Ethics

Discussion of ethical topics relating to science, medicine, religion, and so on.

It's funny how much people have forgotten that baseball is just a game and that players don't care about their fans. If suddenly you find yourself in a real tight situation in life, do you honestly believe that Aaron Judge will come to the rescue? I like baseball and respect talented people but that's about it. Aaron Judge was offered 300 million for 8 years and said no. He's going to be 31. Not enough cash, Aaron? So, leave the Yankees. I don't care.

  2. I think todays jury verdict will have and already is having an impact on how we perceive victims of domestic abuse especially in the main stream media. The shift has been already seen in the last weeks during the trial, Amber Heard getting stripped of her role in Aquaman 2 and Johny Depp getting a role proposal in the new Sherlock Holmes movie. The 15 mln dollars she has to pay for defamation seems a nice adition to JD case but certainly the main gole has been achieved by the Johny Depp team besides that. What do you think?

Being in science forum i think we all agree that the more weight you put in the airplane the bigger is the cost to travel. The question is it right to make prices by seat or by weight ? Here it's an example of how much fuel is using the airplane based on weight of passangers. If companies would charge by weight some passangers could feel there is a discrimination, if we they charge by seat some people dosen't like to pay a flat price knowing they should pay less. What do you think?

The definition of justice I prefer says that - justice is to constantly and permanently impart to each one what is deserved - Is it just when only one judge of thousands decides to free/reverse/pardon someone accused of a crime ? Implies that justice is subject to personal opinions, not a set rule that fits consensus.

Greetings. Is there intrinsic value (not given by humans) to different species ? Which is more valuable ? A mouse or a rabbit ? A sardine or a shrimp ? A camel or a donkey ? A watermelon plant or a maize plant ? A bee or a wasp ? A vulture or a seagull ? Or are all lives the same value, be it a hummingbird or a crab ?

I think like many other ethical questions, this question is not as simple as it sounds. Firistly, to declare my position, I don't believe anything is objectively right or wrong. The ethics, to me, come from our situation in society, and our evolution as social mammals. But in light of the human condition, is torture ever right? (and religion doesn't really have an answer, George Bush and the Spanish Inquisition come to mind) Imagine an innocent toddler has been abducted by a couple of pedophiles, and you have one in captivity, and he knows where the other is keeping the child, but he won't tell. Forgetting the legal and practical issues, if you had…

  7. Hi! I didn't read the topic, it was really long. I wish to hit the problem, that ethic is not logically understood. Ethics are only intuitivemotional thoughts. Can this be true? Like science can study that cell in brain correlates to certain thing. But being loving as the goal of life, is intuitivemotionalthought and can't be studied methological way. I think arts are also like that. You can say that we have hermeneutical epochs, but cant logially study why tragedy is overally humane in painting. Please, argue against. I wish to know modern philosphy.

  9. Why or why not? Let's say I'm an employer or a decision maker for college admissions; I am legally bound to not discriminate based on race, religion, nationality, gender, disability, age, sexuality, parental status and in some places, pregnancy. What is to stop me from deciding only rich people can work for me? What is to stop me from rejecting the college application of a poor person, based on prejudices I may have against the poor in general. Ought I to be penalized if I ultimately make a decision on who gets a job; on who was able to afford an expensive suit for an interview and looked more 'elite' than somebody that can only afford an ill fitting…

I have a query is the undermentioned ethical or unethical? Once upon a time. A long time ago. A little small state took on a very big state. To everyone’s shock the little state won. The small state had a trick up its sleeve. Read Mirage 2000.A new guy is now on the block. Enter the MIG. Define Problem Ukraine has two wishes. The first a no fly zone. The second MIG’s. War study academics ranging from Kings College London to Cornell University counsel against the first. Ukraine (and us) should listen. These guys have spent lifetimes studying the subject. They know. Poland does have MIG’s. It might be bad for Poland to provide. Possible solution Fro…

In this thread I would like to explore the legal and ethical basis of pandemic (or public health in general) related restrictions of human rights. I will focus on human rights as outlined by the universal declaration of human rights https://www.un.org/en/about-us/universal-declaration-of-human-rights as well as the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural rights https://www.ohchr.org/en/professionalinterest/pages/cescr.aspx. Specifically Article 12 of the covenant is important here: In a specific comment the office of the high commissioner for human rights outlined that: In other words, they see a close connection between these r…

