Speculations
Pseudoscientific or speculatory threads belong here.
The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:
- Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
- Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
- Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.
The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

Here is where I would like to put any ideas on how you can live forever. The first idea that I would like to present is replacing all of your organs and bones with mechanical counterparts. If the brain was just by itself, how long would it last?

An orbiting electron around the nucleus readily absorb Energy such as light and then excites. As it excites the +ve charge of the protons makes the electron start loosing energy. it doesnt start removing the Light energy from itself because that will be against "Quatum Theory", so it waits until the total energy is drained out and then it releases them as Packets of Light energy (Quanta)and then at the same time returns to its previous orbit due to the energy lost. This is the Quatum Theory of Excited State.OK, this is one that is so simple and of course classical if you put into a hydrogen electron (in its ground state orbiting around the proton which readi…

Are any 2 electrons exactly equal in all possible mathematical sense ? Is this really conceivable and possible ? I find it hard to imagine 2 electrons that are exactly equal as if they were 2 exactly equal numbers. So electrons would end up being pure mathematical entities-abstractions. Maybe quantum indetermination and virtual particles and feynman diagrams of electrons self interacting make it so that NO TWO ELECTRONS ARE REALLY EVER EXACTLY EQUAL.... to any decimal place. No 2 electrons are exactly equal because they have different positions in space and undergo slightly different influences by their surrounding environment. So they have slightly different coordin…

First, I have no evidence to prove this. It it simply another explanation for the mass extinction 65 million yest ago. As strange as it may sound, my idea is that humans killed the dinosaurs. People still debate that time travel is impossible. However, physics have already proved that you can bend time. What I am suggesting is that in the future, assuming we have the technology for time travel, a mad scientist will want to answer the question: What really killed the dinosaurs? This scientist will travel aprroximately 65 million years to into the past to find out. The scientist could have a cold, and the cold could go to a dinosaur at the lower end of th…

Many many galaxies away, far beyond the view of our modern telescopes, there is a small hole (for lack of a better word) and this continually spews out energy. Not much energy, in fact less than a joule a year. This energy comes from the larger multiverse that our universe habitates, in sort of the same way that a punctured ball takes in water when placed in a bucket. Is there anyway that we know this is not there? If not, then why are we so sure that the universe is a closed system?

Will it ever be possible for us to change our dna completely? Will it be possible for us to change our DNA and tell it not to use oxygen, but maybe hydrogen for life, and tell it that 400 degrees celsius wont kill us. Maybe then we could move onto another planet. Could we evolve our selves manually?

Hi, I'm new as you can tell and I have a question. I will try to word it as good as I can so bear with me. I have been asking myself this for a while now. Oh, this has nothing to do with God. Let me first start off with a reminder that when you sleep time passes by quicker (you feel that it does). To you it will feel like a moment, no matter how long have you been out, coma....whatever When you die it's the same deal, only no dreaming after a couple of days, once shit stops completely. So in no way will you know how much time passed. Now, universe is infinite, and here comes my question, or whatever you call it. Infinite universe never goes away, and ma…

Wow, so I've just stumbled upon this whole "consciousness singularity" idea (yay, more singularities!) which is essentially that the amount of intelligence in the universe is increaing in an exponential trend and will eventually reach some sort of limit where the universe has been completely consumed by consciousness. Then I found this little piece someone wrote: http://www.decillion.us/dmax/essays/BootStrappingGod-orig.html Here's what he had to say about it: And yeah, that's pretty much what I believe, that we're heading towards a future where the amount of intelligence in the universe continues to balloon exponentially and we are basically sitting …

If we look at a typical neuron, it has a cell body and two types of branching processes, the dendrites and the axons. Neurons are directional with respect to internal current flow, with the axon the output zone. The dendrites are the most common current input zone due to axon output from another neuron working in conjunction with neurotransmittors. The axon output of one neuron can also affect a cell body and as well as the axons on a neighboring neuron, but the final internal current flow, will exit the axon. Although the internal current direction within neurons will flow from the dendrite, through the cell body toward the axon, the external surface current of a ne…

Hydrogen bonds are more than a dipole potential between a hydrogen atom and the unbonded electrons of an highly electronegative atom. What makes hydrogen bonds unique is that the hydrogen goes into a hydrogen bond carrying the primary burden of the potential. The shared electrons will have a lower potential to form the hydrogen bond. This anomaly can be understood by looking at the hydrogen bonding in water. A water molecule will have four hybrid sp3 orbitals. The hydrogen of water are bonded to two of these four orbitals. The other two hybrid orbitals are occupied by unshared electrons that participate in hydrogen bonding. The hybrid orbitals allow the covlantl…

I know that Einstien said that light speed was impossible to break. But I've got a challenge for everyone here. FIND A WAY. lol. I'm not sure of his exact words but I know many people believe it is impossible because it is impossible to substane life at such speeds. But what would happen if you could shift a body into a complete energy form. Then how about if you switch the person back to matter even before the full transfer of matter to energy can be completed? Is this even remotly possible? If not post any and all Idea's of how to reach Warp speed here. Notice I said reach it, not survive it.

