Pseudoscientific or speculatory threads belong here.

Speculations Forum Rules

The Speculations forum is provided for those who like to hypothesize new ideas in science. To enrich our discussions above the level of Wild Ass Guesswork (WAG) and give as much meaning as possible to such speculations, we do have some special rules to follow:

  1. Speculations must be backed up by evidence or some sort of proof. If your speculation is untestable, or you don't give us evidence (or a prediction that is testable), your thread will be moved to the Trash Can. If you expect any scientific input, you need to provide a case that science can measure.
  2. Be civil. As wrong as someone might be, there is no reason to insult them, and there's no reason to get angry if someone points out the flaws in your theory, either.
  3. Keep it in the Speculations forum. Don't try to use your pet theory to answer questions in the mainstream science forums, and don't hijack other threads to advertise your new theory.

The movement of a thread into (or out of) Speculations is ultimately at the discretion of moderators, and will be determined on a case by case basis.

  1. Started by Crispy Bacon,

In recent years, scientists have been stunned to discover how life in the universe is astoundingly balanced on a razor's edge. The Big Bang was actually a highly ordered event that required an enormous amount of information, and from the moment of inception the universe was finely tuned to an incomprehensible precision for the existence of life. Embedded within the laws of physics are roughly 30 numbers—including the masses of the elementary particles and the strengths of the fundamental forces—that must be specified to describe the universe as we know it. If any of these parameters were to change even slightly, the consequences for life would be devastating. Fine…

  2. I have, on another forum, been trying to theorise my own life form. it goes a little something like this... Okay, first off you need to know your nano-science. this 'electrical machine,' is going to need more than electricity and parts - it needs bio mass to reproduce. if it was to be very small, we can already do it. if it was to be done on a small scale, and then made bigger slowly, adding particles to the gluons, then they could slowly give it more attributes and functions. no metal or plastics should be used. In fact, the 'being,' could be a complete living thing. if it were to be given the attributes that will help it breathe and eat, which should be fairly easy…

  3. I guess I never asked this about this Law of Conservation of Energy: Was the Law of Conservation of Energy ever proven for electricity? Was it ever proven for capacitors, inductors, resistors, batteries, electromagnets, motors, parallel circuits, etc.?

  5. I decided to make a thread just for this. I sent two articles to peer-reviewed journals, one of them to seven different journals. Although some of the journals were published by the same company, each journal is a separate journal, even in a series of journals. (One article is still being checked, but the editor is currently on a vacation or trip.) What happened was the editors just "threw them out". They just said "not suitable" or something. The articles didn't even get to the peer review stage! I don't know what the peer-reviewers would say, but they would probably not even check the claim. I question, then, how science could accept new ideas! I questio…

  6. It seems that GR, a PDF from a member here linked me to, does not apply to this topic. I will need the science community in helping me understand the wave function to further explain this in a more precise manner if that is at all possible, I cant comprehend the symbols. However, would this even apply if the following may be true? Here is the E = hf = hc / wave length of which determines the energy of the photon. The resulting numerator is: = 1.9878e-23???? This is the number my calculator gave me. Extrapolated the new product is now 1.982e-17 Using this new unit of measure with cosmic rays we have the following: 1.982e-17/ cosmic rays 10e…

  7. I'm using quite a loose definition of "enhanced" here. Assuming we knew which genes coded for which traits and we used that knowledge to produce the child with the most desirable traits (i.e. the ones that will give the child the best start in life) how much "better" would the average child be if he were produced by A) Using PGS to choose between 5 embryos, B) Selecting the best sperm from millions and the best egg from, say, a dozen C) Choosing the best chromosomes from a bunch of sperm and eggs and sticking them together in such a way that you get an embryo (is this even possible/feasible?) D) Any other method you can think of. Am I right in thinking that the averag…

Theres been a list compiled here of over 100 alternatives to the mechanisms of the modern evolution synthesis, dont worry this has nothing to do with creationism. There appears to be some decent alternatives such as the mechanism of molecular drive, or symbiosis driving evolution instead of natural selection. see the list here (and yes theres also some metaphysical ones), what do you think about some of these? Non Darwinian evolution mechanisms and their authors

  9. It depends on how you choose to define universe. I tend to lean towards It's hard to conceive of a point that has no existence or space to house it. For that reason, I think that everything that exists, exists within the universe.

Was wondering if it is possible that instead of "strings" what if all matter is connected by "tubes" allowing the passage of matter between universes. If so there is the possibility that antimatter coming into contact with matter could have caused an annihilation which created the "Big Bang". True?