For a long period in human history, Justice was hard to come by - the lack of forensic science and modern methods of catching a killer, meant many crimes would go undetected Hence the wild, wild west where matters were settled with a gun rather than the law - but that is Vengeance, not Justice It is in such times that Gods and Heaven and Hell were invented - the criminal would get "Justice" ie torture and brutality in hell We still see this in some primitive countries where criminals are tied up and lashed, thieves having their hands cut off etc And of course Hollywood LOVES vengeance - the "Kill Bill" move genre where the hero or heroine gets hurt in …

  13. We are all bombarded with news feeds of Racism here in the US and the rest of the world - and of course there are other kinds of discrimination as well, Sexism stands out to me Minorities never fail to lecture us that we should treat everyone equally - that a human being matters, not his skin color or gender But what if a Minority were to find itself as the majority? Would they behave any differently? The shocking answer is a big NO! I am a minority here in the US - from India & I have had my share of discrimination. But when I go back to India, now I am the majority. First of all, no country is perfect, there is no country where a minority does not fee…

  14. Firstly, I'm the kind of guy who steps on bugs, not around them. If there's a bug in my house; I don't "rescue it." I squash it, then flush it. So, that's my very non-objective starting off point on the subject, and I just want to be upfront about that. With that said, on to the meat and potatoes: Over the course of time I have noticed a small number of people who immediately dislike it when I step on bugs, with varying degrees of distaste. Some examples: I'm at a restaurant and a creepy looking spider is crawling on the floor near my seat, so I quietly slide my foot over and crunch it. Then someone at the table goes: "that was mean" Or, a bee lands on my glass …

The existence of Life on Earth is the only problem faced by life on Earth, discuss. I used to be a tree-hugging hippy, at least by my current values, life is beautiful, biology is fascinating. But then I realised that the higher order of complexity; the "balance", between good or bad, the great interconnection on all life on Earth, has no value. I argue that animal antinatalism; reducing the amount of animal birth to prevent poor welfare, is legitimate biology. Conservation is considered to be legitimate biology despite being a philosophy; it is an attempt at finding a biologically accurate version of morality to apply to wild animals, and I argue that …

What are some of the barriers to providing equal opportunity to every one, within academia? Seeing a lot of ignorant and entitled posting lately, which doesn't even make a point to address this. It's a shame really, a lot of discouraging and disparaging comments being made about people, who through no fault of their own, simply are not offered the sort of education their disparagers have allegedly had and have no means of getting it.

  17. I was reading this interesting article about the ethics of so called "tactical fouls" in sports and the article brings up one specific example from the 2010 soccer World Cup quarter final in which Uruguay is about to concede a goal that would eliminate them from the World Cup and, in a last ditch attempt to stop it, Luis Suarez (who is not a goal keeper and therefore not permitted to handle the ball) very blatantly reaches his hands out and stops the ball. His calculation was that this was the end of extra time and the penalty for handling the ball blatantly like that (a red card and being sent off out of the game) was far lesser than the downside of conceding the go…

  18. Firstly, by 'good' I mean conducts itself ethically. There are a few aspects to address with this question. Answers ought to take into account; 1. How this platform monetises and to what extent it does so? Does it just cover it's operating costs and staff man hours or does it make a profit? To extend this question, what does it do with this profit? 2. What does it do with users data? Does it have ads driven by the selling off of marketing data? Another question buried there, is who owns data pertaining to an internet user? The user or the data gatherer? 3. How does it manage moderation and censorship? Bare minimum adherence to the law or sets of…

Recently a paper was published in Cell confirming the successful creation of human / monkey chimera embryos. Source: https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(21)00305-6 Introduction: Interspecies chimera formation with human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) represents a necessary alternative to evaluate hPSC pluripotency in vivo and might constitute a promising strategy for various regenerative medicine applications, including the generation of organs and tissues for transplantation. Studies using mouse and pig embryos suggest that hPSCs do not robustly contribute to chimera formation in species evolutionarily distant to humans. We studied the …
