some instances be infact recordings from the past? remember reading a long time ago about a house that some people said was haunted by a elderly woman, whom was sometimes scene in an upstairs window. two investigators decided to investigate not being believers or non-believers in the paranormal. what they found was there was indeed a elderly woman in the upstairs window, but it had nothing to do with ghosts. instead what they found was that the house had old glass windows that had a small amount of silver nitrate. as it turned out the elderly woman use to enjoy sitting at the window watching lighting storms, and condic…

This has been a rumored conversion from our current silicon technology in the near future on several sites and news groups. Scientists have recently been able to grow diamonds in labs at a rate of something like one carrot an hour, and with their supreme organised structure they are able to transfer heat very well (as far as I understand it) and this would allow immense amounts of data be transfered in milliseconds. In addition to diamond computing, others have said there have been advances in light technology, being able to slow or even stop light ( http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/Science-Fiction-News.asp?NewsNum=458 ) and are able to transfer data on lightwaves. So, wi…

I got this in my email this morning, thought it was cute and want to share it with you guys N gals...... ********** Subject: Mid-term in Chemistry The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington Chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well. Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.…

EVIDENCE FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE LIGHT WAVES The ‘expansion of the light waves has real evidence for its support. Examples: The magnetic field patterns where the central portion is expanded by an ‘intrinsic force’ between the poles (similar monopoles?). This is also true of the electric field between its charges (by similar virtual charges mutual repulsion). The electric motor makes use of these intrinsic forces within the EM fields to generate the power for its use. The photons are primarily a compressed congregate of 'negatively charged virtual particles' that result from the magnetic pulses of radiation by the electron transitions. These magnetic puls…

CAUSE OF CMBR The Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation is portrayed as the clincher evidence to prove the credibility of the Big Bang Universe. The CMBR is portrayed as a perfect black body radiation curve. However, here I will provide a hypothesis that refutes the link between the CMBR and the BB. On page 266 of the Michael Zeilik book entitled ASTRONOMY, The Evolving Universe, sixth edition, is an illustration (figure 13.6) of the solar radiation curve as viewed outside our atmosphere in comparison to a black body radiation curve. I tried to locate a website with this illustration but cannot find one. Some others may have more luck. Notice that at the …

I wasn't sure if this should go in metaphysics, philosophy, or here. I chose here, because I am trying to speculate and understand more, from a scientific/physics friendly standpoint, the nature of consciousness and specifically potentially transference and duplication of an instance of conscious awareness. Some of the ideas that have been kicked around in other threads include the idea of achieving effective immortality by transferring yourself to a machine in a "Ghost in the Shell" fashion. While I think with the right technology you can tranfer a person's personality completely to a synthetic system, I am skeptical that the "consciousness" would be able to …

  9. I had a few striking ideas hit my mind that led to putting together a massive puzzle. I know what you are thinking, that many amatures have said this kind of thing before aswell as probably PHD persons aswell. The catch is, I did not change any of equations that einstien has written or any of the scientist for that matter as far as I know. I beleive I have just only interpreted everything with more of on earth type of reality lookout. I beleive that there is 2 interpreations of 0. I think it can be negative and positive. now if you could use those mathimatical equations to project reality on a computer screen, a simple negative and positive out look of numbers would cau…

A thought experiment: Time is a tube and you are in the tube. You feel motivated to get out of the tube and you don't want to retrace your steps or move in circles. As luck would have it you have a well chewed wad of gum and a good sized ball of string. You use the gum to "stick the string to the wall" and march on down the tube till it seems to split in two. Still wanting to get the hell out of there, you figure it might pay to be consistent instead of wandering aimlessly, so if you choose left, you keep on choosing left and if you don't "cross your own string" am I right in surmising that you are moving in an outward spiral, and chosen the most likely way to get ou…

