Hey all, I'm aware that this is not a drug forum and that drug related questions get frowned upon at times, but this is a question to which I want an honest answer from experts in the field, based upon empirical evidence, previous research and existing literature and not some pothead answer who's knowledge is based on street myths. I got sick a month ago, and two weeks later was diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis. I'm not sure if it's done the same way here as it is in other countries, but with me they tested for the amount of white blood cells in my body, which was found to be thrice the normal amount (I remember the number being 29000, I believe the unit wa…

How is the c supposed to be pronounced in words such as encephalitis and encephalopathy? I've always said them with a soft c, but have heard many use a hard c. Most other words with a c between an n and e have a soft c sound..eg. incest, ancestor, so why do people insist of using the hard c when saying encephalitis?? Doesn't make sense to me.

Hi: Burn victims must undergo a painful debridement of their wounds in order to prevent infection. Normally, they are given morphine and other non-anesthetic pain-killers. Sadly, this does not work. They still yell in pain during the operation, which is why they have to be housed seperately from other patients. Why aren't the burn patients given anesthesia [local or general] prior to the operation? Is there a safety issue with anesthetics? Thanks, Green Xenon

Greetings to all, Just joined this forum today. Perhaps someone can help me answer a question that I've been pondering for more than a decade. Here it is: The human eye is much like the lens of a camera, telescope or microscope. An image, as it passes through the lens, is projected onto the retina upside down and backwards. It is the brain's job to sort out and make sense of the image entering through the eye. Most doctors agree that newborn babies see everything upside down for a "period of time" - but no one really knows for how long. Since gravity determines "up" and "down", wouldn't the baby have to be able to at least hold it's head up to begin to sort things …

I've been increasingly concerned about my height ever since I read a scientitic article that explained how women are instinctually extremely discriminatory when it comes to male height. If I stand up for a long time my feet feel sore. I wonder whether the weight on my body pressing against the legs could actually compress the bones in my legs enough to make me shorter. If you sit down, the body weight from your upper body is not longer pushing down on your legs. So does standing up often make you shrink? Or is the effect negligible?

What with the current war on salt, I was wondering if a simple way to reduce sodium would be to just drink lots of water. As I understand it, it will reduce your electrolytes of which sodium is one of the major ones. What with all the people who are dehydrated it might have other beneficial side-effects, rather than the more dubious side effects "normal" drugs have.

Just wondering, what is the comparison between the effects? They could both possibly be used to treat the same illnesses. Knowing its less dangerous than alcohol is enough to make me think it is completely ridiculous not to legalize it. If you only use it say a two or three times a month, it wouldn't even have a significant effect on health from the somewhat damaging smoke. Probably nowhere near as deadly as fast food. I'm just trying to establish the degree of idiocy and hypocricy there is in this war against drugs, which i may agree with for harder drugs that are actually addicting, but if you legalized simple marajauna i think that people wouldn't care so much about tr…

I recently got into a pretty big debate with somebody on YouTube after I watched an episode of 'I Shouldn't Be Alive', in which a father and his 12-year-old daughter had gone camping in the Australian desert and their car broke down out in the middle of nowhere. I had demonstrated my incredulity that they had both left the house wearing jeans and sweatshirts (or some other long-sleeve clothing) even though it was something like 45 degrees Celsius out. I understand that it would help to protect you from the sun, but I know from experience, having been in similar temperatures while on vacation in Cuba, where I was often in nothing but a bathing suit and no shirt, and sunblo…

I have had this debate several times with many people. The only studies that I have seen that claim this seem to have been discredited. I would like to know peoples opinions on this matter and any scientific information that they might have.

One scenario i commonly see at my university(possibly goes on in other universities also): Person 1: So what are you studying? Person 2: I want to go medical. Person 1: oh, what classes are you taking? Person 2: ::says various courses:: And im taking chem. Person 1: oh, how do you like it Person 2: i HATE chem It is possible to go pursue a medical career with a resentment for chemistry? Chemistry is so important to medicine and it seems most of the undergrads want to go medical because of financial stability for the job. Do you think it's possible for them to still carry on with medicine with no desire for chemistry and just "tough" it out? I…

I got blood type AB, and I've read in some newspapers and publications online, about pros and cons of the AB bloodtype. Though please note I'm not talking about the japanese personality mumbo jumbo, or the "eat right for your blood type" scams, I'm talking about scientific and statistical experiments hinting of blood type actually having a relevance at certain health issues. From what I can gather, the good sides of blood type AB is: + Often very good protection from Cholera, and the Norwalk virus. Some bad sides are: - Risk of stroke, and various artery diseases are skyhigh(I've read values ranging from 20% to 40% higher than those with blood type O), bec…

I was watching an episode of the Atheist Experience the other day, and one of the hosts who identifies herself as a lesbian mother (her 'daughter' is biologically her partner's child through artificial insemination). It made me wonder whether or not it would be possible for medical science to allow artificial insemination in which, biologically, the resulting daughter would effectively have two biological mothers; or a mother and a female father if you prefer to think about it that way? What I'm basically asking is if it is possible to take a donar sperm and remove its X or Y chromosome, similar to how we are able to remove the chromosome from an ovum, and then insert…

As everyone does, I often stretch my shoulders and neck back and head a cracking sound...but often I feel tight in the sternum area and feel like i need to crack it. I do, it gives a little sound and it gives me the relief I was after. Does anyone else feel the need to do this sometimes? And what exactly is happening? I hope that makes sense!

