  1. Just musing about the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence, I wonder if AI programming can ever take a machine to the point that it would be able to appreciate the sounds of a waterfall, or a gently murmuring stream or be able to appreciate the works of Wagner. Or to be happy when the UK win gold medals in the Olympics. In short, can our emotions ever be felt and appreciated by a computer, and could it then make mistakes based upon emotion?

  2. Many renowned scientists believe this event is all but inevitable and that the consequences of it are so far reaching that it will change our World profoundly. We will be living in the post human era if we manage to survive at all. Others argue it will go a very long ways in solving mankind`s most difficult problems and may even lead to human immortality. This event is predicted by many to occur within 5 to 30 years. Many of these scientists I am refering to are some of the most res…

Hey guys- So I've been pretty bored so far this summer and have been dicking around on the internet when I came upon a really neat trick. Turning an mp3 into a png. Check it out, I've added links to 4 different png's for you to try. CONVERTING AN MP3 TO A PNG: 1. Open your mp3 in a sounds editor and reduce the quality so that the file is smaller than whatever websites file size limit is that you want to upload to. (completely optional) 2. Save the file as an mp3, then rename it to "XYZ.raw" (you must have "Hide extensions for known file types" unchecked in the folder options to do this) 3. Open the file in photoshop, and save it as a PNG. CONV…

  6. I am stuck on a lab assignment where I need to use a version of ubuntu in VMware Player to write some .c files that will use a buffer overflow vulnerability to generate a shell that has root privileges. I can only use the following 2 files: stack.c #include <stdio.h> int bof(char *str) { char buffer[12]; //BO Vulnerability strcpy(buffer,str); return 1; } int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { char str[517]; FILE *badfile; badfile = fopen("badfile","r"); fread(str, sizeof(char),517, badfile); bof(str); printf("Returned Properly\n"); return 1; } exploit.c #include <stdlib.h> #include <stdio.h> #inc…

I'm trying to set up a guestbook on my site. I'm copying the same files that I set up on the aol-files.com guestbook. I'm not too knowledgable about CGI though, so its not working out too well. Here is what I have set up: When I login with ws_ftp i go to the main folder it has the folders .session logs web in web, i have my index.html, etc. so i made two folders in there. guestbook - which has all the guestbook files and cgi-bin - i just stuck my guestbook.pl in there in the guestbook folder, i have my main guestbook file, that includes the line ...action="../cgi-bin/guestbook.pl" method="POST" which should take it to the guestbook.pl, r…

Just recently I checked my computer for spyware and found... 116 spybots!!! (and a partridge in a pear tree) Seriously, though, where do they come from? I hardly ever download anything. And, my stupid firewall claims it kills them. How can they get access to my internet without alerting it?

  10. Sorry for the double post, didnt know which section to post in. Hello, First i would like to point out i am 16 years of age, with many different ideas... and a very large mental capacity. First i would like to start off with what TRON is... based on the NEWER movie if some do not know. Here is the Trailer to the newer movie Alright now onto the more advanced stuff. In the movie they used a lazer to blast the human into "the GRID" as it would be called, but is more into the terms of a type of CyberSpace Now here is where i got to thinking. it has already been confirmed that scientists are working on things like molecular Transportation …

Hi ! i'm trying to get my head around this scenario i've come up with a class diagram but i'm not sure it's correct if anyone can have a look at it pls. N.B: my class diagram is attached aswell. SCENARIO: A local book shop that has approached you to build them a computerised stock control system and point of sale system. The shop sells a large number of books which are classified into genres: Non-Fiction (Science,Mathematics, Humanities, Languages, Arts), Science Fiction (SciFi, Steampunk, Apocalyptic, Time Travel), Crime Fiction (Legal, Spy, Whodunnit, Suspence) and Literary Fiction. Each book has a title (e.g. “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”) …

  13. Sure, desktops may SEEM cheaper than laptops, but keep in mind that those prices only include the tower, unless the store is having a special. You also have to buy a monitor (a good $100 to $200), a keyboard and mouse ($15 each, for a total of $30), and a set of speakers (another fifteen bucks). This raises the price of a desktop computer, for even basic functionality, by a good $245. These "peripherals" typically come standard on a laptop - physically built into the core laptop itself. So, all else being equal, which is cheaper, overall? a desktop + keyboard + mouse + monitor + speakers, or a laptop?

  15. I just re-installed Windows, downloaded a few programs (itunes, firefox, google earth, spybot, and adaware) and updated. I was looking through the processes to get rid of the usuals at start up, like quicktime. I ran into an odd one: crypt32chain, so I googled it. Everyone says that it's spyware, on a brand new install?

I am about to finish my MSc in computing science, and I am doubting whether I should take PhD. I want to finish PhD because I love the subject and also because it will help me immigrate to Canada (I am a foreign student at my university). However at the same time I'm little worried that having PhD will lower my job options after the grauation (due to overqualification). I know that there are lots of computer jobs out there that specifies their minimum requirement as BSc in computer science...What are the chance for a person with PhD to get those BSc jobs? If I tell my employer that I will be satifsfied with a (relatively) low wage and that I will not run aw…

Hello everybody. There are so-called camera lens detectors. Link for reference: (the example of camera lens detector) The question is this: is it possible to construct a smart and intelligent hidden camera (with the respective hardware and software means) which will be able to detect such detectors, recognize theirs presence and automatically mask lens system, effectively preventing its detection? You see, a friend of mine wants to buy such thing to use for example in hotels, but I believe that such purchase is unnecessary. Any ideas? Thanks for your time!

The question is, what is information? And how would you measure it? In my opinion, information is any data at all, and measured in bits (or a similar system). However, some data can be compressed. Because the same data can be reconstituted from a potentially smaller amount of data, it makes sense to count the smallest amount possible as the amount of information, with the compressibility factor a measure of the redundancy of the information. A subtype of information would be communication-information. Messages depend on the context of the situation, so what would be information to one person may be gibberish to another. Also, this gives another way to measure the …

  25. Hello, i bought a laptop for the first time in my life, and i was wondering, since laptops are so small, heat is pushed directly on the plastic of the laptop and i know that plastic if heated up can become toxic, what amount of heat (in temperature celsius) makes a laptop "lenovo t43 (refurbished)"'s plastic toxic? i usually get to 53-55-57 celsius for the processor ingame and for the hard disk 41c. (the laptop is refurbished)