  11. How can someone "age" if they were traveling on a light photon? I have read and I am sure many are familiar with this question here, however if the speed of light is constant and flows in a "straight direction" or omni "massless" then where does this photon "turn" to register a cycle of earth time?? Example: An earth year = 365 days in a year because earth goes around the sun right? So my question may be "where" does the speed of light "cycle" "turn" "orbit that gives the age of someone traveling on a light photon?? Would this not violate E= mc squared? And if so does the squaring of the speed of light above have anything to do with time loops? Thi…

Now before I get tackled by every physicist in the community for dissing Einstein, let me explain: this is purely THEORY. Theoretical physics is what I specialize in and its simply a thought experiment. Sound travels faster when it is put through a medium of greater density, I.E, sound will travel faster when it is sent through water, and even faster when sent through solids such as steel and even rocks. From Wikipedia, "Speed of Sound" article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_sound "In common everyday speech, speed of sound refers to the speed of sound waves in air. However, the speed of sound varies from substance to substance. Sound travels faster in liqui…

  14. I think Einstein was wrong. At least, he wasn't completely correct. When Einstein imagined if he could ride on a beam of light, he questioned what he would see if he looked into a mirror held up to his face. He reasoned correctly that he wouldn't see anything because the light of his face could never reach the mirror to even have a chance to reflect back. He postulated that in fact he would still see his face as light and that light would still be measured to be the same speed. To compensate for this, he assumed that time itself slowed down. The problem? He assumed that the phenomena that he measured, namely light, would be the very same essence in any varying…

Is the quality of evidence discussed in science? The credibility of the scientists? Is care taken to ensure that the evidence actually follows the theory, and not just the idea of the theory? I specifically mean with respect to Newton's "Laws", the "Law" of conservation of energy, Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics.

I had a thought back in high school. What if the reason no nukes were detonated after WW2 and why they all look like normal gas explosions was that nukes don't exist the way mainstream physics says? Could have involved pyrotechnics, normal explosives and camera tricks, also. What if maybe Bruce Cathie was right? Can metal really explode? Why only radioactive elements? Could radioactivity be something else? I've seen YouTube videos of plasma cutters "vaporizing" metal or cutting it. No nuclear explosion there. Would a small piece of metal or a small bomb even be able to produce the thick black and gray clouds it the videos? I say no! I could be mistaken, but how …

  20. Can Hydrostatic Equilibrium Explain Pi Radians??? In this article here titled: The shape of a planet in hydrostatic equilibrium http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2FBF02507222 It states the following: A new technique for computing gravitational equilibrium surfaces (considering gravitational and rotational potential) as a function of depth is presented here for a hydrostatic planet, i.e. a planet where rigidity is neglected. NOW, My reasoning behind Pi Radians is because it results in a perfect 1/2 of a circumference when used with a length that is not a multiple of 2 " from what I know." Hydrostatic Equilibrium also ref…

  22. Hello, how are you? Members, please assist me with the the following problems: 1. For performing gene splicing at home, i do acknowledge that need to have a restriction enzyme to cut apart my gene/DNA strand's base pairs/nucleotides such as: audonine, gaunine, cytocine, uracale and thymine, but can't i just use other types of equipment such as a pair of sissors? The sissors we use to cut papper? My biology teacher, back in high school stated that gene splicing can be performed by using sissors and applying heat on the gene we want to cut apart. Is that true? If yes, then why are we using restriction enzymes instead of the sissors we use at home? Why are we not u…

  23. Started by Kramer,

Two controversial observations. (A lay man confused in elementary physics knowledge) In this ugly sketch are two frames: first in movement with V velocity in X direction. , the second frame is in rest. In the moving frame are two electric charges with the same sign, and the observer (Kramer I). They don’t feel the movement. For the Kramer I-- the charges are not moving, He used Coulomb law and determine that charges which have the same sign create a force that repels each other. In the rest frame is another observer --- Kramer II. He observe a different phenomena: there are two electric charges, which have the same sign and are moving parallel in X direction with…

I've sometimes wondered what would happen if human beings were reptilian instead of primates. Then I looked into the hypothetical humanoid descendant of a particular dinosaur. But Troodon? Why did they pick that dinosaur in particular? How would it have been the best candidate to evolve into the hypothetical lizard man I mentioned?

  25. if photons experience no proper time, then from a photon's perspective, every event on their flight path = simultaneous at the same moment of time, and also co-occurring at the same place (= location of photon) so, from the photon's POV, every possible interaction, w/ space plasma, space dust, or some human HST; near or far, from its location of origination; are all perceived as simultaneous in space & time, a little like a "lifetime passing before one's eyes" sort of experience. so, the from the photon's POV, it emerges into existence; is immediately presented with a panoply of options for interaction, similar to a multi-slit experiment ("which door to take")…