I've always known that I've had a peculiar problem with certain cognitive tasks. I am absolutely horrible at working with my hands, and my sense of direction is similarly atrocious. I consistently score in the 98%/99% percentile in all other aptitude tests and do remarkably well in all of my academic subjects, but for some reason there's something about taking things apart and putting them back together that leaves me clueless and embarrassed. Most of what I've read online suggests that this has to do with a deficiency in spatial reasoning. This didn't seem to make any sense to me, since I'm very, very good at maths including, even especially, maths such as geometr…

How would one revive someone who was choked/strangled to death in a chokehold? Is manual CPR effective, when no help is available? Also, what are the consequences to the body/brain of having died/been revived from this, as opposed to, say, from a heart attack. Thanks. -D

Is there any knowledge of how barometric pressure effects the body, other then some "maybe it causes pain to increase"? The storm that is moving in has me so crippled I hate walking. I wouldn't call this pain, but weakness in my thigh muscles that is really uncomfortable, more like a really bad tired feeling that pain.

https://pagesix.com/2022/03/28/judd-apatow-says-will-smith-could-have-killed-chris-rock/ What is the probability that one slap could have caused someone to lose their balance, fall, and hit their head in a life-endangering manner? How does this compare to, let's say, every day risks like the risk of driving, or not-as-everyday risks like the risks of getting hit by lightning when standing outside in a thunderstorm?

I trust that there are many of you on this board who are in school and majoring in the sciences…especially if you want to get into medicine, and I am sure there are some of you that already are doctors, biologists, and medical researchers… Well I just wanted to get your opinion on something that I have been looking into for the past year and using myself. I am a 2nd year college student at the University of New Orleans and majoring in biology, and hopefully I will be getting into a premed program…but I am still undecided. Anyway, around the time I was 16, I started looking online for anything that could help me get rid of or help me fight a really annoying virus.…

Hi I'm not sure I'm in the right forum for this (perhaps the biology forum would've been better?) but it seems like there are a few discussions here about what is and isn't good for our health, so, here goes: I've been drinking milk regularly since I was a little girl. I Loooooove milk, I used to drink about 2-3 glasses (more or less) a day, sometimes more. Lately, I drink less (specifically since I don't quite like the milk in America, it tastes a bit 'plasticky' to me, but it's a matter of preference I guess). Recently, I poured myself a glass of milk at work and a friend of mine looked at me and exclaimed that milk is NOT actually healthy for us humans, th…

This seems to be an issue of much confusion, especially since I've heard many trying to claim that nicotine is in and of itself a carcinogen. As far as I can tell these are the primary carcinogens in cigarettes: Polonium-210 and Lead-210: Radioactive isotopes which emit ionizing alpha radiation, making them extremely mutagenic. They are present in chemical fertilizers enriched with phosphate and comes in the form of either soluble or insoluble compounds. The soluble compounds are removed from the body through natural processes, whereas the insoluable compounds remain in the lungs and bombard lung tissue with ionizing alpha radiation. According to this site: …

For those who don't know, ayahuasca is a medicinal beverage with a long history among the amazonian shamans of central and south america. It typically consists of two brews which can be taken separately (one after the other) or mixed together. The first is a brew made from simmering the MAOI containing vine Banisteriopsis caapi in warm water, and the second is made the same way (simmering in warm water) with any of a variety of N,N-DMT containing plants (psychotria viridis, diplopterys cabrerana, mimosa hostilis, etc.). The caapi is important because without an MAOI, the N,N-DMT containing plant will not be psychoactive. At the site www.ayahuasca.com, there is a quote…

There were some news messages recently that the amount of toxic products in our blood is rising. (some say risky, some within tolerance) I was thinking if blood donation would help reducing ANY unknown toxic in your blood. I did some simple math You can give about 10% of blood with pauzes of minimum 16weeks. 0.9^6=0.53 so in about 6*16weeks or 2years I would be able to cut the percentage of toxic producs in my blood in half. This is obviously assuming that there are no new producs added during that time and that they are present in my blood. Is the body itself cleaning your blood in some way? (I mean products that aren't suppose to be there, like some metal…

Ever wonder what its like, to hallucinate? Have you ever been on acid, or shrooms? If you would like to hallucinate and trip out, SAFELY, then i suggest you contribute to this experiment. I do not know if this is legal or illegal to post this, but if any mods out here are disturbed by this please tell me and i will remove this thread right away. Now, when i say "Hallucinogenic Drink", i mean not some fancy chemical reaction and atom bonding w/e. I mean EXPERIMENTING. Like, mixing drinks to other drinks to make a hallucinotory effect. Say you mix Pepsi with Red Bull (this is just an example it does not really work.) So, experimenters, be ready! Find any beverages…