Hi everyone. I’m new here, even so wanted to share some information/thoughts regarding electrolysis of H2O to produce Fuel, i.e. Oxygen and Hydrogen. I have been reading some interesting articles on Browns Gas (which is the gas produced by Splitting H2O through electrolysis). http://www.hydrogen-boost.com http://www.savefuel.ca/ (I take the results/claims from these tests with a pinch of Salt) although i am sure there is something in it! Main purpose of my interest is Bourne through wanting to save money and to increase efficiency of my car. I have ordered a Browns Gas generator for my car which I intend to install and experiment with shortly. I u…

  14. note: don't expect to find any science in here. As the galaxies are moving apart, intergalatic travel is becoming harder everyday. From my understanding, the universal expansion is accellerating. Of course so are our space ships. Now if the universe is accellerating faster than our space ships, then we'll never catch up but if our space ships are getting faster, faster then we might. What do you think?

I have no idea if this is ludicrous or not - I don't know anything about the underlying science. I am curious, about the ability to passively detect sound through a vacuum like space through the aid of specific devices. In short, if you had a metal module in space, with mechanical elements clanking away within it, and it is radiating infra-red heat, could the disturbances and minute vibrations that the sound waves were causing in the metal structure of the module be detected remotely with correct sensory equipment to detect the fluxuations via the light radiation and reproduce the sounds through speakers?

i know this is star treky, but its probably possible. think of two north magnets, push them together than let go and they will fly apart, would the same happen if you compress a bunch of electrons in a sphere, than release them. thatd take alot of power tho, wouldnt it.

  18. Okay, this meme comes to us from a guy who was trying to argue to me that infinite regression is the only logically consistent way the universe could possibly exist. He kept trying to assert that he was using "logic" when really the greatest logic he could muster was an argument from incredulity. So, here you go, here's the meme he was trying to spread regarding dinosaurs, apparently completely unaware of how surface area and volume scale with different exponents in relation to size, and how these properties affect body composition. By his logic, humans can't exist (within the framework of Newtonian mechanics), because if we scaled a mosquito to human size, its legs…

Any geologists here mind to explain me briefly about this theory? http://www.hollowearththeory.com/ I ran across it and don't know this theory is recognized and has scientific merit or not. The link says about "The Hollow Earth Theory" with the serious scientific evidence supporting the theory that planets are naturally hollow. I intended to post in geology forum, but couldn't find, plus I am afraid it's not a current known geological theory as I don't know about this field...so i decided to post under speculation and hopefully the mod would be kind to move to wherever it belongs to. Thanks

I would like to present some strong circumstantial evidence that suggests that the earth has a low level fusion core. If we look at weather, it is expressed via the clockwise spin of high pressure circulations and the counter clockwise spin of low pressure circulations. The high pressure circulations can be reasonably equated to the rotation of the earth, while the low pressure circulations go opposite. The opposite spin allows the two weather circulation to be spin additive, thereby maximizing the speed at which potential is removed from the atmosphere. If low and high pressure both had the same spin, the pressure difference between high and low would still cause th…

  22. QUESTION: I was wondering... We all know the harzardous potential of a Mega-Tsunami, http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/horizon/2000/mega_tsunami.shtml the tsunami that carries a wave big enough to go 20km in land of the Eastern coast of America.... Well, I was wondering...since its displacement of water is so huge, is there a possibility that it can change or just temporarily disrupt our North Atlantic Current? The current that supposedly brings warm atmosphere up from the equator. I have a feeling it won't because tsunamis don't really affect our Earth's Coriolis effect (or do they?) but I am not sure. Please answer, thank you

Could the brain ever develop modem-like qualities, such as you would see in a mobile phone or some such - being an electrical device that can communicate with other devices (other brains) without needing a direct physical connection? Could this be a reasonable explanation of telelpathy?

This is a kind of "theory" I made up, if for nothing more than a science fiction story. Keep in mind that this "theory" I show to you is somewhat incomplete and open to new concepts, and I also wrote it in only a couple of hours. Well, keep an open mind and enjoy. If there are any concepts you feel that I am missing, feel free to share them. First of all, one thing the string theory suggests is that the universe is sort of "donut shaped", and worm holes could be used as a shortcut to the other side of this curved universe. But imagine that these worm holes could also send us to another completely different universe. Ponder that and I'll get back to it. Now, here…
