Basically, it's a little LED light stuck inside a bead, and the "chain" of necklace is the wire connecting it to a battery in the clasp. http://www.firejewelusa.com/cube.htm What I'm wondering is if anybody here has tried making their own, and where's the best place to buy the parts?

Well, I am going to be buying lab equipment and such from United Nuclear soon. I will be buying the full glassware set, as well as the hardware set. I chose United Nuclear because they have very good prices. Anyways, I wanted a sort of Chemistry set, but I didn't want a childish one, with low quality equipment geared towards children, as well as the experiments are geared towards children, while also being ridiculously expensive. So I am just going to buy the glass and hardware from UN. But the thing is, they don't come with Chemicals like the kits do. Are there any packages of Chemicals that I could buy alone, without hardware? Or will I have to buy…

In Chemistry today we did a practical to determine the amount of Iron(II) in dried thyme. Partway through the experiment method, it instructed us to put some of a solution of Sulphuric acid (1moldm^-3) and thyme into a plastic beaker. It struck me as odd that the method specified the material, as it's not something I've come across in the two years of the course. I wondered whether there was any basis for material specification in this case, or whether glass versus plastic is arbitrary. Are there any circumstances in which plastic only should be used versus glass, or vice versa?

I want to modify a webcam pro 9000 for microscopy using a Amscope compound mic. I've read a few articles online about it, but it looks a little outside of my technical know how - soldering, splicing wires, etc. Does anyone know of a good way to get really good video from a webcam through a microscope without spending too much?

You can make a lab in your home by taking shot glasses or very small glases that nobody drinks out of for containers. To get all the ingredients, well, experiment with the spices, oils and left over foods that lie around. They all react, imagine the medicines you could make with spices? Spices make the best medicine because they burn things like cells. If you were to experiment with a blood sample and take some tupperware containers - not as good but good enough - you could treat the infected blood, that nobody has anything better to do with, and add things to it. If you were to go to class and experiment there, you would be able to see if things work or not, and …

Perhaps not the right forum, but.. I want to make a glass-tubing helix, which will fit inside another glass cylinder. The intent is to use it for cooling some exhaust fumes and gas, but also to learn how to do it. The only idea I have in my head so far is to put a wooden dowel of the correct inside diameter in my lathe, and spin it very slowly as I heat the tubing to malleability and wind it onto the rotating dowel. I'm thinking wood because I've seen it used by glassblowers, and I don't want to use something like steel that's so heat-conductive that the glass will cool too quickly before it's finished being bent. Any thoughts? Thanks! Merged post fol…

Hey all, I'm trying to attach a Bunsen burner to an LP gas cylinder but I have problems finding the right adaptor and tubing for the cylinder. I have a piece of vinyl tubing of ~1.5mm wall width and I'm wondering if anyone knows how to calculate the maximum internal pressure that this tubing can withstand. I know the LPG cylinder is ~3.3MPa when full and it just looks to me like this tubing would not hold it so I don't want to try it just yet, would like some numbers. Any ideas?

I have a heat reclaim system that we can no longer get the controls for. I am looking for someone who could take the old ones and rebuild them. They were originally made by Computer Process Controls Inc. Any one interested in tackling this project? We would want several of them rebuilt right now.

I'm trying to find a cheap microscope for hobbyist purposes, with emphasis on 'cheap' (not bad quality, just good bang for my buck). I'm just interested in optical microscopes, probably binocular, and with magnification at least as good as the basic ones that I've used in college and university (10x eyepiece, with 4x, 10x, 40x, 100x objectives). Can anyone help me out? I've been blindly searching around the internet, and sometimes microscopes that look almost the same to me differ in $100 for no apparent reason. Where should I look? Do you know of any decent online shops?

Suppose I want to run a normal low-voltage transformer in reverse -- i.e., running the line voltage through the secondary winding of a filament transformer. The load will generally be negligible, but maybe not. How can I determine whether the transformer can handle this? From the gauge and secondary rating I can make a guess how much current the winding is intended to handle, but I don't know if Ohm's law applies here. Example: For a 120VAC transformer with a secondary winding rated at 28VAC/2.8A, is the winding's impedance 10[math]\Omega[/math]? Thanks!

I have some 'safety glasses' that I picked up a while ago. The lenses are supposedly polycarbonate. Each lens has the notation "PV Z87+" etched on it, as does the frame, and I'm guessing it has something to do with the limitations of the poly. However, I haven't been able to find any explanatory reference for such notation. On the other hand, it might just be the manufacturer's part number. ("Made in China") Does anyone have a clew what "PV Z87+" might mean on safety glasses? Thanks!

I need some forceps or tongs that I can use to extract items from caustic solutions. E.g., pulling a circuit board from a etching solution, or something from an HCl bath. They need to be pretty long, easily manipulated (i.e., closed and held closed) far from the tip, heat-tolerant, and reasonably non-reactive. Any suggestions of what I can use and where I can get one? Thanks!

Glass stirring rods may not be anywhere near the most expensive equipment the average amateur chemist owns, but they are nonetheless ubiquitous. I also think it's nice to have at least one piece of equipment that you made in some way. Current ebay prices put the typical 6mm wide, 12 inch (305mm) long stirring rod between $0.75 and $1 (USD) each before shipping. Instead of spending my money on a dozen or so stirring rods, I purchased a large quantity of 6mm diameter clear borosilicate rod for glass working. I won 5lbs of rods for only $5 (which comes to 51 pieces that are 24 inches (610mm) long) and picked them up since the seller was fairly local. Stirring rods that I…

I wan't to make some planar magnetic headphones. How these work is that there are two magnet arrays and between them a planar diaphragm with a voice coil etched onto it. For the diaphragm I need aluminized mylar, around 25 micrometres thick. I can't find anywhere to get this in reasonable amounts that will sell to individuals and not just companies. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance SCB

I need a material that thin as paper, at least as light as paper and dosn't deform to much when handled unlike paper. It also needs to be able to be a circle or be able to be cut into a circle. Starched paper is no good as starch spray makes the paper too sogy.

I think this would be the right place for this... Anyhoo, long time no see Science Forum I have a quick and simple question. When I was a kid, I had this laser gun keychain that took small button cells as its power source. In fact, it had 3 of them stacked on one another. I was wondering if say, each was 1v, does stacking them increase the output to 3v? Or does it just increase the lifespan of the powered object? Thanks

So, I'm working with a student space organization on their national level doing some educational outreach work. The organization is the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) and our website is http://www.seds.org. An old boss of mine had told me that a lot of research labs had to do sterile experiments, which meant that they often threw away the lab beakers after one use to ensure that there would be absolutely no contamination. I do not work with lab equipment on a regular basis or do any kind of research that would require it. The closest I come is playing with rocket fuels a few times a year. So, I don't know much about the validity of her …
