One scenario i commonly see at my university(possibly goes on in other universities also): Person 1: So what are you studying? Person 2: I want to go medical. Person 1: oh, what classes are you taking? Person 2: ::says various courses:: And im taking chem. Person 1: oh, how do you like it Person 2: i HATE chem It is possible to go pursue a medical career with a resentment for chemistry? Chemistry is so important to medicine and it seems most of the undergrads want to go medical because of financial stability for the job. Do you think it's possible for them to still carry on with medicine with no desire for chemistry and just "tough" it out? I…

What are the effects of Seroquel on the five sleep stages and REM ? Does someone get stuck in a certain stage? Does one ever reach REM? I googled it a little bit but didn't turn up with the best results. I'm currently researching REM but this is more because of my interest in Seroquel as a medicine.

Hey! Just wondering if anyone knew why it is that citrate intake shouldn't be combined with medicine intake? For instance: When / if you take Link tablets against ulcers you shouldn't drink fruit juices as well, since this will cause an elevated uptake of aluminium (that's partially what Link is made of). or... If you take Felodipine (against high bloodpressure also known as Arterial Hypertension) it specifically says NOT to drink GRAPE juice. Anyone know why? I suppose it has to do with the citrate-concentration, but I don't know. How does one harm the other I wonder. Thankful for any answers// Tilda

Hey guys. How long do the typical effects of food poisoning last? On Thursday I went to McDonalds for lunch and got some chicken nuggets. About an hour later, I started feeling VERY nauseous and the intensity just progressed at an alarming rate. About 2.5-3 hours after eating the chicken, I began throwing up quite violently and without any way to stop it. My ribcage and chest muscles are now killing me from all that throwing up, and I've felt VERY weak. So weak, in fact, that I've fallen down twice just trying to walk a few feet towards the bathroom. I have NEVER felt this ill before. Only now, about 26 hours after eating the tainted food, have I gotten enough ene…

if anorexics don't eat anything and become really thin, then why do bulimics "maintain" body weight instead of end up the same as anorexicx when they purge out everything they've just eaten? doesn't purging pretty much take out all the calories that they once consumed.

My tonsils are a bit weird in appearance.. they have a few shallow circular holes in them, in which this gunky white stuff accumulates. I can dislodge the stuff with a Q-Tip, and it smells absolutely horrible, like rotting leather. I try gargling mouthwash but the next morning I wake up with a painful sore throat. In fact, the only illnesses I ever seem to have involve the throat region. What's wrong with my tonsils?

I was diagnosed with Pertussis several weeks ago after a coughing fit left me with 3 fractured ribs. I can't seem to find many research-based articles about the possiblity of re-infection during the long drawn out course of the disease. BTW, I'm going on week 10 since I was infected. My dad is at week 12. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I heard on the radio years back when viagra first came out that the three scientist involved in creating it had one the Noble Peace Prize. The prize wasn't for Viagra it was for the study on how the medicine relaxed or contracted blood vessels. Medicine is not my field of study, so keep it simple. My question is could the use of the ingredients of Viagra be used to treat hyper tension or relieve pressure in the eyes in illnesses such as glaucoma? I have heard that it could but that is not the kind of information you get when you type Viagra into a search engine. Thanks for the info.

I remember around a month ago I woke up, and the oddest thing happened. The entire underside of both of my arms were covered with hives, and it seemed that the entire day I had constant attacks of narcolepsy. I pretty much couldn't leave my bed without spontaneously falling asleep. And the times that I did manage to get up and stand, I felt as if though all my blood was rushing downward, and for some reason I felt quite cold. What exactly happened to me?

{mod pleese move this if it belongs elsewhere} This may just be med student syndrome (though i am technically/and literally not at medical school just studying medicine my self). But i am wondering anyways I seem to develop (more than habitably) "Obsessions" about many different things about a month ago it was did I accidentally leave AOL instant messenger up on the computer. I would totally freak out about it even if people told me (who where with me at the time) that I didn't this was reoccurring, Because of this "Obsession" I would feel the need to check it, that often meant doing things I really did not want to do like go home etc. From what i have read thi…

I know that diabetics often have glucose in their blood but it can't be absorbed into the tissues because of the lack of insulin or lack of insulin receptors..so why do diabetics carry around glucose with them for emergencies? If they haven't got insulin, eating glucose won't do anything... I'm obviously missing something!

I dont know much about this subject but i think i know more about it than the person i was arguing with. The other day in school this girl who takes the "child development" class was arguing to me saying "babies cant be fed water because they cant digest it and they will die". At that point i laughed. I dont think alot of parents feed babies water, but substitute it with milk, then i thought isnt milk the babies "food"? Thanks.

Congress is poised to pass legislation to allow government money to be spent of stem cell research with embryos provided from furtility clinics. These embryos would have to be expressly donated by their owners (parents) and would otherwise be distroyed as medical waste. The religious right is opposed to this and President Bush has said that he would veto such a bill. Is the potential for medical breakthroughs in diseases and birth defects great enough to override the concerns of the religious people in this country who oppose it? Or do we already have enough stem cell lines to work with.

As everyone does, I often stretch my shoulders and neck back and head a cracking sound...but often I feel tight in the sternum area and feel like i need to crack it. I do, it gives a little sound and it gives me the relief I was after. Does anyone else feel the need to do this sometimes? And what exactly is happening? I hope that makes sense!

When taking a shower is it a health hazard to breathe in steam, which may condense in the lungs, thereby drowning them and decreasing how well they take up oxygen? Furthermore, I've been told that steam from the shower can accelerate the wrinkling process, making you look much older than you really are. Can these problems, if they are problems, be fixed by having colder showers? How long should a normal shower be before it become bad for your health?

Hey, I need some help here. Recently I've gotten into riding my bike. Don't know why, just found it and started riding it and got hooked. But now I have this problem: it's getting more and more difficult each day. I try to do an intense, hilly ride one day, a few days of a more flat, easy workout and then back to the intense one and so on. But what I've found is, especially after the intense rides, it's a lot harder to ride the next day. I'm going to assume it's because I'm not eating right after a workout. I usually finish and drink a lot of water and then don't usually eat much (because the water is sort of filling). Is there anything I should eat special before and…

hey guys, I had eczema for a long long time until about a year ago when it stopped getting it. I was seeing a dermatologist, but not anymore. I have these dark patches on my skin where I used to scratch a lot (thats what my doc told me they were from). Will they fade over time? Or are they permanent? Any help would be pretty cool, just thought I'd find out

I've been increasingly concerned about my height ever since I read a scientitic article that explained how women are instinctually extremely discriminatory when it comes to male height. If I stand up for a long time my feet feel sore. I wonder whether the weight on my body pressing against the legs could actually compress the bones in my legs enough to make me shorter. If you sit down, the body weight from your upper body is not longer pushing down on your legs. So does standing up often make you shrink? Or is the effect negligible?
