Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

My stand is that we tend to associate paranormal phenomena like ESP, deja vu, intuition etc with religion. There is no reason as to why they are connected. May be some people tap in to the "event horizon" naturally and are pre-disposed to experience such phenomena. It could be that even spirits and ghosts are actually dinizens of some inter-planetary "Hades", experiencing some dimension which we cannot comprehend. Though science refutes belief in gnomes, ghosts et al I think in the light of 21st century "enlightenment" we should look at this more subjectively. One conundrum, is why do we extrapolate these phenomena on some religious matrix? These coul…

For those interested I'd like to discuss the idea that, in at least one respect, and the one I'd like to concentrate on- religion behaves like a virus: because it spreads. It spreads from one host to another; it is an idea that can be put into a person's mind, and will end up in the mind of many others. It can be said to control the host for its own gain (to spread to more people), although it may sound foolish to suggest an idea can have its own motive or agenda- that is, to spread. It is much like a gene in that way, which again, cannot truly have a motive or agenda, but whose purpose is undeniably to replicate, and in the case of viral genes, to spread. Do you thin…

How do we believe? Is it chronological or are the elements of faith misplaced and anachronistic? I understand that :- a) Firstly we conceive an identity of belief in some entity real or otherwise b) Then we visualize this entity within our 4 dimensions of space and time (because that is as far as our imagination can stretch) c) Then we affirm this belief through more visual demonstrations of the same like symbols, habiliments etc. d) Then we aggregate with other similar individuals who think along the same lines e) Then we reaffirm our identity (which by now has transformed from individual to collective). f) Then we seek justification of ou…

Let see the movie 'NOAH" most in its sequel has been added, from the original TENET. it is more like a fun movie as it compared to an education for children about FAITH. First i thought it is a spectacular movie that narrated as it written originally and copied from the TENET or scriptures. But finally america is america ... still upholding american dreams, everything is just a business, and profit. maybe TENET or the truth on scriptures will make no profit for the producers, so it made. But don't we have to do some noble things in the world?

For me, I can understand everything absolutely. But after I heard the spirit for the gap, that is the gap as an accident. The accident becomes the true religious as I cannot understand and prove it. It is my Black Hole mind. As an example, it is the spirit connect everybody's mind together, but I am the only one not connected. I cannot prove it forever as Black hole. I think this accident theory makes the scientist sick and pain.

For those who seek the meaning of life This message is in two sections: 1. Right reasoning in seeking truth 2. Proof of God through: Science Archeology Predictions Unlocking the Mysteries to life In order to unlock the mysteries to life, a person needs to be teachable / correctable. Without constructive criticism or being teachable and open to receive knowledge, a person can never understand truth as they ought. For light brings truth, and if a person refuses to be taught light, neither can they receive the truth. A person needs to see and understand for themselves the error they are in, this then makes them more receptive to everything. …

We are the existence as human. But the tree can not be existing, as they do not have eyes, nose, and mouth. So they are too poor and no existence. As man and the woman, we are same existence as same thinking and equal truth to be one way, forever.(Boring existence)

There is God, but disobey to Idol as the creation to glorify Him. God means the truth is not the truth to say it is there. If it is there, it is the Black hole to block. So no start and no ending. And Jesus to be the perfect truth without the accident as the gap. It will be proved after eschatology.

If god is eternal, how did he traverse all the infinite time before the point, at which he thought of creating the universe?

Human intellect strives to answer questions. Most of humanities greatest steps forward have started by first understanding why. Why apples fall, lighting strikes, or why to sun goes away at night. Why has been a cornerstone in critical thinking. Yet I seldom see it applied to God. Religious people agrue that science can't disprove God or that the beauty or the universe requires a creator but no one ever attempts to explain why there is or would be a god in the first place. To say God loves, has faith, or is infinite is not an explanation for WHY. Assuming there is a god..... WHY?

God is considered by many people as a supreme soul that is full of pure bliss. My question is............ Isn't it immoral (or evil) for a blissful entity to create duality? In other words, when a blissful entity knows that the beings I am going to create will miss this blissful state, creation of a universe itself seems to be a blunder at the least.

I have been talking to an old friend of mine who is working on her PHD, , I would say she is a rather intelligent person, reasonably down to earth with no obvious crazy showing through. This particular conversation started with the Ken Ham Bill Nye debate, she watched it live and i was surprised she had an interest in the debate. She was sure Ken Ham won the debate and I of course was sure Bill Nye gave the best account of the night. I asked her why she thought Bill had lost and he answer took me by surprise, she is a creationist and is sure anyone who accepts evolution is being fooled. She said evolution is a lie and made up by scientists I pointed out tha…

My study of architectural styles related to major faiths : ancient greek, christian and islamic led me to the following conclusions : - ancient greek art was characterized by the ionic, doric and corinthian styles - christian was characterized by the gothic style for example - islamic art is characterized by the creation of a repository of objects like the mosque, tomb, palace etc., each with it's own purported significance What i found striking was the universal adaptation by any one class of subjects by the styles ascribed to them. Why didn't christendom change their art form from spires to ornate domes (predominantly islamic). Is there a subtle …

God created the realm and the rules. We are the players. The game is choice. Science does not disprove God. It investigates truth and reveals the methods of creation. Those who seek knowledge, seek God. Infinite potential has existed since the beginning.

This is my first post on the forum, I have done a quick search regarding this and can't find a previous post on the forum so I apologise if its a repost. My point I would wish to discuss here is that religion is the adult form of a of a blanket or a mobile above a child's head. It's a transparent way to comfort people who are scared of the unknown or the unbearable. If a child was in bed before he knew they never existed they always believed there were monsters in their closet or under their bed, they are told that say, a blanket, will keep them away and of course they believe it and it keeps them safe when really it doesn't in actual fact the problem just wasn't …

According to me at a broader level religion is a sociological exercise where people with some common ground meet and feel the need to reflect. Can an edifice, however imposing, adequately represent a complex ideology like a faith? Can it encapsulate human emotions and provide a channel for connecting with the Unknown? Can't we worship in the open, like some of our pristine ancestors? Apart from providing a common space for assembly, is there any deeper import of this place of congregation? Please opine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcOxhH8N3Bo The Way, the Truth, and the Life 5Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? 6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 7If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. 8Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? 10Believest thou not that I am in…

since early ages ,people began to develop pure ideas about things like , life, death, gods starting from the famous Greek philosophers, who developed their philosophical ideas through ages. when physics get involved in life, beginning with Aristotle ideas, he used the same shape to develop his (theories), without any kind of mathematics, but he failed . and that is for two reasons: first, pure ideas are very difficult to develop. second , he did not do a lot of experiments, he thought in science as pure knowledge . modern physics , combines mathematics, engineering, philosophy, and a little bit of religion! for , mathematics it is clear , when Sir Isaac Newton , in…

Have you investigated Gnostic Christianity? The Gnostic wing of Christianity, if it can even be called that today, has quite a few differences to Christianity and Catholicism. If the old Gnostic Christians were here, they would hardly recognize what has happened to the original Orthodox Catholic Church or it's various offshoots in Protestantism or Islam. The Gnostic Christian Jesus would have a fit and would be quite disappointed I think. I know that this Gnostic Christian is. The two main differences that moved the old Christians to kill Gnostic Christians and burn their scriptures was literalism in reading scriptures and the fact that the Gnostic version …
