We've had a spate of discussion recently where the conversation has strayed all over the place, making it exceedingly difficult to follow the discussion and sometime choking the dialogue that was supposed to be the focus of the thread. It's hard to resist answering a question that's asked; that's why many of us are here. And you may be like me, not really aware of which thread you're in once you're immersed on thinking about the post you are reading. To some extent that's expected, and we live with it. Sometimes a thread has run its course with regard to the initial question, and it's a natural flow to follow up, and the thread starter has a lot of leeway to direct the c…

Hello Swansont; This question has been bothering me for a while now, and I would have rather addressed it in a PM, but you stated that it should be addressed here--so here I am. While posting in the Speculations forum, I gave what I thought to be some very good advice for philosophers, who post in a Science forum, as follows: You responded with the following: The problem is that I don't think that my tactics earned me warnings--my temper did. This was when I did not have any tactics to solve the problem, so I fell back on simple manners. Which just encouraged the problem, so I hit the report button. The moderator's "help" is what actually blew my…

I'm not trying to become another target for the mods to attack here, but could you "moderators" & some long-term members take it a bit easier on some of the not so scientifically minded individuals that probably just come to these forums to post questions about something... Considering they probably got confused with the term "speculation" and thought it meant you can come into this section to post things that don't have any theories or studies backing them up. I believe they are more so just wanting to post their own "theory" or curious thoughts to the more educated & informed people residing in the forums for their feedback on the particular question... …

I cannot insert a formula in the text of the topic, though the formula is typed correctly, for example: [latex] \frac {d^2r}{dt^2}=-k_0\,k_1{\left(\frac {d\phi}{dt} \right)}^2r=-\frac {m}{{\Delta}^3 m }\frac {\Delta x^3_0}{r^3}{\left(\frac {d\phi}{dt} \right)}^2r =-{\left(\frac {d\phi}{dt} \right)}^2\frac {1}{{\rho}_s}\frac {m}{r^2}\qquad (11) [/latex] In this message all right, but in the text of my theme it is not working.

What I would like is to have access to a totally formulated physics application. Imagine if you want to know the answer to something you type in the word of what you want to find and selection of formulas show up and you choose which one you intend to use. Then it goes through the quantities you need to operate that chosen formula - type them into the appropriate fields and when enough information has been given the formula calculates the answer and along side the answer is the expression written in LaTex that can be cut and paste into a forum discussion. Dream to good to be true? Can anyone see what improvements should be designed into the application? A t…

Hi. Sometimes I see a way to grade the topic -or question- (about the quality/interest of the initial post, not the responses) somewhere on the screen. Some times does not show. Where and how works ?

Hey there. Some of you may recognise me from a couple of other science forums, I thought I'd stretch out a little and join here as well, but it turns out I already have an account on here from years ago. It's so old, I don't even remember what email address I used back then. I don't really want to be a "sockpuppet", so I was curious as to what I should do? Is it possible to merge this account with my old one, or will it be acceptable for me to start afresh? My previous account on here is under the name Transdecimal.

Under the scenario of whereby I have just posted on a thread, and I choose to post again soon, when it is still possible to edit the first post, the second post always gets added onto the end of the first post. Is this the only way to post the second post, or can I post it separately? I find I run the risk of having added onto it and someone having replied to it in the mean time, also I like to use multiple posts when replying to multiple members.

Editing a post after a reply can, sometimes, be somewhat dishonest, especially when the edit makes the reply appear overzealous. I do appreciate that editing can be necessary but in cases such as this, where the original was "I bet nobody here can work it out. I DID" (paraphrased). Should it be allowed? Maybe it’s problematic, technically, but surely it’s reversible.

I think it would be great that these features exists within each of our user space, they can be made public so people can see what your currently working on or follow your progress. Also i think it would make the forum more inclusive in the sense that people can get involved and help if they wished. To be honest im about to make an action plan and gantt chart for pattern recognition (broad) and pattern recognition within timeseries. Is the captain the main programmer? Theres probably generic templates for all 3 of these items implemented in php/js ?

Over the years, we've had many stances on discussing creationism. Our latest: we've successfully rebutted all those tired old arguments ("If we came from monkeys, why do we still have monkeys?"), and seen so little success, so now we just link those folks to TalkOrigins.org, where all the scientific information to correct their honest misunderstandings lies waiting in a single place. However, it's been pointed out recently by a Member Reported Post that we have an obligation to continue to discuss these topics rationally, calmly, and with rigor. If we don't, people who need this knowledge may not get it from places like TO. We have them here, asking questions. Whether…

If no one feels offended or angry or threatened by evobulgarevo -- a masquerade that some unoffendable members seem determined to uphold -- I'm wondering how to explain his ever-growing and prodigious pile of -1 you're-a-bad-boy rep points, which, although hasn't yet attained the dizzying heights of my own, is beginning to cause me some concern over the possibility of being usurped from the diabolical throne. Just a few words to the rotten new kid on the block then... I had to go through exactly the same song-and-terpsichore when I first joined the site a couple of months ago, evo. A significant number of our members ARE -- and never mind their denials to the con…

I've previously re-introduced my participation in this forum under the philosophy section. (I'll edit later to link this here.) My concern about this area is that it diminishes the intent of people's inquiry into ideas without granting "charity" to the poster regardless of their actual intents. I find that this section diminishes the sincerity of those who come here who actually have value but may simply need the reflective support of others here to help to take their ideas seriously with respect to their perspective. I recognize that some may actually be intending to act in purposeful means to defeat the integrity of science or this site, but believe that unless such…

For the last few days I have been getting my antivirus blocking some attacks from the above IP when clicking on some posts in the last 24 hour list. This happens about one time in 10 and does not happen anywhere else.

Are you denying that the linked thread is yours? Or that it was closed? Or that when you reappeared you specifically mentioned that you had previously posted here (so you obviously had not forgotten about the thread)? The way things work here is that if the staff closes your thread, you don't get to re-open the discussion, unless that option is specifically mentioned. (Otherwise what's the point of closing a thread)

I think only Cowards give motivated negative Clicks on Posts without any rhyme or reason ! To avoid this bad trend those who give negative Clicks must be shown with the reason behind it. Then it will be a fair game and at least one can make out who is a friend or an enemy ! For the same reason I have reset my friends list and will wait for anyone to add me as a friend as against my adding friends which I did earlier ! Also, I do remember those who had not accepted my invite earlier and those who had removed themselves from the list. I don't believe in forcing anyone. Perhaps I might still have some courageous friends standing up for me !

Is it any wonder people put speculative ideas in this forum when it has the word "Theoretical" in its title?
