It seems that the code tag is deactivated in for comments on user pictures. There probably is no reason why it should be deactivated there. Could you [where supposedly "you"="Capn", as always] activate it?

Just wondering if there are any plans to update the homepage i.e Book of the Month, and the Richard Dawkins talk. It's just there's no longer a media / book discussion forum...plus, it might look better with something more current (with the homepage being the first page any newcomers will see.) Just a thought.

It's probably too difficult of a mod, but it would be nice if moderators could set a 'heat factor' on a thread, starting at 'mild' to 'almost hot enough to close' so people have an easier time gauging how close to the edge of acceptability a given thread is. Right now I feel like in the "Do you believe in Thor" thread I'm walking on eggshells out of concern it could get too hot and be closed, but it's not easy to guess how concerned the mods are at any given moment. Perhaps I am being overly concerned, and if a mod finds it concerning at all they'll just make a comment to that effect.

might I suggest that allowing people to post a reply without specifying which post it is in response to renders threaded view pretty well useless. seems to me that making that impossible would be a minor change.

I just edited a post of mine in this very thread, and the "save changes" button read "Vote now". It was strange.

Is there any little problem with SFN you think needs to be solved? Something we could do to make SFN better? Something we could change? Give you a foot massage? Anything? Post your ideas here if you have any.

In yet another thread that was revived from the dead, Sisyphus said Is there any way to modify the default vBulletin scripts to make responding to an idle thread something subject to moderator approval (akin to posting to the Announcements threads)? In other words, some user who just came up with a witty reply to a question raised and answered 4 years ago would see a popup "Post marked as pending. This thread has been idle for a long time. Responses to threads that have been idle for 2 years or more require moderator approval."

When you look at the main forum index, all the forums are listed. When you look at the 2nd column, all the most recent posts in the subforums are listed. The #1 post on the right side is almost always the "banned/suspended users" thread. I agree that the announcements are on top... but can we please "hide" the banned/suspended users thread? Since there is a lot of banning going on (with all the spammers and trolls), or because few other announcements are made, this is almost always the most recent post. Therefore, it is visible at the top of the main forum index. But the fact that yet another troll was banned is not interesting - it should not receive any attentio…

I receieved an apology from Truedeity. The nature of the apology is not important, howsoever, the conversation between us i feel is important to help me understand the true nature of this forum. The reply went a bit like this: ''That's truely ok. I accept your apology -- i just want you to be more aware of what others might be saying here. But that may derogatory, because right now i am having my own displeasure with people here continuously asking me to back up the scientific claims here i make with some kind of evidence, and this gets tiring. It's impossible to qoute everything one ever learns in this place. If it was possible, one would need a record of everth…

just a comment on the placement of your "banned/suspended users" thread most likely it's the first post people will see when visiting your site + it will give the impression of a repressive forum - it's up to you whether you want to give that impression also, as i've said elsewhere, the introduction thread is well hidden and should be given more prominence e.g. stickied in the "Announcements" part of the forum

Lyme disease is the fastest spreading vector borne disease in the US and is also very rampant in Europe. Unfortunately the CDC western Blot test is not very accurate. The insurance companies are following guidelines by the IDSA - http://www.idsa.org - (Infectious Disease Society of America) in order to deny coverage. However, the Attorney General of CT has filed an anti-trust against the IDSA and has requested that they review their guidelines because of a possible conflict of interest of members on the committee that wrote the guidelines. Lyme literate doctors are being persecuted by their peers for trying to treat chronic Lyme disease sufferers. There is at this tim…

That we have a longer amount of time allowed to alter a thread. I think we must have something like a one-day period before the ability to do so is expired. ((Mods - i need to have the ability to change my thread in physics, or i can't perfect it)) Tsadi - cheers

There seems to be an issue since you upgraded to the latest version of vBulletin. I've noticed the exact same issue on another forum which also just upgraded. Here is an example. In this thread, there are 374 posts: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6390&page=19 However, when looking at the summary of that thread from the Astronomy and Cosmology forum page: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=15 ... it shows 385 Replies. This is causing the system to show 20 pages within the thread, even though there are only 19. So, you click the 20, and nothing happens, it directs you back to the same page you're on (pag…

What is the current state of the SFN hazmat policy in accordance with biology and chemistry? I noticed a couple people locked some threads recently that seemed legit, but I can understand why. When's the last time everyone around here talked about the hazmat policy?

If anyone is interested, here goes: it is obviously impossible to have a free conversation here. I have witnessed the (alleged) appalling abuse of people here. Einstein would never survive this forum, nor anyone genuinely able to discover hitherto unrecognised secrets of the natural world; so it seems. The problem may partly come from what has happened in the university physics world itself; where ego, status, self-importance, "hero-worship" etc. etc. result in an output of repressed over-subservient-to-authority graduates and under-graduates whose native talents have been firmly squashed. It is very sad. The only way to rescue this forum, is to make it fa…
