Ethics

Discussion of ethical topics relating to science, medicine, religion, and so on.

I don't understand it. Apparently it's a bad thing. Some examples that i've come across are: A kid who wanted to dress up like his favourite sport star. The sport start is black and the kid is white so he 'blacked up'. A white guy with dreadlocks. A black women took gross offence to this and challenged him. Got accused of it myself while performing a lion dance on Chinese New Years (she peaked under the lion). Could people explain why any of these are offensive (preferably someone offended by these, or other examples).

We are part of this human species. As a sane human, what is your impression to the human society nowadays interms of ethical perspective. IS it advancing or degrading? Does it developing or mis-developing. Does new ideologies help it to become better or make it more worse? There are ideologies of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Does the ideologies of today is better than yesterday or vice versa?? Response are very much welcome to cultivate a wholesome clarity with regards to this question of our humanity.. Thank you..

  3. After Apple's shing-dig with their government, the UK government wants Whatsapp et al to do the same. Does isolated incidents, such that occurred recently in London, justify wholesale, unimpeded surveillance of everything that we, the public, do? This is more of a philosophical/ethical question but this event and the Apple one could be points of reference. The UK must be equal to N. Korea, in surveillance terms already, with the amount of cameras placed everywhere here. i feel the government won't stop until they have access to everything and can see everything. Is that the mark of a free cduntry?

  4. Hey all I am a student studying A'levels and this is my first post. Recently I have been reading up about the usage of stem cells in research and some of the ethical issues that come with it. In this thread I specifically want to discuss whether using stem cells to create human chimeras is an ethical practice. This involves taking stem cells (models have successfully used IPSCs) to create a chimera; a hybrid of a creature. The purpose of this would be to grow human organs within another creature which could then be harvested and transplanted into a human potentially solving the current organ supply crisis. Of course there are still many limitations before it becomes a…

  5. I have a few reasons for wanting to know: to take pride in hard work; to know the company's culture, attitudes of superiors and recruiters. Regarding sustainability I could only find articles published on news sites that may be politically biased and/or paid off. I would prefer government data.

An AI does not possess the sensitivity and sense of responsibility towards humanity. Relegating important and Life changing decisions to AI is a disaster. We humans are connected with each other by a single chord : we have failings and we Experience. None of this is possible for an AI. It does not "experience" the world. It only has "knowledge". Any decision taken without having experience is disaster. I want a full discussion on merits and demerits of AI. Please avoid links.

  9. do you believe the death penalty is wrong and should not be done? I do and I thought everyone I know agrees. I think its wrong for a couple reasons, one we don't know what kind of a punishment we are giving these criminals and another is we cant undo it. we dont know what kind of punishment these people are getting because we dont know enough about the after life. there was a study where people partially died and they all reported seeing a white light but that's all we know do far about it, they can either be getting a worse punishment in the afterlife they can be stabbed with swords for a while or they can go into another world and kill more people and get away with it…

Long before when abraham lincoln knew whats westernization, it was in years 1980s perhaps when people rided on horsebacks. So some people had american new yorker dreams. Then as bombay india too had its dreams, so nowdays that world has passed away time phase. And nowdays a newly hybrid world is created. Like cross culture of american indian, as many indians now can move to and fro even settle in USA which some years back in 1988s were not even a distant possibility. But this is hyped not in a total sense as indians again move to their roots as who they really were. So funny nowdays i tune into tv and see the camera used lenses in some food programs are of american origin…

  11. Every time I turn on the television something horrible happens some far away country. I was just thinking, is there much benefit that watching the news does? Does it do more harm than good? e.g. desensitizes people to terrorism and other atrocities I have given up watching the news for a few years now and feel happier. A lot of people don't have any good reason to watch the news but like to watch television as their form of entertainment. It is like participating in the Gladiator battles in Romes many centuries ago. My question, is it ethical to watch the news today and do nothing? I choose to not watch the news but for those that do what's…

We live in the world which is full of different aspects of life. Such aspects are social, individual, philosophical, religion, scientifical, etc. so many aspects. We use different ideologies that serves as our life-meaning, that we fail to hear our inner voices.... Wars, famine etc. that we all know are negative waves of times. But others say it is not negative, it is just the flow of nature... What I want to affirm now is that there are ethical values which are innate to us, e.g. conscience...

I'm getting close to losing faith in the future of our species. Living in Texas, I've met more than a few people who flat out refuse to investigate evidence that contradicts their world view. . 1. I'm acquaintances with an anti-vaccination advocate. No matter how much evidence, reasoned argument, or consequentialist rhetoric I provided, the final exchange from her was "Neither of us are willing to change our position. I will not be responding to this or any other threads with you concerning vaccines." I can't agree to disagree. If I'm wrong, I'm fucking WRONG. I would hope to any given deity that someone would care about me enough to correct me. I can't comprehend how s…

There are people in this world who have big names, but their deeds are malicious. I think with a big name comes moral responsibiity to keep your reputation intact. I have found out though that big names use their big names to get away with everything. I saw a movie Page Three in which a child molestor gets away with the crime because he is founder of a reputed newspaper organisation. The point of discussion is : Is it alright to use your weight(big name) for committing atrocity over a minor matter?

  16. The radicalisation of modern science is an important ethical issue. I think we should not let the Internet become a elite tool to enforce, control, and moderate experimental research based on unilateral ideology. For example the radicalisation of geoengineering is a idea which should be discussed freely to identify the risks and consequences of this classified activity. When evidences are not provided by the author of a posting, I guess its pretty easy to use Google and search without harassing the author of false claims. Furthermore, threats are not welcome as formal method to provide any feedback on a post. I guess civilism applies also to "moderators" of the forum.

  17. So I came across a nice quote of Hemingway in another thread posted by dimreepr: There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow men. True nobility lies in being superior to your former self. - Ernest Hemingway This got me thinking about the intellectual snobbery I have seen in science. I quite often have seen and come across people who disregard other peoples ideas without even considering them. I am not talking about absurd ideas, but feasible, genuinely thought out solutions to situations. It also seems to be (when I have seen it) that these same people will prove a point that has no benefit to either the advancement of the conversation or a genuine const…

My grandfather used to say : If you have lost money, you have not lost anything. If you have lost health, you have lost something. If you have lost character, you have lost everything. I have managed to defeat myself number of times. Problem is I came to know late that one should have patience and perseverence to deal with people. All is lost only by your actions. Your actions speak louder than words. I have also learned that one should try to preserve what one has, rather than squandering oneself in bad times. What have you learned from your defeats?

  19. I'm just curious. Given the importance of knowledge to ethical decision making, I thought it would be an interesting question. What area of knowledge would lead to people becoming more efficient and/or making better decisions in the world? Please make your case. Please note that knowledge means scientific knowledge and not any pseudoscience that may happen to be associated with that field. Moderators, feel free to edit my poll choices if you do not like them.

Before puberty everybody is able to cope with his/her questions. Post puberty a new dimension is added to the child. He is drawn out(???) and begins to know the world with his senses. His appetite for experiences increases. His expectations are through a viel of intimacy. When they are not met he/she cannot cope as he/she would have pre puberty period. Does your gender reality cloud your judgement?

I posted a link to my blog earlier, but it was removed, so I'm posting the contents of the post here: "During the writing of my thesis I came across several international institutes which do research on the use of gene selection to get rid of genetic diseases and to improve the physical body. I was very impressed by some institutes like CyprusIVF, but decided to connect my studies to my fascination with the east and go to the South-Korean institute: Demetra. This particular organisation is not only focused on gene selection to create a healthier new generation, but also on improving the current generation. They have made…
