One of my computers have been infected with a virus or worm that got past Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, and ZoneAlarm Pro. In fact, the virus has disabled my ZoneAlarm Pro firewall, and I'm trying to figure out how to fix it. The virus automatically downloaded itself into my computer from a web site. It only took a few seconds to download, so I didn't have time to press the Cancel button. While it was downloading, I saw the following window: Then a file named 0.exe was on my hard drive. Before ZoneAlarm Pro was disabled, it warned me that 0.exe was trying to act like a server. It also warned me that 0.exe was attempting to send e-mail messages. …

As opposed to my "trivial java questions" thread, I will post all my in the near future Java questions which I think concern more to my understanding of Java programming language and computer science rather than just facts. So, I think it's better to seperate them. This is the head start question: 1) public class Foo{ public int a; public Foo(){a = 3;} public void add(){a+=5;} } public class Bar extends Foo{ public int a; public Bar(){a = 8;} public vid add(){a+=5;} } why does this code: Foo foo = new Bar(); foo.add(); System.out.print(foo.a); show the result 3 instead of the expected 13? thanks

My computer had recently turned to a slow pile of crap, so i decided to reformat. I have a fresh copy of Windows xp pro installed on a blank harddrive, ive installed video, motherboard, and wireless card drivers. ive installed mozilla fire fox. and thats it. there is nothing else installed as far as this os is concerned. it runs perfectly fine until i try to do something online. i can go on the windows update site with no problems, but as soon as i try to browse anything, like SFN or hotmail or google, its a matter of seconds before my computer restarts with no warning or error message. it happens with IE and with firefox, it happens with my wireless card and with…

The more languages you've used, particularly from different areas, the better programmer you'll be! The Pragmatic Programmers recommend learning a new language every year. I'm presently learning a language called Scala. What languages have you used?

I bought a cheap low end HP notebook, second one in 2 years. I'm not liking having to customize and format another computer but looks like I'm going to need to go through and delete a lot of operating code and unwanted Windows 10 garbage. It would be nice if I could delete Cortana but they seemed to have got that one covered. Windows 10 sucks ass and makes it feel like you don't even own your computer. I might get a retro Windows 7 or Windows 8 and wipe and reboot with that to avoid this pesky "everything must be accessible to Microsoft" trash. I hate you Microsoft. This is gonna take forever.

Hi guys! New chances are opening up in the city I live, but few conditions are limiting me of getting them. And one of them is programming:doh: . I'm thinking (and I really need to) of learning to program, so I was wondering which software would be the best to start with, and if anyone of you could recommend any books to read about that, that'd be great. Any help would be mostly appreciated! Thanks!!!

I read in Newsweek a few months back that it tested a 10Ghz processor chip and it was successful. To me, I don't think AMD will be able to compete with Intel for much longer. What does everyone think?

This used to happen in the past only when viewing the ‘details’ of certain video files. I used to get "Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close..." but later all the explorer functions would just restart with out the friendly little error message. I guess I shouldnt have let this error go unoticed for so long but I’ve just been assuming that it had something to do with not having the ‘proper encodings’ to view the file.[sense I never use media player – VLC and BSPlayer] (I realize that the 'quick view' in the corner is obtained from the file itself as a template so my comp. is not just 'viewing the first frame') Now, explorer cashes and restarts…

Has anyone tried the new Internet Explorer 7 BETA: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx It seems to work well, but I'm not sure how to test it to see if the security has improved or if it complies better with the standards. I do see that in the version that comes with Windows Vista BETA 2, you can disable ActiveX and other plug-ins. What do you all think about the new version?

Dave Thomas of the Pragmatic Programmers recommends learning one language a year (although probably doesn't himself) What's the next one you're interested in learning? While I'd really like to learn Lisp or Scheme, I think the next one I'd really like to learn is O'Caml. At one point I tried to learn plain vanilla ML, the language that O'Caml's ancestor CAML is based on. O'Caml was created by functional programming wizard Xavier Leroy, and combines modern declarative FP approaches like pattern matching with an extremely fast runtime. O'Caml has seen extensive use on Wall Street for stock market analytics, and was also used extensively by VMware for virtual serv…

Computers have rapidly become part of our everyday lives. In less than half a century, countless human operations have been replaced with computers who can do it faster and more efficiently, and don't ask for wages. So when does a computer become alive? If you think about it, computers do most things humans do. They can understand language, they can read, they can see, they can communicate, they can beat you in chess and plan your trip. They can regulate their resources as to run most efficiently, they require energy from an outside source. They can tell you when something is wrong with them, and sometimes even tell you what is wrong. So when is it living? S…

Which one will you choose? Have you picked a side yet? Maybe you have players for both? There is some discussion at the moment about the various advantages of each format... slightly better quality on Blu-Ray, conventional DVD format on the flipside of some HD DVD movies, and so on. Let's hear your views

I have often heard that your computer is only as fast as your slowest part what would I need to overclock this processor to, to balance this video card. It has a water-cooler 280mm water-cooler so I don't think temperature will be a issue, but I want them to balance. Processor Video Card Because currently I clock this processor to 4.0 ghz. Current Processor to balance. Current Video Card Which I know is off by 1% , that is due to overheating above that with a standard fan cooler which sits at Min 44 C to Max 87 C which is say below 100 C to 150 C where it melts but I always go below 99 C to be safe which I have been told be be OC'd t…

Alright, so here is something useful. After playing with n-gram for text analysis I came up with an idea for AI. How does n-gram works? For instance, I can type: "I drink a Coca Cola in my room today." You run an n-gram for 2. "I drink" no meaning. "drink a" no meaning. "a Coca" no meaning. "Coca Cola" has meaning. And it goes up with all possible combinations in ascending order "I Coca", "I Cola", "I in" etc. Collecting all web pages and texts you'll probably sum up the frequency for Coca Cola to be 100. Meaning Coca cola has a meaning and all words associated with it. And therefore when you type I drink a Coca Cola, you would get a list in the databa…
