    How did LIGO determine the mass of distant black hole mergers? LIGO found the direction to the merger from the time difference of the two detectors and from the polarization of the gravitational waves. Was the gravitational wave that was detected a combination of more then one gravitational wave?

I'm ending up posting it in Physics as I'm about to lay out my, for lack of a better word - disgust with the directions that modern philosophy and neuroscience take in relation to Physics.     So uh, let's say I take a jet pack and I fly slowly into space in a space suit in auto pilot mode close to 5m/h upward(This is just the upward speed, it has nothing to do with the orbital speed). What is my orbital velocity when I reach space? My speed at that height relative to the earth's orbit speed? Actually the helium balloon idea is good, I can just jet pack to space after I reach that distance

  8. This isn't meant to endorse such a project, just speculate on whether or not it's possible. Suppose Earth disposed of all its nuclear weapons by firing them at Mars or at craters on the moon. The thermal radiation would presumably be at least partly absorbed. Would there be a layer of molten rock that would then solidify in a semi-spherical shape perpendicular to these planets' gravity, sort of like the almost-flat manner in which ponds freeze over, or would it just sublimate directly into gas?   9. We know that light is an electromagnetic wave and it does interact with charges. It contains magnetic field and electric field oscillating perpendicularly but when we apply an electric or magnetic field in any direction to the wave the applied electric field or magnetic field vector doesn't alter the magnetic or electric field in the electro magnetic wave (according to vector addition rule)....why? On a related note, would it be significantly more expensive, less efficient, or both, to use one giant concave mirror than several flat ones? Or is there a risk a giant concave mirror would break?

    I was just wondering, what exactly is movement? Like if we are all part of space, then what exactly is our movement within space? We can't move relative to space obviously, but what exactly is happening to space as we move? Wow this is hard to explain. Say a man was to fall out of an airplane from high alt (say 7km) (assuming no parachute!), what shape should he mold himself into to maximize his chances of survival on impact and how should he attempt to adjust his position once entered into the water. Why is it that when integrating over all angles, integration is over the solid angle omega composed of theta and phi but the vector angle within flux, phi( r, E , omega), is resolved into the cartesian coordinates by cos(theta)sin(phi), sin(theta)sin(phi) and cos(phi) which is essentially the dot product of the radius vector from spherical coordinates with the cartesian coordinate vectors i.e. why is integration over theta and phi to remove angular dependence but when resolving the angle the dot product is as if using the radius vector?

    Ok, I have a thought experiment; a visual model. I used to run daily. I would run down the trail at an 8-minute mile. Somehow a fly that has a maximum speed of 5 mph lands on my neck. I swat the fly and it leaves my neck. Accordingly, I increase my speed to a 6-minute mile. The same fly somehow lands on me again. Every time it leaves my body from my swat in comes right back.