I know a man who has a somewhat clear presentation on protons being imagined as: POSITRON::ELECTRON::POSITRON . First of all, did you realize that one charge can attract two (or more?) opposites? The mutual repulsion is less in the above scheme, than attraction. The humor is gigantic: WHERE DID ALL THE ANTIMATTER GO? LONG TIME PASSING... This I present of a paper from Charles Southwood, just for fun.

I've got an Idea and I would like somebody to help me bring it along. I've got no science backgroud so i'll try my best. Would it be possible to build a strong and tall enough wind turbine to reach the Jetstream? If not how about a stationary ship or something similar to it. Think of the possblitys. Do the the high speed of Jet streams, enormous amounts of pwer could be created. If not how's this. My idea is a Nova Sphere. In which the plan is to totaly surround a star inside a structure in order to harness all power comming from it? Maybe the metal or other substance used to surround it could be mixed with pure carbon and ion particles? Would any of…

I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything about bessie, the lake monster in Lake Erie. Do you think it exists? Why or why not? Personally, I don't see how a serpent that is 30 to 40 feet in length could get into Lake Erie. It would have had to come from the ocean, but the only way you can get to Lake Erie from the ocean is by going upstream, through a man-made river, and over many large waterfalls. If bessie does exist, it would have had to get there a different way which I fail to recognise. Last, there is no physical evidence that I am aware of. On the other hand, there have been numerous sightings, including a report of bessie capsising a boat and kill…

If there's anything remotely resembling a conspiracy theory which I, as a devout skeptic, believe, this is the one. Why would I believe that a rock star with persistent depression, mental instability, and a heroin problem was murdered when he is officially recognized to have committed suicide? The answer comes from my interpretation of the available evidence. Unfortunately, much of the interpretation requires an extensive medical background to be done properly, and that is something I sorely lack. So, I'm afraid I'm going to take the crazy conspiracy theorist approach here and throw up a bunch of questions. But rather than simply throwing the questions out t…

Let me first start by saying my interest in physics is that of a lay person. I have no formal training beyond 1st semester undergraduate Physics. That being said, physics is something that I have been interested in ever since I was a child, and I take every opportunity to read about it in books written specifically for the lay person to understand. I think I have a fairly good understanding of the major areas of research in modern theoretical/particle physics, or at least as good of an understanding as one can have without an in depth knowledge of the mathematics involved. I would also like to say that I do not think that I've figured it all out and have some super duper…

What the average person like myself finds when studying the UFO phenomenon is a lot of rumors, a lot of speculation, and even more garbage. Nevertheless, one thing is for sure, something IS going on. Possibilities are endless, and many are likely, but it's a strong fact that there is an unidentified intelligent presence in our skies and in our space. The massive amount of witness testimony alone should be enough to no longer ignore this issue. Irrational skeptical arguments can no longer be tolerated, for people are generally not stupid, and I am not stupid, we are seeing these things... they are real. The question is no longer 'Are they here?', but is 'Why are …

hello people always talk about how we will develope computers that think like humans. my conjecture would be will they really think like us, or will they develope their own form of logic and reasoning. there could be neural nets developed to imitate human brain patterns but as computers are not organic, could a thinking computers devise their own means to use and\or create a neural network. as almost a seperate type of non-organic life could they begin to form their own systems of logic and reasoning totally unrelated to the way humans think. at some point would a programmers job not be to program a computer how to think, but instead try to find ways to inte…

For a long time now I've heard stories about a peculiar sound emanating from a mysterious deep-water source that marine scientists confidantly believe to be produced by a very large organism that they're calling "Bloop". Apparently some years back a series of sounds of very low frequency of a strength that suggests a creature much larger than a whale were recorded by submarines at a certain depth where sounds carry particularly far. I haven't been able to find anything but laymen articles, recordings of the sound, and a short reference in a documentary about whales, (nothing that I'd consider official), but what I've heard doesn't sound like some Big-Foot or Nessi…

I think I'm way closer next time, so here we go. Wild speculation ahead! The universe is drawn towards self-completion (eschaton) It self-completes by solving the halting problem. It solves the halting problem by terminating. There are no non-terminating algorithms because all seemingly non-termingating algorithms exist within a single terminating algorithm, the universe. In the end, there is only one algorithm, the universe, and its inevitable outcome is to choose to self-terminate and thus self-complete. I say "it". What is "it"? It is the collective action of all the consciousness within the universe. Consciousness is what will actually solve the hal…

MY VERSION OF A SSU It is infinitely old. There was no beginning or end. However, the formed structures like galaxies, stars and photons, go through a recycling process. The matter content itself, does not because it complies to the 'Laws of Conservation of Matter and Energy’. It would also comply with the other conservation laws. It compliers with all the problems the current ‘big bang universe’ does not explain like the Michelson-Morley interferometer experiment that refutes the existence of a spatial ether as a carrier of the light waves. It portrays space is flat. No expansion or contraction. Hence no need for General Relativity. The redshift of the …
