Lung cancer or lung disease seems to be hardest to cure or treat. In chronic bronchitis, the airways that carry air to the lungs (bronchial tubes) get inflamed and make a lot of mucus. This can narrow or block the airways, making it hard for you to breathe. Emphysema. In a healthy person, the tiny air sacs in the lungs are like balloons. As you breathe in and out, they get bigger and smaller to move air through your lungs. But with emphysema, these air sacs are damaged and lose their stretch. Less air gets in and out of the lungs, which makes you feel short of breath. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in COPD is a lung disease that makes it hard to …

If ketones are showing in urine, does this mean protein, not fat is being metabolized? What is the reason ketones would be present if there was adequate fat intake? Carbs were low in the diet at the time, but I'm trying to make sense of the protein vs. fat scenario. Sugar was not an issue in the urine at the time of high ketones. I was told by a physician that most teenagers will test positive with ketones after not much food intake and after hours of exertion from sports, but I was concerned about a toddler. Is this true?

Usually in medical laboratories, the hormones are injected into the cells of human body using syringes. Does anyone knows any other latest technology delivering enzymes into our body cells? Does it necessary to deliver at high speed or at minimum speed is enough? Other than syringes what are the other ways doctors use?

Much has been said about the Germanwings co-pilot who coaxed the pilot out of the cockpit, so he could lock the door and crash the plane. What about his mental state? How often does a pilot, or bus driver, intentionally kill themselves AND their passengers? It seems like a severe hatred of other people, including himself. News report stated Andreas told his girl friend (or x girl friend?) that he was going to do something that will be remembered that will "change the system". What can this possibly mean? http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/31/world/europe/germanwings-copilot-andreas-lubitz.html?_r=0

Hello everybody and everyone... A December 2014 report about thyroid cancer saw 86 cases among 298,577 young people under 18 in the Fukushima prefecture. Lacking a reference report for Japanese people, I compared it with a French study http://www.invs.sante.fr/fr/content/download/7760/52112/version/1/file/bilan_cancer_thyroide.pdfpages 31-32 that saw 224 cases among 11 million French children under 14, that would extrapolate proportionally to 26ppm up to 18 years, or 8 expected cases amont 298,577 people. That discrepancy would be very significant, but The criteria of cancer may differ The populations differ genetically and culturally If I compare now with…

A blow below the belt is not only painful, but also potentially dangerous. If one talks about sports, testicle traumas most often occur among hockey players, football players and cyclists. Athletes face testicle traumas almost every day. And no wonder that professionals of big-time sports have various tumors of testicles that are considered to be quite rare pathology, occur more often than in other men. The risk increases if a man has the hereditary predisposition to the disease and uncured underdevelopment of testicles that is related to cryptorchidism. Therefore, it is very important to notice this trouble in boys in time and to perform operation. url removed is full ar…

Hello everyone I need a quick confirmation on something. (For those who might wonder: this is a question concerning the paper I'm writing on the differences in epidemiology of influenza type A(H1N1)pdm09 during the pandemic of 2009-2010, in Europe and Africa.) In an article, given is the estimated number of inhabitants in Rwanda: 10.4 million. Given is also that 494 cases of this influenza have been recorded between October 2009 and 31 May 2010 = 8 months = 2/3 years I was wondering if there is something that allows me to calculate the incidence rate during that period as follows, considering that everyone is at risk of contracting influenza: 8 months …

Hello to all, I do not have any background in medical or science field and therefor this question may sound rather naïve to you guys. I hope you would tolerate my ignorance and shed some light on something that has been in my mind for a long time. My understanding is the fastest transmission of nerve signals is about 268 miles per hour or just about 120m/s. The transmission of nerve impulses from the hair cells may be much lower than the figures mentioned here. Leaving that aside, let's take 120m/s as the speed of nerve impulses (SIC) from the ears hearing mechanism to the brain for the purpose of this question. Now, if sound waves travel at 340 m/s then when …

According to a university of Cambridge study twice as many people in europe are dying from inactivity rather than obesity. Where people feel that eating little and taking very little exercise makes them healthy because they look thin. Thin people also have higher risk of health problems as a result of being inactive and are less likely to feel the need to take exercise or be pressured into exercising. http://www.bbc.com/news/health-30812439

For those who don't know, ayahuasca is a medicinal beverage with a long history among the amazonian shamans of central and south america. It typically consists of two brews which can be taken separately (one after the other) or mixed together. The first is a brew made from simmering the MAOI containing vine Banisteriopsis caapi in warm water, and the second is made the same way (simmering in warm water) with any of a variety of N,N-DMT containing plants (psychotria viridis, diplopterys cabrerana, mimosa hostilis, etc.). The caapi is important because without an MAOI, the N,N-DMT containing plant will not be psychoactive. At the site www.ayahuasca.com, there is a quote…

Young scientists often get conflicting advice on how they should publish. Every generation of young scientists has to address similar questions: Should I publish several smaller papers or should I focus on one big paper with a high impact factor? What is the effect of my publication strategy on my career and the possibility to raise grant money? How important is my publication list for a non-academic career? An unshielded hydrogen nucleus covalently bound to an electron-withdrawing oxygen or nitrogen atom can interact with an unshared electron pair on another oxygen or nitrogen atom to form a hydrogen bond. Since water molecules contain both of these features, hydrogen bonding favors the self-association of water molecules into ordered arrays. Hydrogen bonding profoundly influences the physical properties of water and accounts for its exceptionally high viscosity, surface tension, and boiling point. On average, each molecule in liquid water associates through hydrogen bonds with 3.5 others. These bonds are both relatively weak and transient, with a half-life of about one micr…

Hello everyone, Why do you need to create an arterio venous fistula for haemodialysis? I don't understand how it makes a good access site for dialysis. Also when not performing dialysis, wouldn't this AV fistula be bad for the body. The deoxygenated and venous blood with all its wastes mixing with arterial blood due to fistula (I'm assuming due to higher pressure in arteries, arterial blood flows to veins not vise versa but still isn't it bad for arterial blood to get mixed with venous). Also in dialysis why should the blood be pumped back into the person, isn't their a way to filter it right at the start, pumping blood back would make the person more prone to infecti…

I've always known that I've had a peculiar problem with certain cognitive tasks. I am absolutely horrible at working with my hands, and my sense of direction is similarly atrocious. I consistently score in the 98%/99% percentile in all other aptitude tests and do remarkably well in all of my academic subjects, but for some reason there's something about taking things apart and putting them back together that leaves me clueless and embarrassed. Most of what I've read online suggests that this has to do with a deficiency in spatial reasoning. This didn't seem to make any sense to me, since I'm very, very good at maths including, even especially, maths such as geometr…

I recently had a conversation with a person who expressed that wealthy people are "immune" to many life threatening diseases. My antagonist used Steve Jobs as an example. He said that Steve Jobs could have survived if he used his wealth to gain proper treatment. Personally, I think money cannot guarantee your "immunity" against life threatening diseases as medicine has not advanced to that stage. What do you think?
