Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

Greetings, All my life I have been interested in the ontological basis of being and theodicy. I have created a ppt entitled "How the Universe Works" that uses Dr. Radins recent double-slit experiment with meditators to support the position that the universe is idealism, please view the video link in the ppt. I use idealism to explain theodicy - the ruthless, amoral, violent universe we live in. In addition, I propose a modernized Neoplatonic Cosmological Proof, not for "God," but for "dynamis" the quantum field of infinite potential as the non-personal basis of being. I would also like some feedback on my use of Whitehead, Berlin, etc., it has been a long time since I…

Hi, a Muslim brought this verse Here's it: { فَلا أُقْسِمُ بالخُنَّسِ الجَوَارِ الكُنَّسِ } Since i can speak Arabic, I know that بالخُنَّسِ means invisible, and الجَوَارِ الكُنَّسِ means that runs and sweep And black holes are invisible, and they move through space, So we can say that they run through space, and they sweep and the Quran is describing them???? Please debunk this.. Also this isn't talking about planets, translations maybe different, but I know and Arabic, and this verse can never refer to planets, I mean i looked the meaning of this words in arabic, and they were the same i though.. Is there any way to debunk this…

As a deist, I tend to hold a sceptical view on some so-called supernatural activities. I believe that God or any other spiritual diety don't need to intervene with the world. And that most 'spiritual experiences' can be explained away. However, I have a problem with refuting demons, or more specifically, demonic possessions. --- Firstly, because I witnessed it firsthand. I have seen seemingly normal people suddenly go manic and hysterical. Their voices will change, possess great strength and hallucinate. Sometimes speak out words of prophesy (but I just think that's just hot reading) It will last for few days or weeks and it's usually followed by an ex…

This is more philosophy than anything yet I knew no one would respect it more than the religious forums. I have read up on a philosophy once which stated that since the eternal pain and suffering in hell is infinitely unbearable, then the maliciousness of hell itself out-weighs the odds of God not existing. Therefore it is only rational to practice religion, simply for the sake of not suffering eternally. While I do understand the reasoning behind this, how far could this philosophy go before becoming completely Irrational? For example: if you found a roll of hundred dollar bills on the floor, yet someone passing by tells you "if you pick up that money, you will suff…

I've been reading this article on casino advertising deleted and started thinking about the view different religions have on gambling. I know that Christianity and Judaism have approved of it in the past but I think now they're against it? I'm not so sure. What about Islam? Buddhism? And other religions? Is gambling ethical?

The first men were not domesticated. Overtime man gradually domesticated himself. I don't know how long this took but by the time of Adam man was fully domesticated and civilization took off. In the next phase of mans evolution man gradually became adapted to living in Civilization. Man passed through 6 phases. Gold, silver, copper, bronze, iron, diamond Infinite, finite (strong), finite (moderate), finite (weak), infinitesimal, zero The men of the diamond age had zero egos and were therefore beings of perfect logic (logos) Daniel 2: You, O king, were watching as a great statueone of impressive size and extraordinary brightnesswas standing before y…

Some people believe God is energy. It created the universe and it lives within us. Do you believe in this? If so..... the energy definition linked to God must be number 2: noun 1. the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity. "changes in the levels of vitamins can affect energy and well-being" synonyms: vitality, vigor, life, liveliness, animation, vivacity, spirit, spiritedness, verve, enthusiasm, zest, vibrancy, spark, sparkle, effervescence, ebullience, exuberance, buoyancy, sprightliness; More 2. power derived from the utilization of physical or chemical resources, especially to provide light and heat or…

Okay so basically if we presume "God" created all the energy within the universe aswell as defining the laws of the universe. If "God" was then to be a spectator of this universe, it could be said that it would only be watching a simulation, a simulation that it could run over and over again with the same results. Given that were yet unable to explain the genesis of life, or exactly how life started (1). It could be argued that life wouldn't ever exist within these simulations, in the same way that if we were to run computer simulations of the universe, we wouldnt expect life to form in the simulation. Therefore i suggest that "God" decided upon the epoch of the universe …

Jesus (Samson) was arrested on 1-14 (Passover) but was executed on 3-15. 3-15 is the New wine festival. The παρα-σκευή of the passover. The day of παρα-shekar (hyper-drunkeness). When large crowds get drunk people die. Pilate, therefore, entered into the praetorium again, and called Jesus, and said to him, `You are the King of the Jews?' Jesus answered, `Not an earthly king. I am a different sort of king' Pilate, therefore, said to him, `So you are a king then' Pilate, therefore, having heard this word, brought Jesus without -- and he sat down upon the tribunal -- to a place called, `Pavement,' and in Hebrew, Gabbatha; and it was the day of παρα-shekar (hyper-…

I am a daft, stupid, ignorant fool that believes the universe was created in a mysterious and magical explosion some unknown time in the past simply because Einstein, who didn't believe such nonsense, told me it was 'beautiful'. Using the same magic and mystery the universe accidentally created life just so dog could eat dog. There is no meaning to life, we are going to die and that is it. And of course religion is responsible all the wars despite the fact it is the Godless heathens with all the weapons, all the money and even the power to make laws by which it is decided who gets rewarded and who gets punished and what those rewards and punishments should be (i.e. th…

Hi, I have looked at intelligent design and I am bit puzzled. I mean, I hear scientists say it is 'religion cloaked in scientific language' and shouldn't be taught in our schools but after looking at it I really don't see any religion in it whatsoever? Consequently, could a someone who is against intelligent design being taught in our schools clearly explain intelligent design and why it is 'religion cloaked in scientific language' to me please? I would like to see what I must be getting wrong, thanks!

I notice a lot of atheists are always insisting we religious people study your wacky science. Another thing I have noticed is that because atheists have never studied religion, they are basically ignorant of its science. Discuss.

In Theory theism is just about being a good person. And in theory atheism is just about empiricism. But between the theory and the actual practice there is a rather sizable Gap. I can no longer turn a blind eye to this Gap. That is why I can no longer consider myself a theist. Nor can I consider myself an atheist either for exactly the same reason. Balaam and the Nicolaitans (false apostles) pretended to be supporting the church but in reality were just there to subvert it. Today we call these people fundamentalists. Fundamentalism: a movement characterized by a strictly literal (empirical) interpretation of religious texts By that definition many atheists are …

The creation account agrees with science: Nanobes > Single celled organisms > multicellular organisms > land animals including Humans In Genesis 1 Adam is created at the beginning of the 6th day. (columns 4 and 5) In Genesis 2 Adam is created at the beginning of the 3rd day. (columns 6 and 7) The two accounts do not conflict. They are just different ways of looking at the same events http://religion.wikia.com/wiki/At-a-glance/The_Bible/101

Mark 13:25 King James Bible And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. Question... How Can The Stars Fall From The Sky? 2000 years ago they didnt know what the stars were.. They looked up and saw specs of light in the night sky.. Didnt know they were huge balls of fire billions and trillions of miles away. The Scripture is Literal, It means those specs of light, Not comets or metors, but the specs of light they called stars.. If one single scripture has been disproved it undermines the whole bible and the belief system. How can God be wrong?

i have gone to many forums and blogs and their is always one question whether or not there a significant being that mingles amongst men? This question i believe is to be true for many reasons, however, since the beginning of WW1 and many wars proceeding i believe have all been about either damning those who have believed to be miss using this entity either for knowledge, sex, or power. However as stupid as these people can get for believing for some reason that they are able to enslave this entity belong in a asylum or hung to death. For all we know there are these 1% that pay millions of dollars to partake in some make belief occult's or scientific groups that actually b…
